Whatever you decide to carry, make sure you practice with it, so that you can master it.

Thanks for watching and leaving such a salient comment! Caliber is irrelevant without proficiency.

I have two Desert Eagles in 44 magnum. They were both a pain to get working, but since then, they’ve turned out to be good guns. The guns are also very accurate and tame even the hottest 44 loads.

Good video. Steinel has some good 44 Special loads for defense. Speer used to make a 200 gr Gold Dot 44 magnum load at 1070 fps but i havent seen it for sale for years. I still have some of that load. Buffalo Bore and other makers have good 44 Special loads for defense also. For EDC, the S&W Model 69 with 2.75 inch barrel works OK. It is a 5 shot L-frame. It weighs the same as a 4 inch M19. You need to add the Pachmayr Diamond Pro grip to take the sting out of the recoil with full loads.

I want to thank the ~70yr old grandpa at the range, that let me shoot his 6" compensated Desert Eagle in .50 AE, with a cool optic on top... I fired 1 of his reloads that he uses for hog hunting, & that cartridge set me to hop-skip-&-a-jump right out of my chair like I'd just been electrocuted! After that single shot, I turned to him & said, "Cool optic, I just got the .50 AE off my bucket-list." He replied, "Oh, I was going to let you shoot an entire magazine." ...Yeah, no thanks grandpa, I'll go cry in the corner with my .375 Magnum .

One of my fondest memories was when a gentleman at the range allowed me to try his Blackhawk with some of his snappy 45LC handloads. Drilled a headshot dead center. Bordered on a religious experience. A good big bore is life changing.

Not only can you shoot 44spl but you can go down to powder puff mouse fart loads in 44 Russian if you wish. From rabbits to bears you are covered. Given that the 44s tend to be fairly heavy the recoil from self defense loads will likely be very manageable. If you can't afford a large arsenal of special purpose weapons you could do a lot worse than a 4" 44mag or 45LC. Revolvers are omnivores.

I haven't owned any .44's, but have shot a few. Accuracy and the price of ammo are factors to consider. Weight is also a factor. I carried an 8-shot S&W 627 PC (.357) for a year. The revolver has 2.6 inch barrel on an N-frame. It weighs 37 oz. unloaded. With a quality holster, it's doable. I still carry it some, but it's not one i would want to lose (if only temporarily).

I have carried N frame 44 magnum revolvers for woods work. 3", 4" & even 6". It is doable but a bit awkward. I actually opted to buy a G29 Glock 10mm to replace the 3". Much more convenient. I obviously lose a bit of power but not a huge amount from a 3".

I mean, if you get even one hit in center mass with it, its pretty much a fight stopper. I cant see even the most determined attacker continuing to do much after taking a round with over 900 foot pounds of energy. It would probably even give pause to someone wearing plate armor.

Having a .44 mag as a concealed carry in Hawai’i, pulling down you board shorts, might be a little embarrassing ! Your teeny weeny might scares the thread away though 😂

So, you’re ok with .44mag for EDC, but not the .45acp?

I would say that for revolver shooters I am.......provided they use the .44 special round. I stated the versatility in using the special round would make it relevant for certain carriers who will only carry a revolver for whatever reason. Thanks for viewing and taking the time to comment.

He mentioned -- emphatically & several times -- people definitely should test the .44 mag before making a purchase decision. That's not a glowing enorsement.endorsement. Edit: Was writing while the host was responding.

@@AmmoMart you’re welcome. I’m admittedly a fan of .45acp. Thank you for clarifying your position. It makes more sense to me now.

I'm looking forward the next vid. Re Taurus, it's my understanding the ported portion of the barrel is not rifled (this was true in the one .357 revolver I checked), meaning you lose about an inch of useful barrel. In some calibers that doesn’t matter, in others it could make a difference in reaching expansion threshold.

I have been carrying a S&W model 29 for 22 years. I prefer for CCW my 4 inch barrel. I do have a model 29, 6 1/2 inch barrel as well will carry it in the colder weather sometimes when more heavily dressed. For target shooting, I do use the 44 special 220 grain. Once in a while, I will get a 44 mag rem. 240 grain. For CCW, I use the Hornaday Critical Defense hollow tips. I have taken tactical classes and am able to move around with my model 29 and get off shots quickly. This weapon was made for me, would not consider anything else. Been shooting model 29's since my teen years carrying them for 22 years CCW. I do not recommend this weapon for most people.

It’s not uncommon to see people open carry 44mag and sometimes even 500 s&w revolvers out west in small towns around the Rockies. A lot of 10mm Glocks too. Speer used to make some good defense ammo a few years back, the recoil was really smooth out of a 629 with a 6.5 inch barrel (what I carry some of the time), and that was magnum loads. I bet the 44 special loads they had were even more smooth. Anyways, great video bud.
