About Michelle in the Meadow
I am a suburban gardener located in zone 9A in Northeast Florida. I started growing in this suburban lot in 2019 and have expanded the garden yearly. In 2020 I started making Facebook Videos about the garden, and in 2022 created this KZread channel. I enjoy making content about my garden, what I’m growing and learning, and from time to time, the general vlog, too.
About our Growing Season & Gardens
We have a 300+ days between frost dates and can pretty much garden yearround. We are currently growing in many raised garden beds of various sizes. We grow along both sides of the house, in grow bags, in the ground, in Greenstalk vertical planters, and pots on the patio.

I love that you're giving updates as time passes, to let us know how your garden beds are performing! Love the very fair assessments you provide, with pluses and negatives for each type of raised bed.

I'm not going to last much longer but I bought 4 of the VIGO beds this morning. This is my legacy to my family . I have done everything I could possibly think of to prepare for the future survival of my family. This is one of my final gifts to them and hopefully this will provide them with a way to grow food when food becomes scarce. This in combination with an orchard and other food trees and bushes should provide them with year round food.

I bought 25 of these 2x2x8 beds from Houston and assembled them by myself. The ground nut and bolt were also an issue for me. But a couple of 4x4 pieces of wood lifted them off the ground. The units are remarkedly lightweight and easy for a 115# 75-year-old woman to move around by stepping inside and lifting using the braces. They are very sturdy as we experienced high winds before I was able to fill or secure them, which rolled them around. (None went air born.) I saw no damage or dents of consequence. I believe the braces kept them in shape with no twisting. They sat in the garden all winter through rain and freezing with no sign of rusting. I haven't added the rubber edging yet. Will take a wait-and-see attitude after they are in their permanent location in the garden. So far...I would recommend.

I watched your Birdie vs Vego bed comparison. I watch Mark at Self Sufficient Me, and that is where I first learned about these beds. I’m so glad you did honest reviews, because I couldn’t find unbiased opinions either from anyone in USA. Thank you for your time. I just ordered two tall Birdies. I can’t wait to set them up.

I’m in Jax, FL and as a relatively new gardener VERY MUCH appreciate how thorough you are in your assessments on climate, experience, cost, etc. Also, as a fan of my husband’s “dad” jokes I LOLed at your seedy-weedy joke. Thank you for your enjoyable review!!

Slice a piece of hose pipe and put it on top of the edging that is touching the cattle panel.

Very thorough review update. I cant believe its been 150 days! You and I both got them all done up same time. I now have 5 Vego and 4 Birdies. I will have to admit they are similar but configuration is what had me purchase the ones I did. For future beds (may get a few more) I will be going with Birdies. Kevin's team are just "on it" with customer service and that is super important to me when you run into issues. I have been considering getting the Vego modular cover system for spring. I had way too many pests this season. I would get it now but our winds will soon be starting for months and Im afraid it might rip in the wind. Look forward to your review if you decide to get it. I dont think anyone has gotten it or reviewed it. Ive searched and searched but have come up with nothing.

My family still lives in NE Florida, but I moved to Wyoming, where I live in the high desert at 4,500 feet. Gardening has been a challenge, and I finally got a greenhouse last year. The wind is a serious consideration, with a 30 mph wind considered a gentle summer breeze. After watching your videos, I'm seriously considering getting a metal raised bed. It would hold up to the weather here. Thanks for answering viewers' questions, which answered questions that I had too.

the problem with using wood mulch is at the start the wood will suck up nitrogen , but it will release it later when it has broken down .
