And it's sad that the studio trashed all the practicals for the 2011 film at the last.minute to go 100% CGI. Which was terrible for the FX artists too cause they had hardly any time to work on the details and what was released was unfinished and made the look very bad. The practicals we're absolutely amazing!

Another often missed or unmentioned fact: the props department superb job with on screen firearms. The doctors little J frame S&W snubnosed 38. The bosses Colt Mk III .357 magnum revolver. The Norwegian weilding a .223 caliber HK 33 rifle and of course Kurt's Ithaca M-37 riotgun in 12 gauge. And not surprisingly Kurt carries it, like he's very familiar with it. Like combat comfortable. And the glass cabinet carrying at least one other similar Ithaca shotgun. Realistic armaments for this post Vietnam era.

I'm so glad that the scene with the blow up doll was chopped out. That would have been terrible. There was an alternate ending shot. It was done just in case it didn't go well with test audiences with the ending we do have. It was "just to be safe" ending. So the alternate ending was showing McReady in a hospital getting a blood test, which he passes, so he's human. So he does in fact survive and isn't infected

I saw that deleted ending once. Back in the hey-day of late night cable movies, one night a network station, either USA Network or The Sci-Fi Channel, showed this movie and several things stuck out. Two of them was that Blair-Thing talked when he was assimilating Garry, saying "I told you. No one's getting off of this base." And then the dog running away from the remains of the base and a narrator saying in a menacing voice "Its not over". I really wish I recorded that version of the movie since all these years later, no one has really seen that version or remember seeing it. It would spark so much talk just putting that version online

The dog running away wasn't a deleted scene - the network that showed it didn't like the ambiguity of the ending so it was recut and footage from the dog pursuit at the beginning of the film was stuck on the end with an added voiceover.

I think Carpenter made the right decisions deleting these scenes. The axe deaths really don't make much sense plot wise (who's killing these people and why? It just confuses the story) and the blowup doll would just make McCready a creepy weirdo instead of a badass hero.

One day I came across an interesting theory in the comments, which says that Childs and MacReady are humans and none of them are infected. The fact is that each cell of the Thing is a separate autonomous organism that has two goals: assimilation and survival. Also, the Thing has increased self-preservation. And as the blood test showed, it reacts very instinctively to any threat that can kill it at the cellular level, be it fire or acid, and alcohol belongs to the group of poisons. Ethanol has toxic and deadly effects on the organism that can kill cells. At this moment, after Childs drank the bottle, he did not turn into a monster, and the smile on MacReady's face could mean that Childs had passed the "test" and he was not infected.

  • @petercampbell8694

The other theory is that the bottle is still filled with petrol (when MacReady made Molotov cocktails), handed it to Childs and when he took a swig then confirms that Childs is a Thing as it doesn’t know the difference between petrol and alcohol, making MacReady smile as he knows

This was the third film to be based on the novella Who Goes There by John W Campbell jr. The first was The Thing From Another World(1951) The second was Horror Express(1972). There’s a new remake in the works by Blumhouse & John Carpenter based on the complete novel of ‘Who Goes There’, which was only recently discovered. The full length novel is actually called Frozen Hell. It was retitled Who Goes There when chapters were cut out to shorten it up in order to publish it as a novella in a popular SIFI magazine in 1938, in order Mr Campbell to put food on the table. He would shortly be hired as the editor for that same magazine and stopped writing, except as editor/mentor in order to help some of his protégés including Isaac Asimov.

In another alternate ending, Ripley still kills the alien, but the final shot would have been the shuttle moving away from the camera to reveal an alien egg attached to the hull.

Back when VHS was a thing , all movies came more complete than what they re-release on DVD or Blue Ray. Something that I noticed because of my Up In Smoke movie. On my VHS version the jail scene is still part of the movie. In the DVD and Blue Ray it's been deleted out and put as a deleted scene. I bet every single movie released before DVD has chopped our movies up. It's sad and takes away from the nostalgia of the full movie experience.

I had a nightmare which focused on this movie. I dreamt I was watching it but soon I was in it! The Thing was trying to get to my close friend & her boyfriend, K. I don't remember most of what happened other than we were running a lot & trying to hide. As I woke up I saw a bright red flashing sign in front of my eyes, JEALOUSY I had no idea what it meant as I wasn't jealous of anyone. I thought about this for several hours. I decided to go to the shop where she worked as a beautician. Another friend was sitting in her chair getting a haircut. I felt safe to tell her about the dream I had & was now very concerned for her & K. She laughed it off, not unusual for her as she was a happy person & not serious as I am most of the time. A bit later her K came in. She threw both of us out. We went across the street to the restaurant where I repeated the horrible dream I'd had. He told me, "I've often had a feeling S______ would try to kill me if he got a chance". This was beginning to look like a novel so I deleted most of it knowing no one would probably take the time to read it anyway. My dream was somewhat of a premonition, I'd had these before.

They filmed this movie right on the USA and Canada border. Stewart in BC and nearby Hyder Alaska was thier drinking playground. Kurt Russell said thier travel to and fro the old mining sight on a bus to a peak near Stewart was often dramatic and hair-raising. Stewart was chosen because of its generous snowfall per annum. All production equipment was brought in over a winding and often dangerous poorly maintained road. Be well

4:48 First time I saw this shot of the monster's head, I didn't notice the human face on the left. The side with the large fangs tends to draw attention away from it. They should have done a slow panning shot around the whole head to show it, because it's even more gruesome. Rob Bottin's work on these effects was fantastic.

I was born in 1982, first time I saw "The Thing" was around ten years later, and I was scared shitless and _very_ impressed at the same time. To this day I love to watch this movie every year or so. The claustrophobic and isolated setting just ring my bells, the story is quite complex (for a horror movie, especially the "Swedish camp part" adds a lot), cast and acting is superb and overall quality of the movie is great too. Of course one can clearly see it's age, but - c'mon - it is 41 years old, watch "Avatar" when it reaches this age... Definitely one of the BEST horror movies of all timies! And if you disagree: 5:25. Cheers!

I’m glad no women actresses were in this classic. I think that’s partially why the prequel flopped. The stress response men and women have are completely different and in this situation a woman crying would totally have placed the focus on her survival at the expense of the last man instead of on the fact that each of these men faced the fact of their own inferiority in the face of such a advanced alien. Perfectly written and executed. Can’t say the same for the prequel!

All good action movies must have a least one female cast member. Since a deleted scene shows one in vinyl form, we can have an alternate ending. While waiting to perish, they hear a noise behind them. They turn around and see, you guessed it, the vinyl love doll. The alien has taken the doll and assimilated it. The movie ends with the words, "Who's Next?" Please forgive me, as I do have a weird sense of humor.

  • @flowerzforsaturn
    @flowerzforsaturn Жыл бұрын

There was a scene where McReady was saved and took a blood test proving he wasn’t assimilated it was filmed in case audiences didn’t like the ambiguous ending. There was also a scene where Palmer and Childs contemplate burning their marijuana plants in case the thing is able to spread through them. It’s not known why it was deleted but people think it might be because it would have been too comical or because Palmer was already assimilated at that point and it wouldn’t make sense for him to not attack Child’s if they were alone. There is a a screenshot of that scene but that’s all we have

When a big-budget film actually loses money, then it can be considered a flop. The Thing made just under 20 million during it's initial theatrical release on a production budget of 15-ish million. Ergo, not a flop. Obviously, the studios would have liked a bigger initial haul but if any of them were the slightest bit prescient, they would have known that righteous bucks would start rolling in when the movie got a home video release. It's made a fuckload of money on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray (maybe Laserdisc as well.) I personally have spent at least a grand on the movie over the years, including seeing it about 2 dozen times in the theaters in Summer of 82, then all the rental fees and purchases over the years of various home media. Plus about another 100 bucks in t-shirts.
