Yes I'm from the area. Can confirm that that scene was extremely similar.
The thing with dandy is like I dont think he was given those revealing scenes to glamorize him or sexualize him in any way. I think those scenes were a way to express how absolutely obsessed he was with himself and his own vanity/physical being. Narcissism is very dangerous.

it was also interesting to see how he believed him being physically fit and conventionally attractive made him perfect, desirable, and unstoppable but women only saw him as a whiny man-child. it's like the revealing scenes were how dandy saw himself, but the scenes where he throws tantrums were how others see him -- because no one in the show ever saw dandy in a desirable way
Tate’s school shooting references are definitely inspired by Columbine. From him asking if they believe in god to it literally being in a library.

I was pretty young when I first saw American Horror Story and I absolutely fell head over heels for Tate Langdon. My best friend had to continually remind me that he was a rapist and murderer. Looking back, I am still very attracted to Evan Peters, but it grosses me out how much they romanticized Tate. Thankfully my young mind never went as far as to romanticize real killers, but I totally see how the show could have facilitated that for other people, tween/teen girls especially.

This take is really tiring to me. The show is rated MA and is intended for adults. If teens were educated more on what healthy relationships look like then they wouldn’t need to derive that education from adult television. So I’m not necessarily blaming them, even though they’re crossing boundaries by consuming media that isn’t intended for them. It’s ok to criticize media, im just tired of this ‘think of the children’ attitude directed towards media they shouldn’t be watching in the first place.
@HereWeAre101

Candy P It may be rated MA but it was definitely marketed towards young girls. I was maybe 12, and all my friends were watching it. There were shirts with Tate’s face being sold at Hot Topic. And regardless, I don’t think that the portrayal of their relationship and romanticization of Tate was good for anyone, at any age. I’m sure young women older than me were influenced by it too. I get where you’re coming from, that things made for adults shouldn’t have to worry about the effects it would have on kids, but with this show in particular, it was heavily marketed to young people.

I totally agree. I believe that it is part of cinema to love and react/sympathize with the characters...similar to books. The art of creating characters is very complex and American Horror Story has a very interesting way of creating characters. However I believe that you can have a liking for a character without romanticizing actual killers. It’s a character...not real life. It’s all about perception and I believe it is not AHS’s fault for making a good character that people can connect to... So moral of the story: evan peters is god
Personally, I don't mind when they take portrayals of real life killers and victims "too far" in AHS, because I go in with the mindset that it's a fictional show and they're gonna use their artistic licence to hype up the gore. They're trying to make the characters as three dimensional as possible, so they don't end up boring and predictable to the viewer, while also keeping as true to the actual person as possible. All in all, I think they do a fairly good job at achieving this. However, if it was a show that was intended to be historically accurate then I would have a problem with how they portrayed them. Specifically how much they romanticise some of them.

Like she said, I have seen many people completely fall head over heels for Tate, to the point where they start glorifying his behavior and even starting to fall for actual killers. Many people have the same opinion as her, so it makes sense that she would touch up on this show and give her opinion about it, especially since this is what she always talks about. idk about y'all but i specifically remember them mentioning several times in the first season that the house essentially possesses people and makes them do terrible things. i believe it was also mentioned that prior to moving into the house tate was very quiet if a little troubled hence why the house had such an effect on him. That said I get what you're trying to say but at the end of the day AHS has always been gruesome and has always pushed the envelope in attempts to make it scary and keep people coming back.
Sorry but all characters in AHS are sexualised, so I’m never surprised if a killer is cause the point of the show is to shock people
i’m not trying to defend AHS’s depictions of serial killers, however i think when killers/violent criminals are sexualized or created to garner sympathy it can be, in part, an attempt to highlight how many of these monsters tend to exude a surface level charm in order to manipulate those around them. it’s a major characteristic of personality disorders such as narcissistic and antisocial personality disorder (which many killers have/are presumed to have had) to be charming and manipulative, so i don’t think of it so much as romanticism (though some depictions do romanticize killers) but more so an attempt to understand how victims get roped in or how family and friends don’t always see it coming.

I'm still in the middle of watching, so not sure if this is mentioned... I personally don't mind attractive actors for the role of murders, nor showing how sexy they are. My issues comes when it is combined with the glorification of killing in itself, which American Horror Story does extremely. I'm not sure what it is, but murder and killing are almost satisfying in the show (and I say that as a person who can't stand actual pain and hurt). I know it's something that a lot of horror and even action movies do, but I do see that AHS almost glorify killers, more than tell an horror story. I've seen this mentioned in a few video's about the 'male gaze', but in this context I'd say it's more the 'predator gaze' in which the watcher is more compelled to understand the killers point of view than it's victim due to writing, camera shots and directing.

I liked how they did too. I think it's okay if you like how they look, and are attracted to them, but know that the real people did bad things.
My only real issue with the portrayal of Elizabeth Short is how I feel like it'll make a lot of people try to focus on that idea, when there's a very strong theory that could very well be what happened. As for the Hotel dinner party, I don't see it as a "cute" thing, I found it more creepy and disturbing, and found the idea of March harnessing these people and fueling their darkness to be interesting, and kinda linking it to reality to make it feel a bit more creepy and realistic. That critics description of the Cult episode is frankly gross. I found that episode very interesting, but to call it a "blast from the past" is just...ew. With the Apocalypse episode with Tate, I get what they were trying to do. I think they were trying to deflect the fact that people loved such an evil character by trying to get rid of the evil. I don't think it was super well done, but they tried. (And people have been screaming since Murder House ended that Tate and Violet didn't end up together). In general, I actually kind of like when they make killers seem more human. But that's because personally I feel that it makes them even more creepy and scary. It reminds us that these awful killers aren't the boogeyman, they're real people who did awful things, which real people do. I feel like that's actually a theme AHS has held onto; All Monsters are Human.

thank you, you just put it in perspective for all of us. That was so well said omg
Actually, Tate's mom said in season one that the house got to him before he committed the murders. I also think Tate had mental health issues that were hinted at throughout the season. He would go to the psychiatrist and try to get help. Personally in universe, the house could have used him as a vessel to create the anti Crist. Though romanticizing him was in poor taste.
I'm very confused... Btw never take my comments as attacks, I genuinely agree with and am curious about some of your opinions but others I'm like.. What?? You don't like when they add fictional and human elements because it "romantisizes"(I don't even agree with that term cause I think if you're attracted to/fetishising killers you're just fucked, I don't think anything can MAKE you romantisize a killer) and it makes you forget the true terror of the crimes. However when they show real crime photos, depict the real gory killings etc. you say it's exploitation?? In my personal opinion society needs to see real portrayals of killers crimes. It shows people the gravity of reality and the horror that's in the real world. It also, as bad as it may sound, satisfies curiosity from a psychological perspective. Those of us intrigued by true crime again for psychology reasons, maybe would rather take that in in a visual way like fictional movies that pull you into the scene than just read about it in Wikipedia.

I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one a little off with some of the opinions stated. This sounds like a random thing to say, but with Evan peters playing Applewhite from the heavens gate cult, the cult itself is still active I do believe. About a year and bit ago now, myself and a couple friends were doing a radio show/series thing as part of an assignment for one of our classes. And each week we would talk about a different conspiracy theory or creepy event. One of the weeks, I had decided to look into the heavens gate cult. people are afraid of clowns because they’re basically human but distorted along with their makeup making it difficult to tell their emotions/expressions. overall cause a lot of anxiety & distress in some people. not sure if you wanted a direct answer but just in case! :p i agree though, i’d definitely like to see a video like that.
I just really hate how they portrayed Richard Ramirez both times. It’s just gross seeing him get to be all cool and funny and then murder people like he didn’t actually cause so many people so much pain.

The scene with all the serial killers as if it was a convention reminds me of a passage in the comic Sandman, I think 🤔

Eireen Wild am I the only one who found that scene very cringy? Especially when dahmer starts drilling a hole in the dudes head. I know he did that in real life but it was so weirdly portrayed in ahs
A lot of serial killers in real life, were very attractive, charming, pleasing to the eye. That’s how they were able to get away with their crimes and find their victims.

okay, so as soon as you got to Hotel and mentioned Mr. March, i was like uh oh. i had the biggest crush on that character and i did already know that it was based on H. H. Holmes as i had seen a documentary about his hotel before i saw Hotel from AHS and i instantly got excited that they were basing a season off of it, actually. and any character that Evan plays in which we can see his normal face (no SFX), i instantly crush on really because i adore Evan. with that said, any good looking serial killer portrayed in AHS (and elsewhere) does not and has not ever made me want to then start watching videos and looking at pictures of the real serial killer, and make me fall in love with them? i could not and i repeat, i could not give one single shit about the real serial killers. 🤷🏼♀️ i get that some people may not be able to separate a character in a show or movie from the real serial killer it was based on or downright portrayed as. but that is not my problem. i personally love when shows, especially AHS take inspiration from real life crime like this. i think it’s interesting and i actually do like that they have the guts to push it that far. this is of course only my opinion and again, i could not care less about the real serial killers, i just like that they’re a source of inspiration.

I think also one of the reasons that many people find it okay to romanticize Tate is because he was “possessed” by the house and never really remembered what he had done.
When it came to the killers none of them were attractive to me because of the whole killer aspect but I did get hyped whenever they were on screen because I was in suspense of who would die next

That doctor in Murder House was a full on Dr Hodell (who most people believe killed Elizabeth Short). I loved Kathy Bates in Coven! And Lobster Boy! OMGradyness!
They also don’t address the fact that they are based on real killers, and unless you already know about them, you wouldn’t know. It’s so weird because with Tate when it was revealed what happened and what All he did, it made me feel like icky. To me it was like they purposely romanticized him just to tear it down very quickly.
i'm wondering what you guys thought of tarantino's take on the manson murder in once upon a time in hollywood? do you think it's a good choice to create a fiction where the murder didn't take place at all?

I personally really enjoyed it. I think the point was to focus on who she was as a person, rather than just her murder. That's what Quentin said his intention was. Sharon Tate's sister really approved of her portrayal by Margot Robbie. Plus a sort of catharsis with her killers getting what they deserved honestly. I had no idea that it was going to go that way and I really liked it.

No gonna lie, I love dandy. He is a mood and a half when he’s all moody like “I’m bored mother!!!!”
The re-enactments/portrayals are actually my favorite things... I love the devils night episode, I don’t think it was meant to be ‘cute’ but it was interesting to see all their personalities. And I loved the cult leader re-enactments, I like to watch the story lines and the entire Jesus commentary was amazing. Also the Warhol death and the SCUM cult. P.S. Dandy was my favorite character, whenever I say that it jars people but not because he was hot or attractive, he had so much depth, he was a whiny baby but his character was so powerful at the same time.
I'd love to know if you've watched Mindhunter and what your thoughts on those portrayals are! I'm a forensic psychology student so I find it interesting to watch shows/movies like that and see what they get right and what is wrong.
Sarah: apocalypse doesn't have any killers... Also Sarah: WELL.....
Please do the video on mental health in AHS
This is the thing I didn't know I needed in my life.
Honestly I absolutely loved the idea of Devil's Night and all the serial killers meeting together. Especially how they portrayed Ramirez and they even included the detail of him climbing into the hotel room through the window, as he would often do
i felt “i’m an only child so im used to being alone” on another level
I really don’t see it as problematic how they portray real life killers. It’s a fictional show that simply draws inspiration from real life events that are actually scary. And I also imagine watching the show without the romanticism and addition of fictional aspects would not be nearly as interesting...
I was too young, but my family owned many bars in our lifetimes and they remember David Koresh playing in a small metal band peddling small gigs here and there. They were shocked to see what he had done in his last years. "He was such a nice young man when he played." Crazy. Crazy. Crazy.
I think in either Hotel (might have been Freak show, it's been a while!) They bring up/hint at The Chicken Coop Murders!
i'd love to see even more videos of your take on different topics in ahs, like the mental illness one you mentioned!
I would love to hear your opinions about Ryan Murphy's other show American Crime Story. There's currently 2 seasons, and I personally thought they were done really well.

...My school actually did a play ABOUT the Cecil hotel, specifically the deaths that occurred there- it was a ‘the butler (concierge) did it kind of thing’.
i gotta say, i was pretty shocked with how they handled richard ramieraz in 1984
Out of all the seasons I've seen Coven is (and I'm convinced will stay as) my favourite season by far. The portrayal of the axeman of New Orleans is in my opinion one of the better portrayals of actual serial killers that are in AHS. Obviously the murders happened very long ago but I also think that fictionalizing an unsolved mystery makes a lot more sense than doing that with actual solved cases. In regards to unsolved cases we don't really have much information on the killer which makes it almost impossible to twist or ignore actual details. I guess i feel like the axeman contributes much less to the phenomenon of pop culture fictionalizing actual people and that way twisting the way we see them. It feels more in the vain of situations or characters inspired by real life events rather than an actual portrayal of those events. In this case the character of the axeman is fully a fictional character attached to real life events rather than a real life person turned into a semi fictionalized version of themselves. The latter i feel is much more harmful as it clearly seems to affect the way people view these people and horrific events that took place. However I do not think the portrayal of the Axeman is flawless or entirely unproblematic. The actual events surrounding the Axeman were obviously very tragic and horrific and based on the letters from the alleged Axeman he wanted to be seen as an evil entity and make himself seem like a larger than life legend which in effect is sort of what AHS does with him in the show by having him be a cool ghost guy who is eventually tamed by Jessica Lang's character. Coven in general is in some regards a bit dicey season and includes a lot of unsavory stuff (I mean I haven't even talked about LaLaurie) and a lot of the general unpleasantness that all the AHS seasons tend to have. However i just felt like collecting my thoughts about this particular character and why I feel differently about his portrayal than for example Ramirez in the newest season.
You forgot how they tried to humanize Madame Lalaurie and create empathy with her heart to hearts she had with Queenie.

thank uu! ive been loving ahs 🥳❤️
I understand what you’re getting at, but also I don’t think that just because a character is attractive or has a romantic subplot or something is not necessarily glorifying anything. Not all killers were “ugly” or loners or seen as undesirable (before they were found to be killers.) I think it shows them as human beings, as complex characters therefore making them more realistic than if they were seen as ugly, no friends, etc.
I think one thing AHS 1984 did a good job on was when the police caught Ramirez, it didn't make you feel bad for him and it was very accurate to his real life capture. It's probably the only good thing they did with him in that season. I personally would disagree with part of what you said, giving him personality traits makes ME think of him more as a real person than a character, especially the foot fetish thing because that reminds me how gross he is.

AHS also features numerous historical figures in their own warped way. One of these in Apocalypse was Church of Satan founder Anton LaVey. Now obviously because the series is fiction and very over the top, and that season had a big Satanism motif, they feature LaVey and claim he faked his own death. My issue is they portray LaVey in this season as a Hollywood movie version of a satanist. He sacrifices virgins, prays to a literal devil, worships the Antichrist, etc. I’m not a practitioner of LaVeyan Satanism, nor do I think LaVey is above scrutiny (his own daughter considers him more of a performer and con artist and his claims about his biographer are disputable), but I do find the subject fascinating and the show has now contributed to a massive public ignorance about LaVeyan-style Satanism. LaVeyan Satanist are not a cult. They do not murder people. They do not worship a literal Devil (to them, God and the devil are just concepts that represent human wants and desires). They do not put coded messages in mainstream media (something Apocalypse plays for tongue in cheek laughs but something that an alarming number of people actually believe). It’s more of an edgy parody of organized religion than it is an actual belief system. It’s more like a personal philosophy. It’s basically punk rock-spitting in the face of tradition and embracing the most controversial label possible to stir up conversation. And there are no doubt people who will watch this show, not do their research, and have that image of Satanism as a legitimate murder cult stuck in their heads. Again, not a Satanist. But I don’t like ignorance, or a popular piece of media misrepresenting a group of people for the sake of entertainment.
I personally don't mind the way AHS portrays serial killers because to me it's not the characters themselves that people are attracted to, it's the actors. For example, if Richard Ramirez was portrayed by Kane Hodder or Rob Zombie even with them giving him a whole storyline and a love-interest, I think most people would not be attracted to him. So in my opinion, the actors attractiveness are why viewers are drawn into these characters and then they start to rationalize their crimes since they now will view the actual killer as the actor that portrays them and not the real person that they were. Great video as always Sarah! I love to hear your thoughts on topics even if not everyone in the comments will agree with you.
You’re a godsend !! Making my social isolation so much better
Personally I like how they portrayed the killers. And how everything got together in the seasons. I think the show did actually very well

I thought the thing with murder house from the beginning was that the house made people who lived in it do evil things , hence Tate’s shooting!
What about the cult portrayal of the zodiac killer? That felt like a semi-big story line in the background of cult and they fictionalized someone we dont know the identity of
youre such a great youtuber :) thank you for the great videos
i love that you welcome disagreements instead of seeing them as direct attacks!! it’s very refreshing because everyone is entitled to their own opinion and you see it for what it is instead of hate!! i love your videos and i agree with you wholeheartedly ♥️
As someone who wanted to get into AHS but never had the attention span, learning that Richard Ramirez had a thing for feet and it was Portrayed was. A Moment.
I want to watch this but I’m really annoyed by how much she’s saying it’s romaticized. It’s not AHS, it’s the teens romanticizing it and people not being able to separate fiction from reality. And AHS is famously known for crossing lines. So if you’re not a fan of lines being crossed, it’s not the show for you.
