My sister’s bracelet all through high school. I noticed the shirt straight away! Thank goodness my sister had 2 of us older siblings to fill her in on stuff. Born into the same house, but she just believed so wholesome-ly everything my parents said. So much eye-rolling from us. And she’d be like, “Guys… I just don’t WANT to swear. I just don’t think we should do that. What is the big deal?” Or, EVERY even slightly rude joke, “I just don’t get it.” 🙄

My family never had that problem, I was one of 8 and we all liked to read and kind of took pride in sounding intelligent, mostly my brothers.

I remember when my dad used to yell about the "fucking assholes" at his job but then my parents had to sit me down and tell me to stop saying "heck" so much. Growing up sheltered was wild shit. My life was exactly like this video except that my parents fought right in front of me and because I had no outside influences, I was completely clueless about how to handle it and who to talk to about it. Glad my parents let me go to a public high school, or I'd really be fucked now lmao.

I really wish my patents had never taken me out of private Christian school. I could be totally asleep rn, going to church, with a cute white church wife and cute white church kids. But instead I started smoking crack in high school and never recovered, resorted to alcohol that became so routine it got me kicked out of the Marine Corp. My life has been a downhill spiral since this year. All because I started facing the modern world a little too late. I’m not even religious, but I wish I could go back and pretend. I’d pretend so good if it could get me a little credibility with decent people, I could even fake believing in God if it would make me happy again :)

I was a sheltered kid. Growing up was extra painful and difficult as a result. Add on some deep and painful social anxieties, ADHD, and depression. My adolescence was just a whole bundle of fun!

As the oldest of 5 who were all homeshooled, I'm glad some of you really seem grateful. For me it wasn't the same. 1 - 3 out of 4 sisters have been sexually assulted and none of us said anything because we were so ashamed and frankly couldn't even describe what was going on because we had no real terms/words for parts of the body, especially of the opposite sex. Luckily my youngest had older siblings, so has been able to recognize when things were not okay. 2 - speaking of unsafe situations. Its still hard to read social cues. Through college there were times friends felt like it was time to leave, I didn't understand why. Or I accepted drinks from guys in my 20s who then got extremely aggressive when I wasn't interested. Seems obvious now, but slow on the uptake 3 - speaking of social cues. My siblings have had a hard time finding jobs. They struggle putting themselves out there and then cannot relate to most of the interviewers. We were not raised on cable or pop music so even the basic "hey you catch the game last night?" falls flat because they don't know how to turn that around besides a simple "no". I know downer on a funny video, but seeing how so many of you were grateful for it and and are raising your kids like that I just wanted to offer another opinion.

Homeschooling is shit if your parents don’t implement decent social outlets. I did hella sports and got involved in some clubs so that was good, but I’ve known other homeschooling families where the kids were so protected that they basically weren’t able to function socially

As someone who has been put in uncomfortable sexual situations due to sheltering I wholeheartedly agree, that underpreparing your children for the real world should be criminal

We went through similar things and went to public school. No one at school intervened, but at least it was a break from home. Even though bullying at school was bad too. Abusers are abusers, it's not intrinsic in homeschooling, homeschoolers and being sheltered.

I wasn't a sheltered kid but I remember plenty of times acting like I got the joke but was really clueless... I'm an adult an still do it 🤣

I’ve met homeschooled sheltered kids who were much better adjusted and ready for the world than I was and I went to public school, was pretty sheltered, and was allowed to say “crap.” I think more than anything the mental/emotional health of the parents is the key factor.

I feel every second of this video. My younger sibling is almost 30 and is basically still like this. I’m the “rebellious one” who made friends, went to work, and tried new things. Hence I am just barely able to pay for the therapy I will likely need for decades to come 🙃

The best part is that all of the music he explained that he wasn't allowed to listen is like 20 years old, because that's all his parents know.

okay i love that i grew up in a loving home but being sheltered has its downfalls. i found out about *making baby stuff* when i was only 9. ofc i looked it up bc i was curious and we all know what i found. it turned into an addiction. ive struggled with that addiction since then. im sixteen now. i wish that my parents had actually had an open conversation with me about everything instead of bringing all of that shame into my life.

I don’t think you should blame. I don’t think it’s appropriate to tell a a kid younger than 10/11yrs about sexual stuff (unless in some cases). Mostly parents are encouraged to start having those conversations when the kid is nearing puberty.

@@elisakeese1401 I was sexually abused as a child, and so was my brother. We were told that sex was dirty and wrong and shameful. So we grew up with some really messed up, painful feelings and views about sexuality. I worked hard to try to overcome those and to view sexuality and sex as God intended it to be; natural, beautiful, amazing, enjoyable, healthy - with your spouse only. That doesn't mean kids don't have sexual thoughts or feelings. We're sexual beings; our bodies are made for sex and procreation. So when I had my son, I made up my mind that I would never turn away any question he had, and I would tell him things openly, honestly, and without embarrassment. So that's what I did, he is now 21 and we still talk openly about anything that's ever on his mind. You can break the cycle with yourself and your future children, too.

Hi Elise! You can overcome your addiction - it is absolutely possible. Try looking into resources from Matt Fradd and The Chastity Project. Also it effects women differently than men, so try to find books/articles specifically geared to women. The cycle of a women’s hormones make the temptation weak then strong depending on what part of your cycle you are at. Be patient with yourself. You’re not alone. There is a natural component of figuring out what things make you more apt to look into it, but then there is a supernatural component too, so don’t forget to pray. I will keep you in my prayers. May God bless you as you overcome your addiction.

This hits too close to home for me, I mean, if I hadn’t had friends I never would have broken out of it. I was pretty sheltered until sophomore year of high school. It was rough. I’m not THAT sheltered anymore, thank god, but there are still a bunch of things that I find every day that I missed out on because of the way I was raised.

I was pretty sheltered, too, until life really hit, and didn't know what tf to do. I also began to act wild because my grandmother was so strict. tbh I'm glad that I've done the things I did. at first I had alot of guilt and shame. but now I know what's for me and definitely what's not. It's a shame that it wasn't taught, but I'm glad that I still experienced and learned.

My parents did the same... so naturally I did a complete 180 once I realized what "the other world" was like and tried every illegal drug on the market prior to 18. And because of that "discipline" I now live 12 hours away and go to therapy. Doesn't work for everyone hahaha

I still remember the first time I read the Harry Potter books. They were flat out banned when I was living with my parents, so I had to read them in PDF format on a flash drive at 2 AM. It was an experience, lol.

I'm the only girl. 2 brothers (1, my twin) I was out numbered 2 to 1 but it felt like more when we had a family meeting Mom, DAD, Bro + Twin Bro about the rents finding out I lost my virginity. It still feels like I'm literally physically being violated every time I reflect on that traumatic experience. I have a funny story about this one about my Nephew. Here in Brazil, it's tradition to throw fireworks in Christmas or any other cheerful day or event like the Day of Our Lady, New Year, when Brazil scores a goal, etc.. but being a toddler, he was pretty scared about the noise. It was also his first real Christmas eve, given the past one, he was too young. So when I noticed there would be no way to distract him when midnight came, I came with an idea. He already knew how a birthday party works, and liked to sing "Happy Birthday" a lot, so I called everyone when the fireworks started: "Let's sing Happy Birthday to Jesus". We all sang Happy Birthday, treating the whole Christmas Party like a Birthday Party for Jesus, so all the Santa decorations were instead Birthday Decorations. It didn't help we rented a trampoline for kids to have fun, which is something we do here in Brazil for our kids' birthdays. Now even as a young toddler, he knows Christmas is Jesus' Birthday. BTW, Christmas works differently here in Brazil. We do gift one another and all and decorate everything with Santa stuff and Christmas lights, but we have a big BBQ Party or a Big dinner for the more traditional ones, like a real party not so different from a Birthday party. So Brazil's Christmas traditions are a blend of American Christmas traditions and Brazil's party traditions, so it's not unusual for people to get really drunk, throw fireworks, play loud songs completely unrelated to Christmas( Brazil doesn't have the tradition of making Christmas songs at all, so much that most of the songs we associate with Christmas are american ones like Jingle Bells but with a Portuguese lyrics), meet our extended family and friends, eat churrasco sometimes instead of Roasted Turkey, etc... Also, our population is mostly Catholic as well, so we have different decorations as well such as the Presépio, people parading in the steets for the "Missa do Galo", etc... and Presépio kinda looks like toys, so it helps giving this "Birthday vibe" even more.

My kids were Not allowed to watch SpongeBob or Rugrats. They were going to child Care at the gym and they had all the kids sit down and watch shows and my kids would sit at a table and do nothing and say we can't watch those videos because they're inappropriate

Being at least somewhat sheltered has to be better than knowing almost everything I think tho 🤷‍♀️😂 at least in my experience, I wish I hadn't known some things at such a young age

I was pretty sheltered, so I had a very limited understanding of “baby making” until after I got married. In fact, neither of us had any idea. 😂 Anyway, we’re a lot more open with our kids and answer any questions they ask us. In my opinion, it’s better to learn it from your parents in a safe environment than to learn it from your friends or peers. Less embarrassing, too!

my cousins have been homeschooled their entire life. not even going to high school. i brought up rap music once and they (a very catholic family) lost it. their response to something as simple as rap music said a lot about how they were raised.

I was a homeschooled Christian through K-12, and danced to hip hop in dance class and listened to it in high school. Mostly I still love 1960's music as my favorite decade. Some hip hop music is catchy, but newer stuff is just garbage. I was sheltered to a degree, but not this much. haha

Genuinely feel sorry for kids that grew up like this.

It's not bad, really. I practically live at work and it pays the bills. If there's more to life than that, I have no idea what it could be. And because of that, I'm perfectly happy to live and die as a corporate slave. Life is good.

My parents were Polish Catholic immigrants from Europe so I was very sheltered and brought up in a very strict household. It was constant church and praying multiple times a day.

This is really accurate lmao, my family's catholic and my mom's a cantor, so I was dreadfully sheltered until about middle school. It's like this cycle that you can't escape, I didn't have friends cause I couldn't relate to anyone, so I was basically just an idiot until I was finally allowed to buy my own ipod touch. After that I learned everything from the internet.

I was 17 years old when I learned an astounding truth about regular schmegular 'worldly folk.' We're talking the 'yes' of a lifetime. I was invited to dinner at my "boyfriends" house. Of course *Dad dropped me off & picked me up. Normally I was embarrassed when kids from school would ask "why can't you ride with anyone?" Well, let me just tell you [I would've re-memorized the Bible when I received those magical words: "Yes," Jackie, you may go to The McDaniels House for dinner] so being chauffered by my Daddio was just fine on this rare/unheard of occasion. Turns out I'd wind up being a bit salty as I walked out to Dad's Pick Up + Delivery Service truck after dinner. My dream dinner came with a very special parting gift. I'd say it was a combination of shock, anger, and confusion for what would be just one small lesson in the first of endless Christian Punks (ie) [Real Life isn't even remotely close to the Sheltered Existence you knew as a child, but ENJOY]! Thanks M+D😉 I asked my BFs Dad to "please pass the Angel Eggs." Naturally everyone burst into laughter & I stared or occasionally looked around in a haze of sheer confusion & humiliation. I wanted OUT of those devil worshipers house asap! I couldn't WAIT to tell my mom what they said. Surely it couldn't be true!? It was absurd! I truly couldn't fathom why anyone would suggest something so dark. 30 years later my children are 28 yrs old (yep, THAT bf/husband), and 19 yrs old. We still call them Angel Eggs but I informed them in advance that this crazy world might refer to them as a different less ap'pealing' egg. 🤗 I'm proud to tell this story today -although it wasn't always endearing to me, lol. I never met an Amy Grant song I didn't like. My dad went to Heaven a year ago & I miss his One of a Kind, Authentic Dad Language more than ever. You never wanted to hear dad get mad cause (He'll kick your suckin' hind end right off you). As for Mom, Boyeeee... don't let her get mad enough to say "Fooey on You" cause you gonna get it when dad gets home! I never thought I'd say it but I'm genuinely #Proud #Blessed #Thankful to have been raised in such a (conservative, strict) nondenominational, spirit filled, born again Christian home. My Mother continues to lead by her Saint Like Example. Agape Love y'all!

Omgosh!! My mom totally calls them "angeled eggs" too! I thought it was only my mom who called them that. I just roll my eyes every time I hear her say it.🙄 I call them deviled eggs and they are some of my favs. 🥚🥚 I made some last week. 😍😋

I remember one time when I was 4 I said "damn" and my mom washed my mouth out with soap lmao. Luckily, I'm 16 going on 17 so I get a bit more leeway, but she still gets legitimately angry at me if I say "sucks" (e.g, "that sucks"). She was raised in a very religious family (was pretty sheltered herself, ironically) and went to Catholic school until college, but still, no clue why she makes such a big deal out of stuff like that. Then again, I've always been pretty rebellious, good at not getting caught, and have a habit of questioning everything, so I wouldn't consider myself to be too sheltered

Yep this was me as a kid. I grew up with super strict Polish Catholic parents. I still can't curse around them or watch bad movies even as an adult. They don't smoke or drink and go to church several times a week and pray the rosary 3 times a day all of which I was expected to do also. I wasn't allowed to wear shorts. Now as an adult I still have trouble wearing summer clothes once it gets hot. There's so many other things.

Not really. lol I was a homeschooled Christian from K-12, and this representation is a bit on the extreme side. I knew other homeschoolers that weren't like this either. I always listened to 1950's-2000's music. I watched R rated movies, though tv censored. My mom would hide my eyes or turn the channel on some parts though obviously. But it wasn't like I wasn't allowed to watch or listen. I've always been a dancer, so I was exposed to a lot on that side too. My parents also cursed minus the F word, until I was 15, then they didn't care. I didn't say the F word until I was 23 though when I was required to for acting class. haha Still I would say that compared to most kids I was somewhat sheltered, but the right amount I would say.

I have to say, looking back on things, I wasn’t necessarily sheltered from everything. I knew what these things were, but I was also taught about the things I shouldn’t participate in. The peer pressure to swear definitely hit close to home, lol. I don’t care if other people want to swear, but you won’t hear anything from me.

For Halloween, I was “praise Him with timbrel and dancing.” My excuse to be a ballerina 😂.

All the comments expressing gratitude for this kind of upbringing are making me triply glad I became free of faith before high school.

My poor kid just realized at her friend's karaoke party that she "apparently only knew the kidz bop version of all the songs" and was pretty shocked to find out the real lyrics 🤣

I am turning 27 in a couple weeks, and I don’t think I know what a rusty trombone is 😂
