I was at this game in what was a troublesome time for the blues. Just 2 years earlier they were league champions with a lot of that side playing here. Two horrendous defeats in the season before in the European Cup Qtr. Final and FA Cup semi final in the same week destroyed the confidence and self belief of these players. Tommy Wright was a pale shadow of the player who got high praise for his performance against, what's been called the greatest national team in history. The 1970 Brazil world cup winners Henry Newton signed for a big fee, didn't fit in to this team, and later joined Derby and resumed the form he had at Nott's Forest that had attracted Everton to sign him. David Johnson and Alan Whittle, two brilliant young players left the club shortly after this game. The 1972- 73 season was poor. We were dumped out of the FA Cup by Millwall at Goodison, and finished way down the league table The arrival of Billy Bingham in the summer of 1973 later brought in Bob Latchford, Martin Dobson, and Dave Clements, and a nearly league title in 74-75. Two defeats by Sheff Utd and Carlisle late in the season, cost them the title that might have changed the hierarchy of football on Merseyside, that was claimed by Liverpool in the mid 1970s I also recall Bernie Wright flattening Tommy Smith in a derby game at Anfield.

@@lawtonify I am fairly certain that If Bernie had been around in this troubled season for Everton he would have ruffled a few feathers against some of the teams Everton never laid a glove on in the opposition penalty area this season
