But they have no budget for. Fortunately there is also an obsolete Christmas decoration factory that’s about to lay off its entire workforce (the day after Christmas) if it doesn’t receive more orders before then. So, Merry saves her big marketing job by making the factory do all the decorations for the festival AND saves everyone’s job AND make them feature in her tv campaign AND get a promotion AND get to invite her colleagues over AND she’s given a free holiday for her efforts AND ....

The ONLY THING MISSING in these parodies of Hallmark (and Lifetime) Christmas movies are the "ad placements" where the camera guy tight focus shots of the Starbuck's coffee cup, the Kay Jewelers Diamond Ring Case, the Jeep emblem on the front of her vehicle, or even the Timex watch on her wrist and on and on and on!! It ALWAYS floors me when I see so much "commercial air time" on these movies it is like watching a two and a half hour long NASCAR race!!!!

This is officially brilliant. Don't forget to make sure that final romantic kiss happens somewhere where there are countless fairy lights. And she'll have to be in that small town for precisely two weeks for some reason, at the end of which it will be bang-on Christmas Eve, and there will be a Christmas party/ball/gathering of some sort, etc. (There's those fairy lights.) And try and fit some sort of competition about making gingerbread, snowmen or cupcakes or something, that this sophisticated adult will enjoy with childlike glee. Also, they may be seen at a dinner table, saying how great the food was, but never actually seen eating. And don't forget the busy career woman must initially have an emotionally-repressed busy career-obsessed boyfriend in the beginning, who is colder than a fridge in the Arctic, wears a business suit and deals with corporate takeovers (boo!), property ownership, stocks and shares or something. And she probably should be wearing a red coat or dress during that final kiss too. But before I get too smug about all this...which is nothing to be proud of, because there's nothing easier than to mock others... I'm a screenwriter. When the economy fell, I retrained as a teacher of English, and ended up in Madrid. That 'sensible' job suddenly ended, and I had nothing to keep me company but a handful of English-language TV programs and Hallmark movies. I thought most were pretty dire, but I still watched them for the reason most people do; I want what happens in those movies to happen to me. Then, funnily enough, I came across one I really enjoyed; THE NINE LIVES OF CHRISTMAS, which stands out for reasons I can't quite outline, other than Kimberly Sustad and Brandon Routh are actually LIKEABLE, apart and as a couple, and break the mold of the Hallmark casting in some ways. In the end, just for my own writing pleasure, I wrote a treatment for sequel, which is on my writing blog somewhere, so as much as I think its a little laughable how formulaic they are, I wonder just how much comfort they bring to people.

Andrew~ I rewatched The Nine Lives of Christmas tonight! I love it. I don't know how many times I've watched it. It's simply a classic. You're right- Kimberly Sustad and Brandon Routh are charming, engaging and warm. Their chemistry just draws you in, and there is nothing artificial feeling about that movie. Quite simply, if one wants to feel good, I would recommend that film. My father watched it tonight for the first time, and it sucked him in right away. Be courageous and send your screenplay in to Hallmark. (I realize this is easier said than done.) I think everyone would love a sequel! 🙂🥳 Good luck on your shifting career. Hallmark-style, I hope you are able to do not only what makes you happy, but what is fruitful for you, as well. 🤗🎄

The Nine Lives of Christmas is one of the few Hallmark movies I like, too! I think it's because her focus on her career/education is relatable and not over the top--grad school really DOES take up time and energy, but it doesn't last forever. Plus the actors have great chemistry and the cats are adorable.

Among the only romance nuttier I've seen than some of these Hallmark movies was a British film from around World War II I saw not too long ago. In it, an RAF pilot is trying to get back to Britain, communicates with a female military staffer to guide him in, but is forced to bail out before reaching the airfield. He survives of course, and not too long after meets the gal who talked with him on a road. She's happy to see he made it, but then he turns on the charm and before this ONE ENCOUNTER is over, they part with a huge kiss and begin dating. It was hilariously unrealistic. Perhaps the British filmmakers meant it as some morale booster or propaganda (like "Our boys are SMOOOOOTH when not in combat"), but no normal person starts an intense romance THAT quickly, do they?

I watched the last 10 minutes of a Hallmark romantic movie a few days ago. I had honestly never seen a romance movie before, but was waiting for the Rachel Maddow show to start. In that 10 minutes I learned that a Prince traveling incognito in some dumpy snowy town in Indiana fell in love with some riff raff girl with low self-esteem. I thought the lucky couple in these movies was supposed to be really handsome and beautiful, but these 2 were very average. For some reason, the Prince went back home to his royal palace (which looked like an upscale tract house in California) where he had an arranged marriage ahead of him. But he couldn't go through with it, got the blessing of his royal parents (they went from forcing him to marry a princess to encouraging him to return to Indiana in 5 seconds), and he rushed back to Indiana. There he stepped off a dingy train (not exactly Amtrac) in full Princely regalia, offered his common riff raff bride-to-be a rose, saying that she was the rose of his life, and gave her a chaste kiss (like you might give your grandma). Happy music ensued and lots of happy smiles from extras. YIKES!!! Lessons for me? 1. The acting is horrendously bad in these movies. 2. The plot is more insane than QAnon conspiracies 3. You can get the gist of the entire movie in the last 10 minutes so do something constructive until then
