i love that Amaya is a disabled character in a fantasy setting, with no fantasy "replacement" for her disability. I've seen a lot of characters who can basically function like able-bodied people, because of magic or sci-fi tech acting as a stand-in for their disability. but Amaya is a human with no magical powers, she's not a mage like Callum or Viren, but she's still a capable and well-written character who can kick ass. also love that not only does she have a translator, but her family and close friends seem to either already have learned sign language for her benefit, or are trying to learn sign language. it's really heartwarming.

TheDragonPrinceOfficial account answered an ask on tumblr about this. She was blind for a little while, but they didn’t have time to show it. Apparently there was going to be another scene of Janai helping Amaya as her sight slowly returned, but it never got past the brainstorming stage, since there wasn’t enough time for it in the episode.

amaya is the perfect character, shes strong even with a disability, a loving aunt, carefree most of the time but when it counts shes a hell of a fierce fighter

I am currently studying to be an ASL interpreter in college. I love that in scenes where there is no interpretater, we don’t get subtitles. My brothers all called to me to translate what she was saying in that prayer scene and I told them that it wasn’t translated intentionally. I think it shows hearing people what being deaf is like, in a sense, because you don’t know what she is saying, you’re missing character motivation and what she’s saying. Deaf people have that happen all the time in real life. After I explained this to them, I did give them rough translations. I’m not a good enough interpreter yet to do full translations, and it can be a bit hard to understand the signs when you’re use to seeing them as smooth motions (this is pretty choppy, which is understandable). I only gave them the translations because they asked nicely though, haha. This has to be one of my favorite representations of a deaf character in media. She isn’t relying on interpreter to do what she needs to do, HEARING people are relying on her interpreter. She is capable alone, and that isn’t a common thing to seen in media. It’s super cool.

@@impactframes6514 I would highly reccomend trying to involve yourself in the Deaf Community if you can! My experience with Deaf Culture is incredibly positive, and most people are so happy to help you understand them when you make an effort to use their language. You can learn so many beautiful stories from them. A lot of people in the Deaf World have had pretty sad childhoods (especially the older generations) so do try to be mindful of them and their feelings, and I'm sure you'll learn a whole lot! :D

These comments made me go to the wiki and actually learn that Amaya isnt just mute but actually completely deaf but very able to read lips.

We learn enough about Amaya in the very first episode. 1) She loves her nephews(Evidenced by how the first thing she did was hug the boys). 2) She is deaf, but very expressive(Though I thought she was mute at first). 3) She’s a badass(Took out Rayla in a fight).

Can’t wait to see she says she want to go to the bathroom in ASL(Thumb between the pointer and middle fingers in a closed fist) that would be very awkward.

She read his lips and could clearly see that he said "human troops" slower than the rest of the sentence, plus he was shouting it, which looks different from normal speech. Also, he looked up as he said it, which was suspicious.
