Every Single Lightsaber COLOR MEANING Explained (All Known 13+ Colors) [2022 UPDATED] [CANON]

Ойын-сауық

Although having a lightsaber does not make one a Jedi, the Lightsaber is a crucial part of a Padawan’s journey towards becoming a master. Across the galaxy, the Jedi, Sith and other force wielding groups use lightsabers of a range range of colours... But what do these colours mean? Well I’m going to break down every single known lightsaber Color in Canon and exactly what they tell you about the user. So hit that Red Subscribe button to purify it and let’s get into it.
#StarWars #kybercrystal #lightsaber
A lightsaber blade’s colour emanates from the kyber crystal inside of it’s hilt. This is the heart of a lightsaber and it’s colour is determined the moment the user harvests it from its resting place. So in essence, a lightsaber’s color reveals something about it’s wielder and their personality.
So that leads us to *number 1. Blue Lightsabers.*
Blue lightsabers are the most common seen among members of the Jedi order during the time of the Clone Wars. Blue lightsabers are used by Jedi Guardians, who prefer to focus on lightsaber combat and honing their aggressive negotiation skills. Jedi Guardians are a mirror to Sith Warriors from many millenia ago and they were seen as the Order’s representatives to the rest of the Galaxy, using combat to protect those in need. Guardians spent most of their time honing their martial arts skills and on peacekeeping missions in violent locations. Some prominent examples of Jedi Guardians are Anakin Skywalker, Count Dooku when he was still a Jedi and even Ki-Adi Mundi.
*Number 2. Green Lightsabers*
Green lightsabers were usually wielded by Jedi Consulars. If a Jedi who was about to harvest his kyber crystal was more in tune with the cosmic force than the living force, he would be granted a green lightsaber crystal.

Cyan and orange aren't just shown in Fallen order. They made their appearance in KOTOR and KOTOR 2. No real background story on their meanings though Maybe it's just a coloured kyber without a meaning. Although in KOTOR two there is something interesting you can get only one or the other depending on your light, or Darkside alignment. This is surely a game mechanic but it opens up the possibility of a natural color for light, or Darkside.

In the original expanded universe, after Samuel L. Jackson's insistence in the movies, the purple lightsaber was for a weapons/lightsaber master. Also, the crystals were not originally "mood crystals", but crystals assigned to those who followed specific paths in the Jedi Order. The white crystals were originally made through alchemy as white crystals were not found naturally and were part of a new factional order splitting off of the New Jedi Order that Luke Skywalker had built up. The original Expanded Universe is far better than the disney garbage that is out there. Though, from what I understand, The Mandalorian is a great show and is on my to watch list.

It's so interesting to me how advanced the symbolism for these colors has become. They originally just picked colors, right? There's the famous story about why Luke's saber changed to green. They were filming in a real desert and the blue didn't show up very well, so they made it green. But it's really cool how it's expanded over the years and become so much more than just that.

@@rudolphclancy8293 I think it became that, but originally the choice was purely practical. It's the same with purple. There never was any symbolism. I’ve heard that too but I heard an audio clip of Lucas working it out with the team in the early stages of the script, and says “well anakin lost his light sabre in a volcano fight with obi wan before getting burned, and reborn as Vader… That’s the one which is given to Luke, and Luke looses his fathers sabre when he learns the truth in the last movie, so in this third one he’ll make his own lightsaber to show him becoming his own man” - and one of the other guys goes, “that’s great! we should make it a brand new colour too. Like maybe green or something, so people can visually see that idea, something not red or blue”

  • @epmcgee

    @epmcgee

They wouldn't 'pick' colours. They would have to be in tune with the force enough that they could locate THEIR Kyber crystal. It was about forming a link with a pre-existing crystal, an embodiment of the force that resonated with them. This would lead padawans on journeys to find a naturally formed crystal. Additionally, red crystals were all synthetic.

Its about the discipline and the code. If you are using the force for "your benefit", then you are just "exploiting it". Which is what the dark side is, i think. They go so far off into the exploiting side, that they are no longer attuned to it, losing control. It has to be like a partner i think, its good that you have someone by your side, every once in a while its nurturing presence(both in materialistic sense and emotional) helps you go through some of the hardships of life, but at the moment you start actively abuse your partner for the benefits, it starts to get problematic real fast.

Not sure if this would technically be canon anymore since it’s only mentioned in legends, but part of the (in universe) reason was that Jedi and Sith usually had an invisible “force shield” around them that protected them to an extent from other force users. Without it, their opponents would be able to do things like shove them around, take their lightsaber or even just turn it off in their hands. To do anything to them you’d need some way to either get around the shield or break through it, so unless there was a big enough power difference to just break through (such as when Yoda took Ventress’ lightsabers in tcw) it’s usually better to just attack with the lightsaber in the hopes of breaking their focus since it wasn’t something automatic and actually something that they needed to consciously make and maintain throughout the fight

My personal theory for the orange saber meaning is that it's an inverse of the meaning of the blue saber (since orange and blue are opposites). Blue wielders focus on going and destroying evil and protecting others, but orange would mean someone protecting themselves and destroying evil from within. It could also combine with the theory that Orange represents trauma and that it's a mirror of yellow. Except instead of improving themselves with skills, they improve themselves mentally and spiritually.

I love how lightsaber colours have snowballed into this big extension of character, force attunement and general personality. They were all originally white until it was hard to tell who's saber was who's whilst the iconic Death Star lights were shining in the Obi Wan v Vader fight in 1977, so blue and red came about. Then green became a thing because of the Sail Barge fight and Luke's blue lightsaber didn't show up well against the sky so green was made. Then purple because nobody says no to Samuel L Jackson. And now the colours have advanced symbolism for what kind of Jedi a character is. So cool.

My interpretation of the meaning behind the orange saber is that its wielder was put through extreme physical and/or mental trauma, but still managed to remain on the Light Side. Orange lightsaber wielders can be seen as having significant mental fortitude, since they experienced an incredible amount of suffering but still refused to turn to the Dark Side. Cal Kestis, having survived Order 66 as a youngling and being forced into hiding, would obviously be a wielder of an orange saber.

I remember in the Extended Universe books that it was literally what materials they had around them, with some chosen because they were well known to work and others being novel solutions other Jedi's didn't think of. There were also Jedi in the books who had the switches on the inside so if you weren't a force user you could never turn it on. Then others took a queue from modern camera lenses and had the ability to adjust the saber's focus on the fly to make it slightly longer or shorter mid combat. It was very much more of a technical device than the kind of mood ring the cartoons made canon.

Too much darkness or too much light will both leave you blind. An example of this would be the years upon years of Jedi not having a dark side to combat, thus they strayed too far from their roles from serving the living Force to serving the Republic and didn't see the Sith rise back to power under their noses.

I always thought that Cyan colored blades meant that the Jedi in question were more than willing to use both the force or their saber to resolve a situation. Because Jedi Consulars used green sabers and relied more on the force, and Jedi Guardians preferred saber combat to the force used a blue saber. So logically the Jedi who had no preference and used the two equally would have a Cyan colored blade as it represented both schools of thought.

About the Cyan lightsaber, there was one lightsaber wielder from the comics who could potentially be part of the canon known as Exar Kun, who had a Cyan kyber crystal. It might be the inspiration for the Cyan blade color in Fallen Order.

In Star Wars: The Force Unleashed you can unlock a black lightsaber that looks very similar to the darksaber (Black center with a white glow) but in the traditional shape of a lightsaber blade. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it, though I doubt there are any examples of it in canon.

In the old canon, I thought sentinels were those who focused more on other pursuits rather than force use and saber use. Like learning hacking, how to be a mechanic, etc. Also believe the dark saber is a lightsaber type called a Broadsaber, however due to it's flat blade, it was deemed bad for every day use and not good for blaster bolt deflection, so much like the crossguards, it's not often used due to the lack of utility.

I'm fairly certain that's the real reason cyan crystals were reintroduced into canon. A lot of original star wars fans didn't like the newer blue color crystals and wanted the original blue, so games put cyan crystals in to make everyone happy.

I think ive heard that purple, orange, cyan, silver, and white sabers werre most often used by dark or grey jedi to sympathize the level of balance that each user had with different aspects of both sides of the force. Dark jedi mostly using purple or orange to symbolize a more aggressive connection to the living force balance whereas the grey jedi are more in touch with the cosmic force aspects of both sides and so using cyan, silver, and white.

I can’t remember where I read it but orange represented a Jedi pacifist who would use negotiation and the force and avoided conflict at all cost. The sabre was for personal defence only. It’s a little contradictory but I do like the explanation

Atris in KOTOR 2 also used what looks to be a cyan blade, and Siri Tachi also used a purple blade (Jedi apprentice novels), though thats now Legends.. and now with Ashoka being released we know that Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati also use orange sabres, giving more weight to the idea that the orange blade is perhaps a failed bleedingf a crystal. There are also black and white blade pickups in TFU, (my personal faves to play with), though again Legends... :)

Magenta was a color crystal in SWTOR as far back as 2011/12 - it was part of a secret questline that involved having to do some busywork, and then one of the world bosses (I think it was on Belsavis). Trust me, I would know, I was the first person on my server to get it :)

I personally still enjoy the idea of Jedi master Yadal still having an orange light Saber. And the theory for how it came to be was that she was forced to have to live off of nature on a deathless planner will still being a padowan. So orange is The colour of a naturalist Jedi who is in tune with natures chaotic order for survival.

If anybody played Star wars Galaxies then you might remember the Kyber Crystals. Who else would have loved to see them as part of canon? For people that don't know, different crystals had very different effects, it wasn't determined by colour. My personal favourite was known as 'The Carrot Stick'. The crystal was found on Mustafar and was larva based. Guess what that did to people.

My take on the pink/magenta lightsaber, is that Jedi wielders that has a pink/magenta color prefer to talk things out than to fight and it could also be applied with the force as well and since it's a mix of red and white there those who hold in the dark side and once they can't control it they snap

I think those last ones would go like this: Indigo- I’m almost a purple, but Im kinda scared of the dark side so I only use it in “emergencies”. Magenta- I’m in the dark side, but I use a tiny bit of the light side so I’m right between red and purple. Cyan- I’m right in transition to become a Jedi counselor. I’m actually surprised they missed pink. That should be for a semi-purified red saber.

My lightsaber was always dark blue when I played Jedi as a kid. I had no idea they had meanings, it was just my favourite colour. My interpretation of it, once I figured out they had meanings, was that it similar to a blue blade, but instead of jumping straight into combat the Jedi would use stealth and the element of surprise to take out their target, like a kind if Jedi assassin.

  • @Waldo_Wedger

    @Waldo_Wedger

Actually they haven't such meanings before Disney. In old canon there was more logical explanation: jedis used natural crystals from Ilum that were usually blue or green. Other colors happened when jedi used crystal from a different source. I.e. Windu had a real quest to get his own. Siths at the same time used artificial crystals and for them creator could choose color, but they've already had tradition to make them red. BTW Luke's green crystal was artificial as well, but he didn't select color as had no expirience.

I have a theory of the orange saber color. I like to think of it as something that is rebuilt from something broken. Earlier in fallen order, Cal said his connection to the force was not as strong as it used to be, as if his connection broke, or fractured. Now during the game, he obviously gets stronger, realizing his errors and comes to an acceptance of what has happened, therefore restoring his connection. Although it's just a theory....... *A GAME THEORRRRRRY!*

Cals Kyber crystal being orange could also be a nod to his "dark jedi" path. We see a lot of his relationship with the dark side in both games, and we're now seeing similar outcomes in shows like Ashoka with the dark jedi Balen Skohl and Sin Hati. I like to see orange sabers as being held by those willing to touch the dark side in the aid of others. Stealing to fead the poor, vigilante justice, eye for an eye. A more dark sided approach to the Sentinelels values.

  • @brainwrinkles

I honestly think that in fallen order yellow would've been the perfect colour for cal to have by default when you rebuild your broken lightsaber, mainly because by that point you've master a lot of force abilities, so it would bring a cool detail as you've unlocked different skills using the force and attacks that use the force (and no I don't mean the force meter), plus like he said in the video a yellow or orange lightsaber would also suit cal a lot
