Every Style of Hot Dog We Could Find Across the US
Ойын-сауық
Hot dogs are about as American as apple pie. It's not uncommon for different states to offer their unique spins on classic American cuisine, and the hot dog industry is no exception. While some stands and shops take inspiration from other popular local cuisines for their toppings (like adding coleslaw or fish sticks to their classic franks and buns), others insist on layering, excluding, or adding ingredients to ensure their dogs remain a distinct staple to their regional style.

LA street hot dogs have a special place in my heart, every single concert or event I've been to in LA, you bet a street vendor will be waiting outside grilling some tasty dogs, the caramelized onions are the best part!
@Park_Place
6 күн бұрын
There are two rules of thumb when it comes to street dogs: 1. The less official the stand is, the better the food is. If that sweet old Mexican lady is cooking out of a laundry cart and keeps her ketchup and mustard in rinsed-out Suavitel containers, the dogs are gonna be fire. They'll also be super generous with the portions and give you a sausage wrapped in 4 bacon strips topped with a pound of onion for like $6. 2. The more indistuingishable each ingredient is, the tastier the hot dog will be. You don't want your street dog to look like the photo at Costco food courts. All the ingredients need to mix and make the dog look like garbage in order to maximize the flavor per bite.
Those Sonoran Dogs look amazing.
Today I learned that apparently Greek immigrants are hot dog experts. There's like three or four people featured here that made the first of various regional dogs. I, an Italian-American, find more reasons to respect Greece and its people as the days go by. :D

I would like to try ALL of them. But being from the Midwest the Chicago Dog is a favorite of mine as is the Cozy Dog corn dog from Cozy Dog in Springfield IL who also claims to be the original inventor. Also, one of the last places to serve foot long dogs is a little stand known as Carls in Brentwood Mo. I'm 74 and have been stopping by Carls for a footlong or two and a cold, frosty schooner of IBC root beer since I was 13. Closest thing to heaven without having to die first.
I grew up in South Carolina, and as far back as I can remember my parents would make Carolina Dogs. So these are a must for a real Carolina dog, but I will say that the pink wiener is totally optional. It must have a nice chili with no beans, a coleslaw that can be creamy, but must have some vinegar in it, a nice yellow mustard and some chopped sweet Vidalia onions. I love almost all hotdogs, but the Carolina Dog in my opinion, when made right, is absolutely the best. There is also a Carolina burger that I grew up on as well that has the exact same ingredients, but obviously with a Cheeseburger or regular burger and instead of a hotdog. Wendy's actually sold a Carolina Burger for a limited time, and was pretty good, but the coleslaw needed more vinegar.

As a North Carolinian, our dogs are staples here. But nothing can compete to a coney, (or the skyline dog, but I’ve always still heard them referred to as coneys by my mom who was raised there) all the way with Skyline Chili and Tabasco on top during a cold day. I was 8 when I had my first ever coney in Cincinnati. It was cold as hell outside, and I put Tabasco on top of those chili cheese and onions (I hated onions as a kid but this converted me) and I took a bite of my first ever real deal dog and fell in love. This is a great story. We ran a Top Dog cart in DFW for years and brought in different hot dogs and buns from around the country. By far, the Chicago style was the most popular followed by a Texas chili dog. We only did catering jobs and were booked solid from Memorial Day through football season. We traveled to many different spots and a few of our favorites were the Skyline, Maxwell Polish, the Sonoran and the Detroit Coney. If you’re ever in Denver, a trip to Biker Jim’s is a treat as is Pink’s in LA. The ripper in NJ is also a great dog but the Italian served at Jimmy Buff’s was too much for us.

This is false. Chocolate has never been used in Skyline chili. I'm allergic to it and enjoy eating there. That myth came about when someone posted a copycat recipe in the Cincinnati Enquirer in the 70s-80s claiming to have cracked the code. They thought they discovered chocolate was giving it it's color, but were mistaken. That didn't stop every mother and grandmother from copying it down and putting it in their recipe box. So, now if you eat homemade Cincinnati chili from grandma's "secret recipe" you're really eating a failed copycat recipe from 40-50 years ago. It's why homemade tastes nothing like Skyline.

I mean, they're standing right in front of you with a row of buns all the way up their hairy, bare arms moments before serving you. In recent years, they've cut back on this tradition (probably for sanitary reasons), but they still do it a bit. I've heard stories of people getting skeeved out and refusing to eat.
All-beef Nathan’s- Sabrett- Dirty Dogs- Chicago Dogs. Just sauerkraut- spicy mustard- and I’m happy. Some of the dogs presented are absolutely “gut-wrenching!” No chili - absolutely no cream cheese!! I’m still in mourning over the closure of Old Original Levis’s on 6th Street in Philadelphia. As a kid - we could walk there from my grandmom’s house!! Absolute best! Sadly, after the older family members passed- younger family opted to sell it to an outsider. It wasn’t the same and died soon after!
The Rhode Island Hot Weiner is the one I want to try the most. It definitely most resembles the Aussie Snag which is what I'm accustomed to. We do ours on regular white bread with fried onions and usually ketchup.

I love Chicago dogs and i even hate mustard but for those ill eat it lol. Oh and i highly recommend checking out CozyDog in Springfield IL. Theyre similiar but different from corn dogs. They're worth it. The recipe is just different. Youll probably like them better then corn dogs. I personally do. Theyre a tourist staple in Springfield. You guys got that wrong. Its Springfield Illinois.....I live in Illinois and go there all of the time and they tell the history. I know the history well because I'm a nerd with this lol.

As a person who has lived in Seattle my whole life. The Seattle Dog was new to me about 20 years ago, in the early 2000’s. Ate one on our way into a Mariner’s game. But have since seen them as a staple after a night out in downtown Seattle!! The true form is in a bagel style bread with cream cheese. But a Kaiser roll is also except-able

My favorite is the New York Dirty water hot dog. But i can understand how so many love the Chicago Hot Dog. I had my first Chicago Dog at Wrigley Field and it was amazing.
This was a cool video. Now I have some experimenting to do next summer
as a chicagoan, im happy to see jimmy’s red hots being featured for a second
I've had my own variation of a chili dog that probably shows its roots pretty strongly: a grilled toploader bun, either a Syracuse coney (white hot dog!) or an all-beef hot dog, a chili sauce, Tabasco and fine-shredded Cheddar.

Chicago style is my all time favorite but that chili coleslaw dog looked good AF
i don't think I could decide which one is best. They all are so freaking good.
Carolina Dogs are amazing. Meaty chili, cheese, and a cool slaw all work so well together. Throw some pickled jalapenos into the mix to spice things up. The bagel dogs might be the best thing to ever come from Seattle. I've never had a Reuben Dog, but it's my favourite sandwich, so I imagine it'd be really good
Damn! I want a hotdog now lol this has inspired me to take hotdog road trip tour across the US

Back in the day, there were so many places here in NJ that served "Texas Weiners". Most all of them were owned and operated by Greek immigrants. The thing that made them special was the sauce put on the hot dog and you could even get chili burgers and chili fries as well. The sauce was made up mostly of spices from the Mediterranean region. I have made it at home many times....it is Cincinnati chili made with simmering ground beef with many spices and yes, unsweetened cocoa powder, cinnamon and all spice are indeed in there. So even though you were in NJ eating a Texas weiner, you were eating Cincinnati chili . Incidentally in Cincinnati, they serve it over spaghetti but you can have it all the way with shredded cheddar, sliced onions and all.
Seeing the Italian Hot Dog on here filled my heart with so much New Jersey Pride. It filled it with cholesterol too, but mostly pride.
My first job when I was 16 was at Hot Dog Charlie's at a local mall. We served only hot dogs (small, regular and "big Charlie's", which were foot long) and soda. Also rice pudding for dessert. Nothing else. At the time (1989) that location had the highest sales than any other location. There were half a dozen open at that time. Christmas is when the most $ was brought in because the mall, Crossgates was the most popular in the area....😁

Hot dog Charlie’s will always be a massive part of my childhood. Love it so much
I'll be cooking four hot dogs at home today or tomorrow. Here's how this show happens. I put four hot dog buns on a plate. I put the four weiners, with holes punched in them with a fork, in a pot of boiling water. I add taco seasoning and black pepper in to the water. In a pan I start heating two cans of chili sauce and add chopped sweet onions to it. I use a squeeze bottle of mustard and liberally fill the buns with mustard. When the weiners are ready I put one in each bun. Then all four hot dogs get absolutely covered with the chil sauce and chopped onions. The entire plate is covered so it's necessary to use a fork. Sometimes I'll put shredded cheese on top but this time I might use sauerkraut. I live in Texas but many of the hot dogs you showed looked good.
You missed the boat on the New England Hot dogs. We have two kinds, the ordinary one, the one served on a lobster roll like "bun" called a "hot dog roll" with yellow mustard, sweet relish and chopped union with the roll toasted. The other is called a Coney Island hot dog. This is the one you described as "New York System". These first showed up in Fall River, MA, in 1915 at a place callled Geroge's with yellow mustard Greek sauce and and a big topping of finely chopped onions on a regular hot dog bun. In 1920 Nick came up from Philly and opend Nick's Coney Island" on Main street (Rt 138 MA) . For some 58 years, this set the standard for Coney's. n 1948, King Phillip Lunch opened up selling this kind of dog and in 1966 Fa-Neek's Hot Dogs opened on Plymouth Ave. There were several also rans like Tex Barry's, Jerry's and the top dog of the North End, Roger's. Now, all I know of in the South end are Nick's, which has or had a website, Fe-Neeks' and a relatively newcomer, and my favorit, JJ's hot dog which is the typical Coney in this city; yellow mustard, sauce (usually of the owners creation) and finely chopped onions. I had my first hot dog in 1951 at the age of 5 at the Tiverton, RI Lions Club Carnival and it's been a love affair ever since. Nowadays in faFall River you can get coney's in more places than "regular" hot dogs. The best of the regualrs I ever had was at the A&W on Townsend Hill on South Man St which closed in 2003 or 4. Winnesimett on Stafford Rd in Tiverton, RI was one of the last places I know of that sold Foot-long hot dogs, which I first had in 1956 at a diner near where I used to live on Main Rd, RT 138 RI Tiverton RI. When I saw that thing coming in my direction, I was blown away. In the backfround, my uncle John had fed the jukebox and it was playing THE FLYING SAUCER: pT1. I was 10 or 11 and all was right with the world. I guess hot dogs ar the "all's right with the world" food. I'm 78 and just can't see the hubbub over the burger, for me, the hot dog is the All-American fun on a bun
“The best dogs sound like a dare. “-awesome sentence.
This is a really good video. I had no idea there were that many types of hot dogs. I knew all of the main ones but this was unexpected. I can’t sleep and now I want a hot dog. But if I could pick any of those, I would have a hard time picking one. I try not to eat them very often but sometimes you just need a hot dog. Shout out to my mom who loved corn dogs.
All beef hotdog with chopped raw onions, dill relish and mustard, melted white cheddar on the bun is optional but recommended.
Never thought my hometown of Pottstown Pa would ever be said on this channel.
No "volcano dogs", that many here in Pittsburgh like? It's just a chili dog with lots of Frank's RedHot sauce and crushed red pepper flakes. With or without onions, it's pretty yummy. 🌭😋👌

The crazy thing about this list is, there are still even more regional hot dog styles that aren't on it. I grew up in Plattsburgh, NY, and locally we had Michigans, a type of chili dog that could be found in multiple local hot dog restaurants, even being the name sake of one such place. Funny how so many places across America have their own idea of what the best way to serve a Hot Dog is.

@@tobiashaswell9846 The meat sauce on a Michigan isn't really "chili". It looks like chili but it tastes very different. It's made with Molasses, vinegar, tomato paste, and various spices. It tastes more like BBQ than chili.
Warren , Ohio’s Hot Dog Shoppe Chili cheese dogs and Huntington West Virginia’s Stewart’s hot dogs as well, those are my favorites. I like other dogs, but these two are my hometown comfort foods that I go for immediately when I’m with family.

You should make a video about the weird cult-like following for White Castle, there's nothing that affects me the way those little steamed burgers with delicious patties, pickle, and onion juice drippings do. I'll never forget the first time I ever ate it I was 16 years old, and I ate a whole 10 sack of original sliders. I didn't even know that I liked onions until that day, it was in a parking lot in northeastern Ohio with my father. I've driven over 75 miles sometimes just to visit one of these restaurants, from Phoenix Arizona all the way to New York City I've had White Castle sliders. For a 100-year-old Burger place, they're really effective at marketing and they introduced the world to the greatest Trifecta of burger flavors which is onion, pickle, cheese. A lot of higher-end smashburgers and burgers of that nature only use onion pickle and cheese, so it's weird that they introduced that holy Trinity but with their own twist on it: the burgers are steamed in the onions, the onions are scooped off of the grill after caramelizing, and haphazardly tossed onto the burger, and the buns are stacked heel to top in order to absorb moisture and soften. The pickles are unceremoniously tucked in between the burger halves as it's assembled. It is the greatest of all American cheeseburgers.

You need to add Glaziers to your NYS dogs. They're from Potsdam. And if you're headed up that way, you might as well go to Plattsburgh and get a Michigan hot dog.
In Cumberland Maryland where my dad came from there is a Coney Island dog restaurant that is famous city wide and I remember fondly. The restaurant is called Curtis’s and opened in 1919.
When you showed the D'Angelo's for RI Weiner dogs I used to live the next street over and walked and grew up right there. If you follow main street up a little bit more you get to the towns own New york system. I spent so many years growing up biking around those streets grabbing some food for pretty cheap and then getting on the bike path that ran right next to it down to the skate park.
