The way James Gunn turned the ongoing joke about Rocket thinking that raccoon is just an offensive word into him proudly saying "The name is Rocket. Rocket Raccoon" has to be one of the most satisfying moments in the MCU for me.

One thing I love about Nebula in Guardians 3 is how much she cares about Rocket. They were the only 2 Guardians left after the snap so it makes sense why they care so much about each other. I also liked that the movie didn’t feel the need to tell you that. If you saw Endgame, you already know and if you didn’t (for some reason), it doesn’t matter because you can feel it

I personally thought Nebula was quite annoying in vol.1&2 but after the snap she did a U-turn on me and is now one of my favorites. Probably the best character arc in the MCU.

So here’s my defense of Peter Quill: 1. As you said, much of Peter and Gamoras relationship is implied, but based on what he says in GOTG 3, it seems like she was the love of his life. They had a 4 year offscreen relationship, there was definitely a deep connection between them. 2. Peter watched his mom die in the hospital of brain cancer when he was 8, and immediately after was abducted by aliens. Also, as you said, Yondu wasn’t a great dad. So, Quill is certainly not the most emotionally mature guy in the universe.

Also, what did Peter do to his dad the MOMENT he realized his dad killed his mom? He blasted him to hell. The exact same thing he did to thanos. He has a history of reacting to pain and loss this way, and I feel like a lot of people overlook that.

I personally LOVE that arc in Infinity War when he smashes Thanos against the head after he reveals he killed Gamora. It’s PERFECT for his arc, and very relatable.

Yes! He deserves even more love! He has a pleasant personality, naive, childish but incredibly kind and empathic (like literally his first line in vol1). And at vol3 he is just forced to grow up fast through depression and alcoholism. All in his character isn't causeless appear from nothing.

I’d have Starlord at 1 or 2. I think he is meant to be a flawed character. In his world of aliens and gods, he is just a human with very human flaws.

26:50 Nebula is also the first one to turn and follow Rocket in the epic slow walk scene after he says "I'm done running." Very intentional. A few other small things like Rocket calling her "Nebs" at some point were nice acknowledgements of how much they worked together during the blip. I really like how they never explicitly said "hey remember when it was only us for 5 years?" but they communicate it through two characters who were never open about history/relationships with little observations like that.

And when Gamora lashes out at Starlord, she says she has a bunch of upgrades because of Rocket. It's really subtle but it hits.

I think the moment where groot talks, he isnt actually talking but its a nod to the audience saying "now you understand me too"

Star Lord is just a character with so much heart, while his ending feels like the logical step for his trilogy it doesn’t feel like the ending for his character’s complete journey. Similar to cap after civil war. I’m really interested to see where they take him now

The recontextualization of Drax caught me off guard. That he was always a dad and in the first film he was on a revenge trip. And that the Drax we see in Volumes 2 & 3 and the holiday special is closer to who he actually was. It flabbergasted me. And now I love Drax more than I gave him credit for

The whole team have their quirks and characteristics that make them all so loveable and arcs that make them so compelling and interesting. In many ways they remind me of the Bebop crew from Cowboy Bebop. I’m not sure how I’d rank them all, but I know my top 2 would be Rocket and Star Lord. Rocket for his tragic backstory and moments in which he has shown how hurt he has been, but also for his funny banter and personality 😂 My favorite is Star Lord tho. In a lot of ways, he reminds me of one of my favorite characters of all time: Simon the digger from Gurren Lagann. This is a character who lost his mom, had a horrible father, lost his caring blue daddy, and his lover (the og). Yet he gets back up, leads his team, and does what needs to be done. In the end he passes on the leadership of the guardians making way for a new generation and stepping down from something that he no longer needs to be a part of. Maybe he didn’t get the ending he or us wanted for him, but it doesn’t matter. He’s fine with it, and we should be too. Like Simon, and his drill, he keeps digging. Plus he’s got exquisite taste in music 👌

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is all about Yondu in my opinion and I love his character so much. He’s funny, he’s charismatic, and the ark he goes down is so interesting to see play out. One of the best characters and one of my favorites of the MCU. Star Lord and Drax are still my favorite guardians though, I love their individual arks and the moments they bring that always make me laugh and smile.

Drax was so good in this movie, literally balled my eyes out at the end of vol 3. How can a guy dancing around a bunch of kids be so emotional?

Nebulas character arc was the second most emotional for me ! When she heard rockets voice she literally practically cried and it made me cry it was such a full circle moment for her and i love the vision and direction they took with her !

The main reason that Peter was so hot headed in infinity war was that thanos had killed gamora and it was implied that he very much truly loved her so he may not have been the most emotionally stable at the time because thanos killed his girlfriend so he might ultimately hate thanos

My top 2 favourite Guardians are also my top 2 favourite MCU characters: Rocket and Nebula. I loved Rocket for his personality and his hinted backstory before seeing Vol. 3, but Vol. 3 truly made me love him even more. To fully understand all that he went through makes him all the more tragic yet heroic and to see him finally embrace how he's a raccoon was so satisfying and cathartic. Nebula was one of my favourites even since seeing Vol. 2 and Endgame was what made her my second favourite MCU character, especially the opening with her and Tony out in space. Then Vol. 3 just made me love her even more, especially with how she decides to be a parental figure to all those children as a way to move past what she endured with Thanos. James Gunn is such a genius with these characters. I'm honestly jealous of him.

Id like to add about Rocket and that scene on the ship at the end. Twice in his life he was in the middle of escaping when the high evolutionary comes to pick a fight, the first time Rocket is trying to save everyone and at the end, as a result of his rage in the fight, hes left only able to save himself. The second time, Rocket is trying to get away with just the racoons, hes only trying to save himself, until The Hi Evo comes in and picks a fight, this time however rocket controls his rage and goes back to save everything. I got two more things I wanna add to this conversation, one I think its cool that Rocket also managed to invent better gravity control technology than the high evo and two if you go back and watch GotG V1 pay attention to how Rocket reacts when Ronan kills Groot.

Star Lord, I have to disagree, Gunn knew what he wanted to do with him in the first movie, set up the father storyline, and then needed to course correct after infinity war had him lose gamora and attack thanos. His characterization and decision in infinity war were in character in my opinion, because he did the same thing to ego. The only thing I agree with is the lackluster reveal of mantis being his sister, because it takes away from this being a group of random, broken people, finding comfort in family in one another. Having them be actual family takes away from that

Groot and yondu over star lord is crazy. Honestly either of those over mantis and gamora is odd to me as well. Gamora is a different character after infinity war, so I understand her not being top 5, but at least 6 or 7 for og gamora. And mantis doesn’t have as much of an arc as some of the top characters here, but the energy she brought to the holiday special and vol. 3 makes her top 5 for me for sure. She, as well as nebula, hold so many of the scenes together in vol. 3 that I couldn’t understand putting her as low as she is on this list. Drax is an odd one to rank, because there were times he was only there as a tool for comedy…but he also had a great arc, he’s easily the funniest, and his story in vol. 3 ends in such an amazing and emotional spot that makes me cry tears of joy each time. Rocket, nebula, drax, star-lord, groot, mantis, gamora, kraglin, cosmo. All characters from vol. 3. And taking into account their entire journeys. This is my favorite mcu movie, and one of my favorite movies period. And I love the amount of shine that each character gets. Above all else, that’s what really put it over as the best for me. Outstanding.

Rocket has always been my favorite, and not just among the Guardians. First time I saw the first film, the face he made when he said, "What's a raccoon?" caught my HELLA attention. However, it was when he pulled his gun on Drax in the bar on Knowhere, crying about his tribulations, that I fell in love with the guy. Also, he didn't steal batteries because he was dumb. He stole them because he's a self-destructive criminal. Damn, I'm gonna miss the character.

Some of the stuff that reads even deeper with Rocket after GOTG3: 1) In the first movie, he loses his closest friend, Groot. 2) In Volume 2, Peter comments on how he's just purposely being a jerk. Yondu even profiles this and now you understand that he really his trying to push people away, because he's afraid he'll get them killed, like the others before. 3) He bonds with Yondu and than can't let him go when told to leave without him. Then when Gamora is about to go to try and save Peter as well, Rocket knocks her out; Knowing that he's losing Yondu, anticipating that Yondu might not be able to save Peter so he could die too, and say to her "I can only afford to lose one friend today." He can't handle the idea of the loses piling up. He can't stand losing more people he cares about. 4) In Infinity War, he builds that bond with Thor after seeing all that he has lost and knows what he's going through. He councils him and when Thor says "If I'm wrong, what more could I possibly lose?" and Rocket's response of "Me personally, I could lose a lot." Because Thor is on a quest to kill Thanos, but more focused on Vengeance. So when he slips up and doesn't make the kill shot, he realizes that he forgot that there were other people who were on the line or could lose folks, including Rocket. And then Rocket loses Groot for the 2nd Time! 5) In ENDGAME, he learns he's lost so many others, so now his closest bond is Nebula. When Tony asks what's up with Thor, Rocket's response of "He thinks he failed but then there's a lot of that going around, isn't there." can be viewed in a whole new light with his backstory. He's devastated when he sees the stones gone because it means they can't bring everyone back. Now you see him snap and Slap Thor and go off on him saying "You think you're the only one who lost someone!?" Then when everyone comes back, and then Thanos has his ship fire on everyone, you see him throw himself over Groot like "NO!!! I'M NOT LOSING YOU A THIRD TIME!!!!" You Still Wonder What's With His Obsession With Limbs & Eyes And All That. You Could Think Back To How The High Evolutionary Added Parts To His Friends, But Then That Shouldn't Have A Humorous Effect On Rocket. Who Knows. Still, An ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC ARC FOR HIM!

Rocket was my favourite Guardian since he was introduced in the first film. He's in my Top 5 MCU characters of all time

It's either he was too drunk to grab them at the start, or Gunn wanted to "retcon" IW/EG because his mask was destroyed in Vol. 2 to maintain continuity.

I loved that past timeline Gamora didn't become Peter's love by movie's end. It would've been so predictable & would've totally made Gamora's death at the hands of Thanos totally meaningless having wrote themselves out of that impactful moment by having her pickup where old Gamora left off. I do like by movie's end she started to soften to the Guardians to the point where she now understands Groot but still does her own thing as a Ravager

This video made me greater appreciate the character conclusion in GOTG Vol. 3. I still would’ve done Star-Lord’s differently. I wanted him to hold his Grandpa’s hand on his death bed (what he didn’t do with his mother) then be introduced to his family.

I still dont understand why evryone craps on StarLord for Infinity War. I can honestly say, I would probably have behaved the same way if I literally just found out the a-hole in front of me just killed one of my loved ones for his "cause". Logic goes right out the window at that point. It was the most human thing for him to react that way.

i really dislike how mantis takes away drax's memory of that situation. drax being hurt by that is how he could change, taking the pain away from that moment guaruntees in the next situation hes going to make the same mistake. its annoying that they get mad at him for his constant mistakes and then she does that which inhibits him from growing

I think ur too logical sometimes with your rankings... For example with Star Lord everything u said is correct but still I would put him higher just because he's the heart of the guardians, he's funny, kind-hearted, and has some of the best scenes in the franchise. I get that nebulas arc for example is better written but is she really a character we care about more than Star Lord ? I think most people would say no. Its not a bad ranking and its yours but idk maybe its not all about how perfectly written they are sometimes and just about how they make the audience feel

I can’t say I agree with most of your placements… However I definitely agree with Rocket being the best! First of all, I would have ranked Peter much higher. I also disagree with your thoughts on his actions in Infinity War. He’s half human and he let his emotions get the better of him… I would have ranked Baby Groot and both versions of Gamora considerably higher, especially original Gamora. I would have also ranked Yondu a bit lower, and especially Kraglin too.

Quill has to be at the very least top 3. He is the star of the franchise, a huge reason why it’s so popular

I completely disagree about Starlord's character taking a hit in Infinity War. He reacted the EXACT same way in Volume 2 when he finds out that Ego killed his mom. Since when are people expected to be level headed when confronting the murderer of the love of their life? I find it perfectly in character for Starlord to lash out on Thanos in that moment, it makes way more sense than if he would've been level headed

Honestly, researching the Guardians in the MCU online, I didn't even remember who Blurp or Phyla were, due to the fact that they don't even say their names and they do so little. I would include Yondu, of course, and it's tricky to say whether I should include Gamora 2 in it. But of course it's true that there are 2 Gamoras, technically.

And now I ask the question I’ve been asking for 5 years now. Where the hell was Kraglin in Infinity War and Endgame?

Rocket has always been my #1 since the first movie 🤟 I’ve always just loved him so much and gotg 3 made me love him even more
