EVERY Town on the Oregon Coast -The Drive Down Highway 101

Did I miss anything on this road trip down Oregon's coastline? I don't think so! It took two weeks to stop at every town (and other features - like the famed lighthouses and viewpoints). The Oregon Coast is almost entirely accessible by vehicle. It is 362 miles long from north to south. It also has a couple other names and designations: Highway 101, The People's Coast and The Pacific Coast Scenic Byway. It's also an All American Road, which is a Federal Highway Administration designation. The criteria for an All American Road is that it must feature two or more intrinsic qualities that are nationally significant and do not exist elsewhere. The road must also be a destination unto itself, which means the actual drive is the primary reason for the trip.

You drove from Glasgow to Oregon? That's impressive. 😀 My Scottish ancestors took a boat, in 1849, ended up in Kincardine, Ontario. Their surnames were pretty famous, but I don't want to disclose them here. I can say that she was born in the castle of the Duke of Argyle because her father was the Gameskeeper, her mother was a domestic, a storm was coming in so the Duke insisted they stay and Isabella was born there. One of their 7 sons, my Great-Great Grandfather and G-G-Grandmother, from Nova Scotia, moved to Minnesota. My Clan Chief is coming across the pond this summer for a festival. Guess I have to order a kilt.

Good job on the video! You even covered a thing or two in my area that most travelers never know about. One thing though...Yaquina ( your Newport segment) is actually pronounced yuh-KWIN-uh. If you hear anybody in the area calling it yuh-KEEN-uh, that is a clear sign that either the person is just traveling through or they moved here a short time ago and haven't learned the proper pronunciations.

I've driven the entire Oregon coast many times and love it. One point, though--you don't curve around after getting off the bridge at Astoria to get onto US-101. If you're crossing on the bridge, you're already on US-101.

Excellent point! I should have said getting into the Oregon side of 101. I love that bridge! Washington’s side of 101 doesn’t hug the coast nearly as much. I’ve got a little of it in my Olympic National Park video.

Awesome place to visit! Especially in the summer when it's sunny and 65 degrees the whole time. The water is too cold to swim though, except for the kids lol and some wetsuit wearing surfers/windsurfers. Some of the best camping in my life is in the woods of Oregon on the coast. HIGHLY RECOMMEND AGAINST MOVING THERE THOUGH. I visited there for a week and then moved there a year later. Don't try to move to your vacation spots. These towns are all so small and underdeveloped honestly. You might say, "well I'm into that, I don't want development or people." Just move to Alaska and homestead bro. I lived in Coos Bay for 2 years and ended up absolutely hating it. The natural beauty aside. Lacking in housing, jobs, activities besides outdoors stuff, and just a generally ran down area of the country. It was like forgotten when the mills closed in the 70s/80s. It was some of the best fishing I've had in my life. I will say that. Sorry to shit in your comments I just always wanna warn people. Unless you are just super lefty and want to be in Oregon for politics. Be warned though, the coast is super hardcore Righty/Trumpie.

And of course you had to pick the "armpit of the Oregon coast" to move to, without doing your "due diligence" about the town first. We inland Oregonians kinda skip the Coos Bay/North Bend area when we go to the coast ....not even close to being on par with the majority of the coastal towns.....sorry dude, should've done some research before committing to moving there. Only upside of the are a is the "somewhat reasonable" housing pricing....for good reason...not a desirable place.

Such a beautiful shot of y'all driving into Hebo. Just to the right of the 101 Junction with Hyw 22 is a red, two story building. That was the Hebo Elementary School. I attended there 1st through 3rd grade starting in 1959. We lived in Air Force housing a mile or two below the summit of Mt. Hebo. The Air Force had an early warning radar site on top of the mountain. It was a boy's paradise living on the mountain for 3 years. BTW, the building on the right hand side of 101 is the Hebo Inn. A fantastic place for many, many years with some of the best clam chowder on the coast. People have tried to restore the Inn, but so far it hasn't worked out for anyone.

He had a funds page set up and many of us contributed to his dream. I even met him one time at the Inn in 2010 or so. He said that he was getting so much grief from the inspectors that he really couldn't go any further. He also said the whole area was a haven for druggies. Sadly Dave passed away. One other thing this reminds me of is stepping off the plane in Portland and the smells of the PNW come rushing in and all the memories of Oregon come flooding back. My wife and I worked in Coos Bay and lived in North Bend for 35 years between our Coast Guard years and then working in the community. I actually DID invest a couple hours trying to get accurate pronunciations. Kind of a "fluff piece" imho as a 40+yr resident of Oregon. You could certainly use some coaching as to how to pronounce some names (had me chuckling at many) of places and features. Can't imagine why you took 2 weeks to "do the coast, top to bottom", as you only briefly touched on many towns and areas...and left out a few that we consider unique to us. Not much mention of the seafood available either....including the world-famous clam chowder !.....or how to buy some to cook at your campsite. Overall...you did the coast "okay", but I guess that I understand your need for brevity in a video such as this, but do come back sometime, and this time talk to some RESIDENTS, not just checking out the highlights of the Chamber of Commerce brochures, please. PS...absolutely LOVED the WIND SOUNDS on your shots with sound. The wind is a constant factor in whether the beaches of Oregon are "fun"....or make you wish that you had brought along those old lawn chairs that you need to have SANDBLASTED before repainting....hehehe.

Thanks for the feedback! The strategies with all my travel videos are similar - keep them fairly fast paced and to provide some helpful value for the viewer (maps, etc). They are all a little different - as you can imagine biking through Zion National Park, canvassing Glacier National Park or driving the Oregon Coast are all totally different experiences. With Oregon I wanted to hit every place and provide snippets of inspiring videos with a fact or tidbit. As you know, the coast requires much more time to do it justice. I'm glad some locals jumped into the comments to correct a couple pronunciations! I'll bring the lawn chairs next time. ✌

Great video, thank you! I am hoping to get up there sometime this Summer to do a similar coastal road trip so this was very helpful! I just wished you included Florence too.

You’ll have a blast! The Florence omission was a major mistake on my part. Im planning a video just for that area. Stay tuned.

Since a sectioned of Highway 1 near Big Sur, CA collapsed in storm recently (March 2024), this looks like a great alternative. May try this drive in late summer.

I saw that! They usually repair those fairly quickly but if not, head north.

Lived in Oregon, 1968-72. Go back to the Oregon coast every other year. My second most favorite drive in the US. My favorite is I-70 from Denver to Glenwood Springs.
