    It's fucking wild that Jokic, of all people, gets this conversation going. Embiid and Luka and Durant do this night after night after night and nobody bats an eye. Jokic, the guy who plays down low with the ball more than anyone, the guy whose arms are covered in scars from plays that didn't draw a whistle, gets superstar calls for ONE GAME and everyone loses their minds. Jokic is first in the league, by far, in touches. He's first in the league, by far, in post ups, post up attempts, and post up makes. Jokic is 16th in free throws per game. Jokic is not the problem here.

The calls that Steph used to get was on all the off-ball grabbing and bumping. From late 2018 onwards, it seems that this is now allowed....as is hand-checking. It's a shame as I consider that to be the fugly part of the game. You are right about Embiid flopping "much more" - he's doing it ALL THE TIME. Let's look at this - Embiid has 12 FT attempts on avg... Giannis has 19... (fouls he's getting are just ridiculous). Jokic has 6. Kerr really picked a wrong guy and a wrong time to cry. I'm all for rules that allow more contact and more physical game. I'd love that. But, taking ONE GAME (first, maybe last) when Jokic actually had a "fair whistle" (based on current NBA rules and practice) - is just so strange and laughable. Here's the breakdown of your examples: play by play: 1 - clear elbow shove by the defender. 100% foul. 2 - looney does a "hip bump" at the time Jokic takes off. 100% foul. 3 - clear bump, no matter if a late call. 100% foul 4 - clear foul, Andrew is reaching and holding his arm. 100% foul. 5 - moving bump from cumminga. 100% foul. 6 - arm over the shoulder, pressing down. 100% foul. 7 - steph's push - not really a foul. Jokic exaggerated. 8 - looney holding. 100% foul. 9 - wiggins hitting the arm. 100% foul. Good video though. I agree with what you've said at the end.

    Whether he was actually fouled or not shouldn't be in question. He still flops and cries to the refs all the time. He sold calls in this game. There was numerous examples in this video alone where it's a no call in other games. Flying back 10 feet from Curry using his off arm to create space is flopping. It's a no call if the nuggets do it to the warriors. He doesn't get those calls all the time because officials allow some physical play when you're on a team they aren't trying to bury. You play the warriors, you get those calls. Then you can go and play "physical defense" on the other end and they don't blow the whistle consistently. I can just tell by the way you worded your comment that you're a nuggets fan or a Jokic fan, or just a warriors hater. You spelling kuminga wrong on purpose was the biggest tell. Yes, they're fouls. Refs just let a ton of contact go all the time because it's minor. If they wanted they could blow the whistle on every possession of the game. They could just take defense out completely. That's what they already do to the warriors. They can't defend the same way they're being defended. It's been like this since 2022 when they had to beat the other teams and the refs most nights on their way to a championship.

    Curry's argument is that it's okay to call touch fouls but also call them on the other team as well. The Warriors are a small team and can’t match up with the Nuggets size-wise. So when you put a smaller guy on Jokic and Gordon the refs have to make a decision. Do you let a smaller guy foul the bigger guy because it has less impact, or do you call it like they are both 300 lbs. Sometimes it favors the smaller team and they get away with tons more, other times, like this game, it doesn’t. Kerr was positioning for the next game, he knows he’s outmatched down low vs. bigger teams and cannot win if the game is called this way.

    Ok im gonna sum this debate up for people not quite understanding. Elite scorers, for the past three decades at least, not only try making buckets, but they also try to "draw a foul". This means quite simply: framing your defender to look as if he's committing a foul as you shoot the ball. One would assume that's a very cheezy and pathetic play style, and you're correct, but check this out... it's been not only allowed by refs and league administrators for decades, but also encouraged. Let me give an example. Commonly you will hear an announcer or talking head say something like this, "PLAYER is scoring more this season from the mid-range, but he's not getting to the free throw line on average with the league's top scorers". It is very much a stat in itself that portrays "a good player" or "an elite shooter" by how frequently they get the +1 by "drawing the foul". When you see scorers in the league high-fiving their teammates after a fouled shot that gets them an extra shot at the line, they're not celebrating the basket, they're celebrating the "flop," as some might call it, that the players view as a deserved extra point due to putting their defender in a vulnerable position which enabled them to frame a foul during their shot. The defender has no choice but to view the foul as a mistake he made while defending, such as falling for a pump fake and falling into the shooter. This is why players haven't spoken against the whole messed up system because it's viewed as a small game within the larger game that professionals consider challenging play - both for the defender and the shooter, considering that scoring a framed flop shot is actually pretty difficult, and because defenders wouldn't fall for being foul-framed if they practiced avoiding it. And so that's where today's league stands. MANY elite players of the past, including Jordan, Kobe, and Shaq participated in this type of game play. You can hear charles barkley and magic johnson complaining about it in The Last Dance documentary, specifically Jordan's ability to draw non-stop fouls. Watch when Jokic does it... He does it many ways, but as an easy example you'll see him around the free throw line facing the basket and he begins driving and bullying his defender towards the basket. He will chest bump his defender to push the contest closer and closer to the basket. His defender needs to chest bump in return, at the same time, or at least lean his body weight into Jokic to counter the drive. Here's where Jokic tricks the defender. On the last chest bump, Jokic instead "gathers the ball" to attempt a shot. His defender doesn't notice right away, and mistakingly chest bumps Jokic as Jokic is shooting the ball. Foul called. That's the crux of it, that elite scorers are very good at concealing their moves, and so if you want to defend them without causing a foul, you have to take a more cerebral approach that is less physical. Even if you stand still with arms in the air, Jokic will gather to shoot and bump into you as he shoots to "use you" for extra points. So as a defender, being very physically aggressive is a problem, and standing still doing absolutely nothing is also a problem. You've got to be somewhere in between. And if a defender practices enough, not only can he quit allowing himself to get framed for fouls, but he can fake out the shooter who's trying to fake him out. This game within the game has gone on for a very long time and when I first started watching basketball a lot, I didn't understand it either. BUT, now with Jokic appropriately being very good at it, it's become a problem. Wasn't a problem when Jordan, Kobe, Iverson, etc. did it, isn't a problem now when SGA, Tatum, Durant, Harden, Embiid and Butler do it, but it's a national crises that Jokic does it. 👏 Typical complete bullshit as usual. Im sure Jokic would be happy to quit doing it if the league banned the whole messed up system of it, but I don't think the league will ban it until it's more inconvenient for more elite players, like if Jokic gets better at it while they stay the same... LOOKING AT THIS VIDEO, our narrator is picking out plays where a foul is more warranted than other plays. That designation of a degree of fouling isn't significant beyond its ability to make it easier for a referee to see it. In some plays observed in this vid, it's shown that the defender barely bumped or barely touched Jokic during the shot. That degree of physicality only matters prior to Jokic's shot attempt, not during. Once Jokic "gathers" for his shot, any subsequent contact regardless of how hard, is considered a foul, EXCEPT for rare situations with very light chest to chest contact. With the defender not paying enough attention to Jokic's hands for identifying his "gather" to shoot, they'll foul him every time unless they defend in a way that doesn't make any contact even before the "gather." In every situation highlighted in this video, you can see exactly when Jokic gathers and how he does it in an especially deceptive way. He "catches" his defender not paying enough attention and frames the foul. I THINK it's a perfect example of what happens when a new rule is needed, but ignored for years. Framing your defender by shooting through them and intentionally making contact seems like it should be called an offensive foul if anything. I think it doesn't make a player more elite because it's not a basketball skill. Using your defender to intentionally make an interfered-with shot is not a basketball skill. But when the NBA ignores the shit for decades, it becomes a necessary skill that no one wants to have.

    This game was atrocious. Jokic isn't really a "flopper" but he saw early that the refs were going to give him everything and he just played it up. What makes the game almost unwatchable today though is the fact that on defense you apparently can't even stand your ground or put a body on a guy backing you down or running into you, but an offensive player is allowed to just walk into you on a dribble handoff. Honestly, watch Denver and how they run most of their half-court sets. Its a problem with every team in the league, but they are BY FAR the worst. An example of one of their bread and butter plays? Have the wing set a pin down screen, jokic moves to top of the key to receive a pass, then hands the ball off to the cutting guard and literally just rolls THROUGH both the guy who swapped onto him ands the guard's defender. This creates a cutting or popping wing with a mismatch, a moving genius in jokic towards the hoop, and a gap on the ball handling guard who can shoot or now pass to a rolling Jokic as the defender on the guard tries to recover from being moving screened for 6 feet. THEY RUN THIS ACTION DOZENS OF TIMES A GAME! IT IS TEXTBOOK ILLEGAL SCREENS! So, how is it that they can do that, but if you even nudge a guy in the back when he's under the basket it's a foul? If you are gonna let the guys be physical, cool - but you can't only call it one way! Someone below made a great comment too, the refs and media just DECIDE some teams are better at , so that means they are allowed to hack the hell out of people, but other teams can't even touch someone without a whistle. How is it that you can have Curry come around a legal screen with a guy's arm literally IN HIS JERSEY with no call, but that other teams can have players just run over guys on the way the the rim like its the NFL, yet if anyone touches them it's a foul? The game is unwatchable today. Honestly, I think Jokic is the best player in the world atm, he doesn't even need the help.. but it really diminishes his greatness when you see stuff like this :(

    There were 2 or 3 times where Jokic shot free throws that weren’t even shooting fouls. He was facing away from the basket around the free throw line area and got fouled, threw the ball up in the air in like a semi-hook shot after the contact, and the officials put him on the free throw line. You could see Kerr shouting “He wasn’t even shooting!”

    Refs control the game, when a lead is too big, foul calls are made to slow down the game and give the losing team a chance to get back by controlling the tempo. Once the momentum shifts they know slow down the foul calls. Refs need to be held accountable but they’re not. Hire international refs, they don’t try to control the game they let the players dictate dominance.

  • @Leonardo-Lenguaje
    @Leonardo-Lenguaje5 ай бұрын

    Thanks for slowing these clips down and compiling them. Now that I'm seeing it slower, if you look at Jokic's shot form, he initiates the contact, then flails away as he shoots to sell the foul. That being said, he does get fouled, grabbed up, etc. at times, but I'd argue that as a defender, if I see a guy constantly flopping on me, I'd eventually start making sure I get my money's worth on those fouls and start actually hitting the guy, so flopping isn't helping anyone really. So in a sense, Jokic may potentially be bringing some of the scratches/cuts on himself since he's genuinely a frustrating guy to play against. The same thing happened with Harden--you can't have a guy that's MVP-caliber also playing cheap, b/c it breaks the game: 1. MVP caliber player likely to get a better whistle (though Jokic, being in a small market doesn't always get the greatest whistle) 2. MVP caliber player has more skills and more touches than the average rotation player, so it amplifies the issue 3. MVP caliber player is already capable of putting up good stats without the janky play I'd be curious to see the ppg numbers for players w/ fouls deducted. For me, that's a better indicator of skill combined with execution. For instance, do people remember the many games where Curry dropped prolific numbers on the court without going to the line more than a time or two? I think Curry's many years of fleecing the refs has made them eternally swallow their whistle for him now, b/c at times he gets whistles as bad as what rookie's would get. I remember one game recently (vs Boston) that was so bad that the refs accidentally got Steph up to 5 fouls with like 8 minutes still left in the game. So they said "oh shit... we can't give him one more" since like half of them were bad calls anyway--so they let Curry get away with like 2 ACTUAL fouls near the end of the game, both of which would have swayed the game and should have been called. The issues really are these: 1. The referees need to blow the whistle less. They need to figure out how to get there. I think the best way to do it would be to not call these dumb fouls where the player essentially just runs to a spot and just BARELY beats the defender to the spot and bumps into them. I personally consider this playing out of control, and ideally they're not supposed to call a foul on the defensive player when the offense isn't in control of the ball and it's a 50-50 scenario. They also need to call less of these fouls that happen when the offensive player and defensive player are essentially fighting to get the ball. At speed, how do you even tell who made an illegal move and when? It's insane to actually think you can make a consistent call at speed in those cases. 2. Players initiating contact should not be awarded fouls. It should just be a play-on. I.e., if I clearly lift my hands into the defense's outstretched hands, it should just be a play on. Why are we actively hindering the defense's ability to play defense when the game is already overly skewed towards offsense. If a player drives into another player's outstretched hands, that was their choice and they shouldn't be rewarded just b/c the player happened to initiate a shot this way. Joel Embid is a major offender here. 3. Why be so inconsistent with how fouls on screens are called? Every one is moving their screens all the time, but the league just doesn't know what to do with how to call them. Just make it clear that you need to (1) have your hands in and (2) both feet must be planted and (3) cannot move body to widen base. All of this "changing the angle of the screen" stuff is bs IMO, b/c it's usually just a literal moving screen. It honestly might be simpler if teams just left moving screens rock at this point b/c they're doing them all the time anyway... just find consistency and clarity with the rules. 4. Get "player profile" out of calls. This is how refs end up tacking fouls onto rookies that they woudln't have called on stars or how stars who they accidentally called too many fouls on end up getting to get away with murder in the 4th quarter. Or how star players genuinely get away with BS that should get called. 5. Refs need to stop trying to balance out bad calls--just get the calls right in the first place or don't make a call. As all fans who've watched a while know, once the refs made a clearly bad call on a star, they're going to give that one back on the other end ASAP to some irrelevant player. It's like clockwork. If you're not sure, just don't make the call... like damn. Refs need to have one challenge a game themselves to take back 1 or 2 bad calls, lol.

    Excellent points! Couldn't agree more. The NBA is becoming like NFL. There is a whistle and a premature game stop nearly every play, real action in the paint and at the rim has been exchanged for a free throw competition, players can damn near not make eye contact anymore before it will be a foul, then add the fact that the game has become a business like never before where players like Zion and Tatum seem fine with being the star of the night or Poole, seeming totally fine with one good play every other game even though his team loses all games, because there isn't this demonic desire to overcome struggles anymore when they are already spoiled with so much they never feel real hunger or desire but can be on a superstar max contract and just lean back and cash millions even when they don't play... and the result is it kills the momentum. There is also nearly no defense left because who wants to go and contest a dunk when they will most likely just send the offensive player to the line for 2-3 shots or an and 1 as well as get in foul trouble quickly, that on top of winding up on the wrong side of a poster. So we see players just running in front of an offender but all they will do is wave a hand out for a hypothetical chance at a steal before the enviable dunk. Defense isn't rewarded anymore. It's also sad to see players can't show raw emotions anymore, that be in offense or defense. So much rawness is killed, polished up and the result is so many basketball fans are complaining about the rules and officiating like never before. Something's got to give. There should be a follow option so I could keep track of your comments brother. You should try to send these points to evaluation at the highest legislative branch. These points are too good to drown in the KZread comments.

They also got a issue with pushing. People often forget that a Foul doesn't mean that the defensive player hit their arms and hands. It means not pushing the lower body of the player and leaving enough room for landing. For what i look the Warirors just played terrible defense specially on the 3Q were they gave away 3 fouls in less than 2 minutes by reaching for steals. At lot of Small man on Big man defense from the warriors. Grabs,Pushes,Hugging screens,taller man putting the ball up and smaller man can't reach so they jump can't get it and end up hitting arms, stronger man get match up with a smaller man so they reach and grab arms expecting not to be call a foul

    Almost all of those are fouls, you cant push a player that's in the act of shooting. It's how they call it around the league. They call it consistently for almost every player. Whether they should call it like this or not is a whole different story, but the only one I see that isn't a foul is the one from TJD. As a defender in the NBA, you have to take the contact with your chest and shoulders, you can't fight off the player with the ball with your arms. End of story.

    Of course some fouls were, are, not fouls. The problem from a Nuggets fan, and a former Shaq fan, is…because they are so big and dominant you could call a foul on every play. How can the Warriors match up against Jokic and AG without being physical?. Jokic gets no-calls all the time (and he complains about it). It’s rare the refs actually give him the benefit of the doubt with calls. This was an exception, check out his free throw attempts for the season vs how much he is working inside.

    I haven't seen them play much this year, but he used to get calls in the past. But I think it depends on how the refs are calling that game. Either they play it straight up and just call what should be called, or they say "let's let them play tonight". I think it happens, and on those nights, outliers like Curry and Jokic get screwed. Just because Curry is smaller, doesn't mean he doesn't deserve the call. Just because Jokic is bigger, doesn't mean he doesn't (imagine what it takes to foul Jokic compared to Curry). Now...why the refs call the game a certain way is a mystery to me. Jokic never got games like this last one until recently, and the games were played exactly the same. @@azwanazmi1484

    @@Bicklehoff794 I agree, fouls should be consistently called the same regardless of the colour of the jersey or the name and number on it. Look at the ft difference, when the calls came to shift momentum and who was placed in early foul trouble. This then allowed only one defense to play with any physicality.

I always read about idiots complaining that Steph flops, but he averages 4 free throws a game and is held the entire game. And at least 1 of Steph’s free throws is usually an illegal D free throw, and the other 3 are usually him being fouled on a 3. So while those not paying attention want to complain about Steph, he literally gets one shooting foul call per game, on average, while Jokic, LeBron and Embid, and Harden in the past, flop continuously and aren’t called for flopping, and worse , are rewarded excessively with free throws

Most of the fouls you showed were fouls. The Wiggins one wasn't. But that happens too. The foul on Steph shoving Jokic is flopping. But Steph does have his hand extended... So yeah, deal with it. My issue is, for all the fouls that get awarded to Jokic, curry doesn't get those same calls. Practically, if Jokic goes to the hoop and you touch him, it's an automatic foul. Curry goes to the hoop, gets banged and scratched. Crickets. Or worse a flopping for safely falling with a roll. That's the issue consistency. If you call something one way, call it that same way for the other side.
