One key advantage of Airbus is that the aircraft have much less technical related ground time. Also, the overall safety record of Airbus is far superior to Boeing. What a blunder of Boeing to have not bought the Bombardier C-Series to replace their oldtimer 737.

I fly the Max every day. I never feel unsafe, I would however feel unsafe flying with some airlines in other parts of the world who doesnt keep their crew up to date with new procedures.

I’ve piloted both the 737 and the A320 series. The advantages of more modern technology are very apparent. While the operating differences can be even more significant, from the crew training perspective, as the differences between Chevy and Ford automobiles, once familiar with those differences, the greater functionality of the A320 and A220 is more like the differences between the old rotary telephone and the modern smartphone. So, the A220 should have an even brighter future as an alternative to the now troubled 737. Its use of modern technology solutions has been severely tainted by the MCAS disaster. Proving that band-aide fixes to aged 737 will no longer sustain it into the future. Traditionalists though, those who continue to favor familiarity over innovative change will always exist. Proof is in the fact that the even older DC-3 is still flying in the 21st century.

You are exaggerating when you comparre one to the other as a rotary phone and modern smartphone. It's not that different. The real and major difference between either is the fly by wire LAW of the airbus and the way the thrust levers work. That aside, some pilots prefer airbus, others like Boeing.

I'm kind of surprised Embraer isn't benefiting more from this. I know some of it's varients are held down in the US by seating capacity regulations that are currently in place for commuter jets..sadly.

Well if you did stretch the 220 up to about the MD 80 size you might have something with 5 abreast seating to compete with the 737 and it would still be newer than the 320

Airbus orders are going to be over a decade out for delivery soon, carriers are still getting 737s because they can get them sooner.

As a frequent flyer, I actively avoid flights that use the MAX. I am hoping airlines will get the idea that the 737 MAX is an unpopular plane with the flying public and push Boeing to develop a clean sheet replacement. Maybe Boeing will get a the message.

I can't say I'm particularly worried about flying in the Max, but I do boycott them if possible. I don't want to reward Boeing or the airlines who chose to buy them - if I can choose flights which don't use Boeing, then I do.

So many errors here. The 737 hasn't had the JT8D low bypass engines in decades. That was only on the 100 and 200 series. It has the CFM56 engines which are high bypass engines also used on many A320s. And why are they showing a 777-300ER when they're talking about a 737? Match 0.8???

The Airbus A220-500 has not been officially announced, right now it’s nothing but a rumour.

The max has shown the industry product extension are limited in engineering terms...the 777 could have exceeded its safety envelope by stretching the concept which might apply to the a220-500 ?

As far as I am aware, the A220-300 was the base model with the A200-100 being a "shrink" and the A220-500 was part of the original design concept as the "stretch" so it shouldn't be an issue.

Can someone explain why you'd choose the A220 500 over the smaller A320. I'd agree a more radical A320 with a dramatically lower fuel burn A320 as the future competition will be the chinese, embrarer and US carriers purchases of Boeing

Boeing lived too long on their early success: the B707, the B747, and the B737. The marketing and product development, even with Airbus is around, still believe airlines will buy their newer models because it is carrying Boeing logo and is coming from the manufacturer who gave the world the "Queen of the Skies". You can't win market share by launching models that in concept and in overall design is the same model you are replacing. They are repeating the same mistake that US auto maker committed post 1973 crises who kept launching new models based on the same chassis and overall body design. Boeing needs a new concept to stay in the race. Something revolution and transformational like their models in 1950s and 1960s

Boeing was/is more focused on enriching its executives & shareholders, versus building a quality product. Boeing put themselves into 2nd place due to their own greed.

If it's not Boeing, I'm not going. For all the problems with Boeing, they don't have Flight Management Systems that override pilot input, as Airbus, as a friend who has flown nothing but Boeing aircraft for over 30 years says, Scarebus. He know too many A300/A320 family/A330 pilots who have a plane try to do something other than what was input into the controls.

Airbus: we plan a new aircraft to enter service in 10-15 years. Boeing: we feel there is no need to even start designing any new aircraft for at least 15 years. Airbus: launches the new aircraft, outcompeting Boeing. Boeing: *surprised Pikachu* also Boeing: runs to the basement to find some old blueprints to somehow cobble together a new plane in a rush.

I am sick of 'text to speech' apps being used in so many YTs. Many cannot pronounce non-English words or special words. For example, listen to the incorrect phonetic enunciation of Guillaume and Royce in this YT. "Just because you can [use a text to speech app] doesn't mean you should."

A220 or A320, I don’t care but I really don’t want to fly Boeing anymore. I absolutely loved the 747, but these are phased out now, the 777 is really ageing and crap compared to the brilliant A350 and 737 is just outright scary. That leaves the 787 which is mediocre at best.

@@JPB57 Seems like you know noting about planes. The A330 NEO is the updated A330, and the A350 is a completely new plane with carbon fuselage and wings, like the B787. The difference with the B787 is it is an all electric architecture, replacing the "Old" but "Trusted" Hydraulic Actuators with electrical actuators, while the A350 retains Hydraulics, there are a few other exceptions, but neither plane is just a make over of an older model. Time will tell which solution will prevail, but as for reliability and groundings the A350 is hands down the better plane.

@@TayebMC The A350 is carbon fuselage, but built in 3 pieces in a section when the B787 is one piece which is much better. The A350 is in carbon, but still with classic systems such the air is still coming from the engines with all the pollution problems which affect everything aircraft, on the B787, the air is coming directly from outside with four compressors which can still work in case of engines problems. The brakes are full electric when the B787, the A350 is still equipped with classic hydraulic. The B787 has a central computer systems architecture while the A350 still has a lot of local computers like every aircraft. On the B787, you can start both engines at the same time but not on the A350. The airframe de-icing system is electrical on the B787 while still air with the A350 and …. Yes the A350 is a conventional plane built with carbon, while the B787 is really a new step in the aircraft development. Sorry sir, I flew the Airbus, and the Boeing, and I am not talking about the flight philosophy of each one. I am living close to Airbus Industry, I would prefer to say the opposite, but I have to recognize that today the B787 has no equivalent, maybe the next Airbus (I hope so) Concerning reliability: we had 24 A350 and 35 B787 in my former company before I quit, and reliability was the same

Boeing tryed to destroy Bombardier and almost succeeded, it sued them and manadged to ban sales in US for several years. Boeing lost in courts, but for C series it was too late, they run out of money. After that Canadian goverment has find rescue in Airbus, and decided to severe most of relations with Boeing, going from Superhornets to F35 and buying tankers based on Airbus. Boeing burned all the bridges in Canada.

Like anything else in life, this takes time and a track record. Max 8s and Max 9s are back flying. Many stay away. They have less occupancy than other aircraft. As the months go by, the bookings increase. More and more say "hmmm, thousands of flights every day in MAX aircraft..." I'm not denying the errors made and it does not make up for those who tragically suffered. When I flew on a MAX 9 recently (on Alaska no less), it was only 3/4 full on a typical busy weekday. But as time goes on, more and more will feel more comfortable. Probably will take another year or two. And no, I don't work in this industry. But I do analyze businesses that run into trouble and how they recover. I do think they will recover the confidence. Just not overnight.

The US will never let Boeing go bust. It is a strategic industry that will be preserved. Boeing will get a capital infusion to help it overcome this terrible phase and develop a brand new, clean sheet replacement to the 737 with a revamped and improved manufacturing process (perhaps reintegrating Spirit’s operations). This will take time but Boeing will survive and recover to compete with Airbus.

@@he1461 Boeing's main problem these days is not airplane design but fixing their management issues and company priorities. As long as cost reduction and stock market price is their first priority they are going to struggle as this will continue to affect product quality. Such a turn around is complex as it involves worker morale and management style.

@@he1461 That may be what a lot of people are expecting, but there’s a couple of problems this time. Never before has there been a situation where the company has become unsafe. Money can’t fix that, only people and time can. And it’s not up to Boeing or the USA. If the rest of the world decides Boeing and/or the US Gov, politicians or FAA are still bullshitting them (as happened at the time of the MAX crashes), then Boeing has no international market. Strategically that is a disaster for the USA, they exit the market, Airbus cannot fill it, and the Chinese move in. The USA does not want to be economically beholden to the Chinese for its air transport sector. It’d be better to invite Airbus to become a global monopoly and help them do that, if the rest of the world does indeed declare Boeing unflyable. Second Boeing isn’t exactly popular in the US gov. Under their stewardship they’ve messed up a lot of military programs. The US DoD would probably prefer to see these programs go to LM of NG. So Boeing could get broken up.

Looking ahead, I expect Airbus and Boeing are going to cooperate because their interests are aligned: (1) neither company can alone produce enough aircraft to cover the world’s needs, (2)both want to prevent the Chinese planemaker from making inroads in the aviation market, (3) both tolerate each other better than they would any major non-western manufacturer. So in many ways, Airbus and Boeing need each other and will join forces to preserve their duopoly as long as they possibly can.

Well sure there are plenty Max aircraft with many carriers. However, carriers can buy all the Boeings they want but what happens if the public won’t set foot on them. I book flights where I can avoid the need to get on a Boeing. Price is not the driver. I just took my third return trip for pleasure this year and haven’t set foot on a Boeing yet and will continue to avoid them.

Boeing needs to step up its game with a clean sheet airplane after getting rid of former MD employees..They should make a narrow body 787. That would be fueled by hydrogen that will be757 replacement. Then make a fatter and longer 787 to replace the 747/777x.

If Boeing was to go under like a lot of you are saying ( wishing?) . Good luck flying anywhere in the future for your holidays as you won't be able to afford a holiday involving a flight. Why not? Because if 50% of the planes were to stop flying, guess what you won't be flying either. Air fares would triple at least so enjoy your bus or train holiday in your country.

Airbus co-opted the Bombardier C series plane and just did badge engineering. Boeing will be releasing its next-gen planes at the same time with revolutionary wing technology.
