All of their personas are from pop culture legends or historical references it's pretty cool

At some point Futaba texts "Make like a tree and get outta here" which is a back to the future reference.

Just a small note for the Makoto movie fact. "Like a Dragon" is the name of the franchise in Japan since its inception. Not just since the "Yakuza: Like a Dragon" recent release. Great video over all though!

In the spanish version of the game theres a movie you can view called “betsy la fea” which is a reference to a colombian series “betty la fea” that got popular all over the world and has been traduced to a lot of languages

There’s a riot symbol (League of Legends) on the back of Futabas laptop. Her English voice actor voices Zoe, and Zoe’s first skin is literally a cyber model referencing Futaba.

A couple of my favorite references are late in the game. When Lavenza asks to see the Phantom Thieves and they talk in the chat about how to meet up with her, if Joker asks Morgana to do it, Futaba answers that The Cat and the Kid sounds like a good idea for a tv show that will easily get (I think) three seasons and a movie. I’m convinced that’s a “Community” reference. Not as ambitious as “six seasons and a movie,” but close enough. Then after one of the last Mementos missions, Mishima contacts Joker and gets emotional. If Joker asks him if he’s crying, Mishima answers, “I’m not crying; it’s just raining on my face,” which is a line from a hilarious song from “The Flight of the Concords” about ridiculous excuses men make to hide that they’re crying. Both of these really made me laugh.

You missed a lot with the video games. "Power Intuition" is based on an old Atlus IP called Power Instinct, which actually had a boss character designed by Kaneko with SMT demons as summon assists.

I think one of the animations in the opening scene of P5 (where Joker escapes the casino only to get caught) has a running animation that looks similar to a Lupin the Third opening animation! Also, the cafe LeBlanc is named like the author of the Arsene Lupin series - Maurice LeBlanc, and more obviously Joker's persona IS named Arsene! (You can eventually make the persona i think named Raoul, which is ALSO a reference to the book series because if i remember correctly that is Arsene's real name) those are just some that i know! :)

Interesting, I always thought that when discussing Makoto's code name, Rider was a reference to the Fate series. You also missed another reference to Star Wars. If you go on a trip with Futaba to help you reach the next confidant rank, there is a place you can go where she will say "Help me Joker. You are my only hope!" I forget what the place is called but it is between Yongen and Shinjuku.

After Makoto joins the team, Ryuji will compliment Johanna and say smt like (it's been a while since I last played the game, okay?) "It's just like the song! I'm a phantom, on a steel bike I ride!" Makoto will then text saying that it's not how the song goes. This is originally a song by Bon Jovi, called Dead or Alive. And the lyrics go "I'm a cowbow, on a steel horse I ride." I pogged so hard when I first saw this in game, I had literally just played that song couple minutes before it. It's nice to see someone in Atlus has good taste in music.

Another Fist of the North Star reference is in one of Futaba’s lines for her all out attack where she says “Youre already dead!”

This might be a bit of a stretch, but I feel in one mementos conversation might have another Sonic one. Ann says that her tail keeps getting in the way, and if Futaba replies, she says "Tails are so cool... I'd want two if I could", like a certain two tailed fox. Might be a stretch, but Futaba's Japanese voice actress is a big Sonic fan

0:40 This might actually be the reason why Sophia calls him a racoon (Or did she call him a tanuki, I forgot) in Strikers. As that is most likely a reference to Chopper from One Piece, who has the same japanese va as Pikachu and Morgana.

I thought the Pink Panther thing might be a stretch, but then I remembered that in Japanese Ann's name suggestion was specifically "Pink Diamonds". I still think the Futaba winter outfit might be a stretch though.

Goro Akechi's name and character is also a reference to the detective Kogoro Akechi if I'm not wrong

A very obvious series of references I'm surprised you didn't mention would be literally all the movies you can go see in theaters.

I remember that when Makoto first joins, someone jokingly calls her the "Fist of the Phantom Star". I don't remember exactly when it happens or who says it, but I clearly remember it being there. Also, Xander Mobus wasn't always the Smash announcer. He started being the announcer in Smash 4 and stayed in Ultimate.

1) That was Ryuji and just in Royal to replace the previous reference 2) If you’re the announcer in Smash, you’re also Master Hand and Crazy Hand which makes sense as Smash is *their* world

There's also a Doraemon reference when you first go to Kaneshiros Palace where Ryuji talks to Morgana and asks if he has some kind of gadget to get to Kaneshiros Palace and Morgana responds that he is not a cat robot

Its not just a reference, if My Neighbour Totoro got wiped from everyones minds Morgana would be unable to transform, because the only reason he can transform is because a cat bus is a common thought in the masses hearts. (The helicopter transformation used up every last drop of Jose's Star's power because there was no public unconscious powering it)

There was another nod to yakuza like a dragon in the game. In a social link with makoto she says she is excited for or currently playing a game called "Dragon, like a yakuza" (I apologise i am not remembering the details)

There’s a Bon Jovi reference when the the thieves were messaging each other following makoto’s awakening. When Ryuji was saying that she’s “like a phantom on steel horse I ride” in which she responded that she’s not “wanted “. Both referring to the song Dead or Alive

Also the Lupin the 3rd reference? It only gets funnier when you listen to Kawakami and the principal... As well as Arsene...being Lupin.

I just finally beat Persona 5 Royal for the first time, and there was one thing that always bothered me. See, for the entire playthrough I was using the Featherman outfits and it bothered me that out of all the colored outfits, most of the Phantom Thieves use colors matching their elements. However, what bothered me is the fact that the Fire Persona user wore pink, the Wind Persona user wore black, and the Darkness user wore red. So the moment you mentioned Ann references the "Pink Panther", it all clicked.

Theres a reference that Ryuji makes i think during a text sometime after Makoto's awakening (i think) "Im a phantom, on a steel horse i ride." Makoto responds with "it helps that im not wanted dead or alive" or something like that. These lines are a reference to a song by Bon Jovi, "Wanted Dead or Alive." The lyrics being "im a cowboy, on steel horse i ride, im wanted, dead or alive." Also, in the beginning of Ryuji's and Makoto's showtime, theres a board in the background that has wanted papers of them on it. Also, in one of the retro games, when you beat a level, it plays the end battle music from Final Fantasy 7.

I purchased switch just for this game being hinted to come soon I even purchased hard copy strikers for full experience, I realized i noticed half of these through casually playing the first game save.

It's a stretch, but I like the idea that one of the choices for Joker to say when the Phantom Thieves try to decide their next target in the group chat (I think this was after recruiting Fox) was an Evil Overlord may have been a reference to the Disgaea series as Overlords are a majore thing in the series. Like I said, it's a stretch.

another reference in the game is when you go to the movies for bite club which is a direct reference to fight club even quoting the rules to fight club.

The shadows in Okumura's palace are daleks from Dr. Who

Morgana transforming into a bus being a comman thought in mementos is a call out to a movie idk wich one tho

There is also one reference to DnD I forgot when but futaba says something along the lines of "Im so lucky I could roll a nat 20." I know it's not technically a video game but it is a GAME per sa

There's also a reference to power rangers , specifically Power Rangers Lost galaxy. One of the weapons you can pick up for Akechi is called the Quasar Saber which is the signature weapons for the Galaxy Rangers.
