The Mongol Empire was the largest Empire in history. But did it just fall? Did it just rise, conquer half the known world and then dip? No, of course not. After their rise to power, the Mongol Empire divided itself into 4 parts, the Golden Horde in the West, ruling over the Rus. The Chagatai, ruling over Central Asia. The Ilkhanate, ruling over Persia and the biggest one, the Yuan, ruling as a new Chinese dynasty. Who would be the one that gives us the final significant Mongol successor state?!

The earliest reference to the Mongols classifies them as a Tang dynasty tribe of Shiwei during the eighth century. It was only after the fall of the Liao dynasty in 1125 that they became an important tribe on the Central Asian steppe, but tribal wars weakened their power over the ensuing century. During the thirteenth century, the term Mongol was used to refer to the Mongolic and Turkic tribes who fell under the control of Genghis Khan. The Mongols are primarily a shamanist society; their central deity is the sky god Tenger.

The eastern chagatai khanate lasted much longer than the western chagatai khanate, as it was suceeded by Moghulistan and Yarkent Khanate. Yarkent fell in 1705, while Moghulistan became the Kumul Khanate which fell in 1930.

The name Mongol appeared first in the eighth-century Chinese records of the Tang dynasty, but only resurfaced in the eleventh century during the rule of the Khitan. At first, it was applied to some small and insignificant nomadic tribes in the area of the Onon River. In the thirteenth century, however, the name Mongol grew into an umbrella term for a large group of Mongolic and Turkic tribes united under the rule of Genghis Khan. It is not clear what the Mongols called themselves in their own languages. In fact, the specific origin of the Mongolic languages is unclear. Some linguists have proposed a link to languages like Tungusic and Turkic, which are often included alongside Mongolic in a hypothetical language group called “Altaic languages”, but the evidence for this is rather weak.

The Qing dynasty (and the Later Jin before that) was arguably a Mongol successor state too. In 1636, the Northern Yuan ruler would hand over the Mongol imperial seal, one of the central symbol of the Great Khan's authority, to the first Qing emperor Hong Taiji. The Qing rulers also called themselves Khan ("Han" )in their native Manchu language and would generally present themselves as a continuation of the Mongols when they dealt with Central Asia and Tibet. The Ming was technically a Yuan successor state too since they accepted the Yuan as a legitimate dynasty that the Ming had later replaced after the Yuan had lost the Mandate of Heaven.

Turkic has always been a predominantly spoken language, used at the courts of the local rulers, in the army, by rural or nomadic populations, and as a lingua franca among the multiethnic tribal confederations. It was even the language of communication in the Mongol army. Turkic has also been a supra-regional language of communication among smaller communities of speakers of minority languages and a means of communication among people of different ethnic backgrounds in certain social and professional groups, e.g. the Bāzārī class in Teheran.

The Mongol Empire had a rather interesting similarity to Rome's Rise, Decline, and collapse. The Mongols went from a irrelavent power in the middle of a region before conquerling literally everything they could. Like how Rome went from a City State to the Conquerers of the Italian Peninsula to the Mediterannean Superpower. They divided the empire in regions to keep the empire united but it didnt save the empire entirely since it still saw the eventual collapse of their empires. Both had their own eras of peace, the Pax Romana for the Romans and Pax Mongolica for the Mongols thanks to their massive power on the region they dominated in. The Yuan was similar to the Byzantines. The Byzantines were technically the Roman Empire [controversial!] and the Yuan was technically the Mongol Empire and held the capital of their respective empires. Constantinople for Byzantium, Khanbaliq for Yuan. Unlike popular misconcepction, the Mongol Empire had the World's Largest Navy under Kublai Khan's rule. Yet the only reason nobody remembers it is due to the fact most of it was destroyed during the many very successful attempts at conquering Japan due to Typhoons, Just like how Rome had their fleets destroyed due to storms during the Punic Wars. Except unlike Mongolia, Rome conquered Carthage eventually. Both empires were overextended and eventually collapsed under their own weight. Vastly different cultures and peoples yet their empires had a similar rise and fall.

[Controversial!] Well no, no its not controversial about weither or not its a Roman Empire, the only controversy is weither or not it would be considered a successor to the Roman empire, or straight up the Roman empire. The historical answer is, straight up, the one known popularly is Successor state because not latin anymore.

Although the Turks often comprised the bulk of the Mongol army as well as the bulk of armies opposed to the Mongols, throughout the domains of the Mongol Empire there was a diffusion of military technology, which has already bee and also ethnic groups. In addition to the Mongols and Turks, other ethnicities served in the Mongol military machine and found themselves distant from home. May, T.M., 2012.
