Sterling was the man. Every time Favre was in trouble early in his career he just hocked it in Sterling's general area. When Free Agency opened up in the early/mid 90's Green Bay went out and bought a Super Bowl team (Just like the 1994 49ers did). Reggie White, Andre Rison, Sean Jones, Desmond Howard...All those guys were major players in their Super Bowl run in 1996. Without that "talent stack" I don't think Brett Favre would have ever had that ring. I was really sad Sterling didn't get a ring since he had to retire early but then his Bro Shannon gave him his Broncos ring after they beat GB in '97. Now that's classy!

@@TheBrett04 Agreed. He was more talented than his brother, which is something Shannon acknowledges to this day. Football is such a physical sport that it seems unreasonable for players to play for 15 years just for a chance at the HoF.

I never realized how many developers the NFL used to license their rights to. It's sad to think about it as now only EA is allowed to make NFL games which means no NFL 2K or Blitz.

I LOVED Tecmo Super Bowl III but don't follow sports at all. To me, that's the mark of a great sports game. A store shipped it to us by complete accident and my parents just gave it to me. Score!

There's also the rare "Tecmo Super Bowl II: Special Edition" in which you can play a three year, 1992-1994 NFL schedule with corresponding rosters for that particular season (I think that's impressive). The knocks I have on the game are that there's no first down marker of any kind, the CPU goes for two much too often, when you intercept the ball you aren't informed of the player who picked off the pass, and the stats screen during games doesn't acknowledge enough players for all the space it has. Otherwise, it's a lot like the third game, which I do agree is the best football game on the SNES.

Tecmo 3 was weird with rookies because some of them were in the game but not named (for example: Joey Galloway is with the Seahawks but listed as WR Seahawks). But other rookies like Steve McNair weren't in the game.

Come on now, what self respecting football fan who grew up in the 90s doesnt remember Sterling Sharpe? That dude was a beast until he injured his neck. His bro Shannon is gonna come after ya! :-D Also, maybe I'm weird but I played the ever living hell out of Super Play Action. Once you get used to the way the field is presented it's not too hard to get the passing game down and it has a fairly decent run game for the era.

Bryan A.Cal There's a Shannon Sharpe and there's Sterling Sharpe also. Same last name, No relation. Shannon played Tight End. Sterling was a wide receiver.

I love your videos SNES Drunk but most kids/teens who really liked and watched football like I did remember Sterling Sharpe. He was an underrated receiver but still a good one. With the way they throw the ball in today's game his numbers may look like he sucked but in that day and the way the game was played then he was a really good talent. Didn't help that you had Rice, Carter, Rison, Irvin, Moss and other really great WR's in or entering the league as teams were finally starting to open the field passing with HOF QB's. Aikman, Montana, Young, Cunningham, Simms, Esaison, Kelly, Elway, Favre... the league was ripe with so much talent at the QB position in the early 90's.

Im subscribed just becoz you had the grace to put the ad at the end. I fuggin respect that. Thats proper hustle kids, thats how you do it with honor and consideration, for us. (Nonsarcasm)

The tecmo games are definitely the most fun to play. I have nostalgic memories of ABC Monday Night Football because my parents bought it for me one year, but it's true the game play is slow and painful. But it does have power plays which are kind of cool. Nice roundup here!

Holy Crap! I didn't know the "Madden Ambulance" was a thing until I saw it here today! That's hilarious! They need to implement that in modern Football games!

I liked Super Play Action Football. The playbook was kind of a learning curve, but the leaping interceptions and stiff arms were satisfying. Also the college version let you customize your schedule which was nice.

That's also how you (or I, at least) had to catch passes. Switch to the intended receiver, move a couple yards before the catch-marker, and jump up for it.

Oh good, someone else talking about this game! Here's my copied and pasted comment from the main thread! (I hate this game now, but i loved it then!) OLD vid, new comment: I had Super play action football growing up. It was the only football game i owned, and i was a huge football fan, so I got to know that game inside and out. Here's a "fun" fact: The computer couldn't make any decisions. They could only follow a script. If they were on offense, the play would always happen the same way every time, throw to the same receiver, run to the same gap, every single time. And to top it off, each offensive play looked slightly different on the map. After you play defense long enough, you can literally memorize the formations, and where the ball will go EVERY SINGLE TIME. Games that were 100-0 were easy to accomplish. (but extremely tedious.)

@@acvieluf I definitely knew what play the computer was running 90% of the time based on the formation. But I thought it was genuinely fun to play against another person (if they were familiar with the game). Also, the college mode. It was challenging winning the championship with certain teams, even if you were super familiar with the game. Even if you won every game.

Tecmo Super Bowl III is my favorite football game ever and in my top 10 of favorite games period! So many memories with friends!

Loved this game. I figured out how to align my defense to allow an open rusher on every play. Sacks were inevitable.

Tecmo Super Bowl III also has create-a-player that works like an RPG in how they improve over time which really adds a ton of value to it over the other two games in the series.

I found this channel about a month ago and noticed a bunch of hints this guy might be from Minnesota and this mostly confirms it. Trolling Packers fans with the Sterling Sharpe bit it hilarious.

I love Super Play Action Football. It's the only game ever with HS, College, and NFL in the same game, and you really feel the difference in each mode. This was the game that made me a football fan. It's an absolute masterpiece. Easily one of the best football games ever made.

I do not even know how to play American football but still found this interesting. Good video.

Total length of video: 718 secs. Total length of "SNES Drunk": .5 secs. .07% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".

I played a ton of Techmo Bowl on the OG GameBoy, SF was my team, there were two plays that seemed to always work. 1 pass play to Clark and 1 run for Rodger Creig always got major yards or scored. It was a fun game, Cincinnati even seemed a bit more difficult to beat when i would play against them and i swear some teams were better at "covering" certain plays but once you found the one that worked it was like that catch always happened or the run gap was always there as if to emulate the strengths and weaknesses of each team from the era the game is based on(mid-late 80's maybe early 90) It sounds like alot of programming and depth for a GameBoy game and it could have just been my young mind perceiving "depth" in the intricacies of Techmo Bowl😅 Great Video though 👍

Tecmo Super Bowl 3 is BY FAR the best. You can create players, simulate through seasons, pick up free agents, change your playbook (before the game), change/sub out players.

Great video like always, Drunk! When will the moment be that you cover SNES/SuFami soccer games? The 2018 World Cup is nearly at its end, and it would be pretty cool to see your opinion on Sensible Soccer, the Super Formation Soccer series and International Superstar Soccer... Or maybe you're not that much of a fan to do so. Because I'm not that big on it myself, but I love to watch it every now and then, same with the games as well (The 1st Super Formation Soccer game, localized as Super Soccer by Nintendo themselves and ISS Deluxe are my favorites, personally)

I had QB Club '96 (ranked #2 in this video) and I remember training my kicker over and over to build his stats so I could FG from 65 yards away! Loved that game.

Loved the Tecmo Bowl series, sooooo many great times with friends on that game.

"EA Sports" "Welcome to College Football" then the music kicks in & it gets you so pumped! Of course i had it on Genesis which really played great & i remember that genesis twangy guitar tone that really lent itself to the soundtrack. Never played EA NCAAFB '97 on SNES but the Sega version is one of my favorite video games of all time. I actually feel like(for as much praise as Madden gets) EA NCAA FB '97 took football video games forward a tremendous leap.

Suggestion for future videos of this nature. You should have a little annotation in one of the corners, simply reminding your viewers the name of the game you're currently talking about. I forgot so many times and had to skip back in the video to check again. Either that or time-stamps in the video description.

SUPER HIGH IMPACT was always one of my favorites. I couldn't remember the name of it and was the main reason I clicked on this video. Been driving me nuts for years lol When ever I'm watching football and there's 2 BACK TO BACK SACKS I always yell I EAT QUARTERBACKS FOR BREAKFAST to this day lol THANKS for filling in the void 😁 lol

I remember renting ABC Monday Night Football back in the day. I actually found out that with one of the post route plays, if you kept running backwards with your QB until your guy ran into the right side of the end zone and you threw it to him, he would get a touchdown every time. I was crushing the CPU 84-14 every game. Suffice to say, it was fun for one evening but once I returned the rental I never thought about it again.

These lists are great! Maybe basketball and futbol next?

Man, after having played a bunch of these SNES games, then Madden and NFL Quarterback club for 64, NFL Blitz was such a huge awesome departure.

I grew up with Madden 98 and loved the create a player function, it’s very well done.

There was a sports illustrated game that had both football and baseball. The football on that cart was my favourite football game on the SNES and the baseball was good enough.

super high impact is basically the snes version of nfl blitz. Same play call system

Awesome review. I was always interested In The tecmo games on the SNES but never had the chance to enter them back in the day and I never see them now. I loved the original ones on the nes so I'm extremely interested in the ones the snes. I had no idea there were 3. Time for some ebay and Amazon fun to find a good price on them. The football games seem to lag hard when using mode 7... They wish they could fly like an ff6 airship.

NCAA Football 5:27 okay that game is playable and has the Fighting Illini on it. You just need to throw to backs swinging out and get the hang of it. In fact the running game in that game is more the major fault than the passing/receiving game. Good video, unfortunately THE GOAT VIDEO FOOTBALL GAME EVER was never released on the SNES. It was the first Joe Montana for SEGA GENESIS and designed by EA Sports for SEGA. In fact they took their Madden programming and tried to dumb it down but did it for a favor to SEGA and accidentally made the best game of all time. What do mean nobody remembers Sterling Sharpe? His game was decent, you got that part right.

I adored Super High Impact, and I never liked football when I was growing up. That game made me appreciate it somewhat, and it definitely looks like one of the best games here. I remember the gameplay being surprisingly smooth, although that Tecmo football game looks great too. :)

I came here to see if you would remind me of an old Football game I used to have for SNES, it was Stearling Sharpe End 2 End. Fun fact, The Niners on that game have a play, not sure what the play actually is called or anything but if you hit L then R you will do a hand off play that the AI doesn't know how to defend against, you just run it in for a TD every single time.

My first football game was Madden 95 for SNES, had so much fun on that game.

I remember Super High Impact and how cheesy it was. Thank you for making Tecmo as number one, because I loved those games. The last one was easily the best SNES AM football game.

i never played EA NCAA Football '97 on SNES but it's surprising to hear how bad it was because EA NCAA FB '97 on the Genesis is one of my favorite video games of all time. Now that i think about it - it probably is my favorite video game of all time. Between it & Sonic 2, i'm not sure which i played more, but i can guarantee it's between those two games that i spent the most hours actually playing as a kid.

QB Club was my jam! I just wish you would have shown the dance the players do when you win, haha.

Troy Aikman football was released in 1994 and remained the second best Football game on the SNES until maybe Madden 97/98 came out. You bash on it, but it had a lot more going for it than you give it credit for. It had: • a deep play book • the ability to create plays of your own • the ability to customize teams by increasing and decreasing the salary of your players in a balanced way. • Unlike the other games, including Madden titles, running both inside and outside was balanced and fair and fun. • The passing game worked. No windowed passing or tipped at the line like Madden and there were real concepts • the weather effects were a lot of fun. Rain, snow, grass and turf. When picking the best SNES football games, I would probably recommend this order: Madden 98 Tecmo Super Bowl (any) Troy Aikman football Seriously, give it a try and remember that it came out 4 years before Madden 98 and was doing things better than Madden 93-96 ever did.

Yeah I still have a working super nintendo as I do have the first tecmo bowl. I agree the 3rd 1 was definitely the best as u can make trades, add players in free agency and create your own player. Anyways, you going through all the football games just bring me back to some of my childhood memories.

From a non-US region, well PAL basically, our last good NFL snes game was Madden '94. I must've put hundreds of hours in that game and the only other i had was Donkey Kong Country. We never watched it coz it was never really televised but loved Madden '94. I used to do a Friday night weekly season to coincide with the NFL season and play my Superbowl in that first week in February. I can still recall i went back-to-back - 49ers beat Bengals then beat the Giants the following year haha. Mate good times!

*I remember Sterling Sharpe. He played for the GAMECOCKS of SOUTH CAROLINA. I went to his football camp one summer in hopes of learning how to be a kicker. There was nothing for kickers and he went absolutely mad yelling at us. Years later, his house was on my route and I delivered really expensive steaks to his porch every week. NCAA Football is actually pretty decent. Not sure why you had trouble catching the ball, you just throw it in the direction of the player and they catch it, there's no secret. It's nice they went minimalist on the graphics because it meant the game ran smooth. The perspective also helps it run smooth because the SNES doesn't have to worry about scaling anything.

First I find SNES drunk and enjoy the videos and now I learn he is a Vikings fan! SKOL!

It's really weird. My brother and I must have played Tecmo Super Bowl I & III for hundreds of hours. I always wondered what the hell happened to Tecmo Super Bowl II. We never saw it anywhere. It must have had a very limited release because coincidentally it's also (by far) the most expensive of the three.

Yeah, it was a limited release in the US. I remember Nintendo Power reviewed it and said only 10,000 copies were being shipped to the US by Tecmo. Even going so far as to warning readers that it would be hard to track down in stores.

3rd Tecmo Bowl game was my absolute favorite SNES game period. It was my old stand-by. I would play other games, experience the bigger and newer titles but always had Tecmo Super Bowl: III to fall back on. I probably put in thousands of hours on that game being an American military kid who lived off base in Germany. At the time the stat tracking and continuous career/season modes were unique. They were also the first game to introduce a hurdle animation that worked and the spin actually looked like a real football maneuver. Plus they had a crap ton of CAP slots where you could mix and match actual rosters, keep up with real world free agency and transactions, and even create big name rookies onto teams. Definitely makes me miss the side scroller football game design. I know it wasn't perfect for strategy but the presentation always seemed closer to actually watching a real game. The only Sega game I found that could compete with the Tecmo series as far as entertainment value was Joe Montana's Sports Talk Football II. Similar side scrolling presentation, a tiny bit of voice announcers, smooth gameplay, and pretty impressive graphics for the time but still nowhere close to Tecmo Bowl.

One of the most OP kick return teams on SNES: The Los Angeles college team (likely UCLA but no license) in Super Play Action Football. I used to always pick them and avoid the whole hassle of having to play offense.

I've never been big on football games. During the 16 bit era, I had Quarterback Club 95. It was pretty good

Super high impact was awesome!

The big flaw in 16-bit Tecmo Super Bowl (and all the revivals since then) is that you can’t throw the ball more than like 30 yards down the field. It’s a lot harder to beat the CPU defense through the air because you literally can’t get deep. The end zone to end zone throws in 8-bit TSB were ridiculous but in a fun way. Also: Super High Impact was WILD in the arcade. Tons of fun.

LOVED Super Play Action... had High School, College and NFL gameplay with the rules for each as they were in real life. The map wasnt so bad... and the High School teams were custom so you could make them whatever they needed to be. The plays went well if you know what you are doing, but the controls change with each format.

You should definitely do one on all the basketball games on the SNES! People always talk about NBA Jam only, but tecmo super basketball isn't half bad.

In Madden ‘97 I believe Jax and Carolina were hidden teams, both ranked 99. In Madden ‘98 they were playable with actual roster and ratings. That may be the only difference, and updated rosters for the year. Ps. Sterling Sharpe caught the first NFL td I witnessed in real life lol!?! Great player for the Packers. I love your videos.

Nice video, but I have to disagree with you on NCAA Football. I had (and still own) that game for years, and it's a very fun game. Now sure, it does have a steep learning curve for both passing the ball and kicking field goals, but once you master it (the passing at least), it becomes a very fun game. And honestly, there was a trick I learned and would always do on passing plays that would make a completion every time. So I would definitely give this game a second look if I were you, as it is probably the best college football game on the SNES.

Bill Walsh absolutely had real teams and rosters. Players are identified by numbers as is the case with all ncaa games. I would look into that a little closer if I were you.

I remember renting NFL Football with a friend. We thought the game was broken, it was SOOOOO slow. Just incredibly frustrating and tedious. It's amazing to me that anyone thought this was acceptable to release.
