Everglades Camp House Tour (Airboat)

Ойын-сауық

•We head out to the swamps of the Florida Everglades on airboat and tour one of the few camps secluded, deep in the swamp. Also finding a long time plane crash site. This camp sits on stilts in the middle of the gator inhabited fresh waters of South Florida. This camp is the only one I know of that has its very own helicopter pad. Enjoy the video!

My cousin and his buddy had a camp in Big Cypress National Park, it was on high ground. We'd go mow the grass every 2 weeks. It was one of the few that were legal. They also had a bunk house, bath house and kitchen. Water was from rain collection and a diesel generator ran the electric. They or friends had an airboat camp too. I never made it to that camp.

This is a really cool video. I've been canoeing in Florida for years and have always been impressed with the courteous nature of air boat operators when they encounter paddle craft and we definitely appreciate that. The drone shots of the Glades were very good and I pinpointed that fish camp on Google Earth just out of curiosity. I use to be a CFII-MEI at Craig Airport in Jacksonville and spent many hours teaching flying lessons over the marsh in North Florida and Southern Georgia. My opinion on why they didn't recover the fuselage of that plane was that it was a total loss. We had a few planes crash in the marsh grasses NW of Fernandina, Florida and if they kept the landing gear up and did a belly landing the plane was usually worth sending a barge in to recover. If they put the landing gear down or the landing gear was fixed they'd summersault on impact and the plane would be torn to ribbons. Just my opinion. Great video that I enjoyed watching.

For Craps and giggles I looked up this crash. It actually happened in 1987, Tail number N421DT. The plane was abandoned in the Bahamas for 7 months, then someone who had never flown that type of Aircraft with an expired Medical Cert flew it to Ft. Lauderdale, then was in route to New Port Richey. The investigators found that parts of the engine were missing including push rods and rocker arms and e spark plug was "stowed" with its lead attached. I am guessing people started pulling parts when it was abandoned or work had been started before it was abandoned. So it was a plane that was not airworthy flown by a pilot who was not certified in that type and his medical certs were expired which tells me he probably didn't fly very often.

Landon, yes, Lycomings are the most common for "air"boats, with Continentals second. You still see some old Franklins out there! As far as "car"boats, Chevy motors, with gear reductions are becoming more prevalent. A lot of guys used to run Caddy motors with props right off the crank cuz the Caddys produced HP at low RPM. But, they are heavy! Engines get decades of use before any major repairs, since they aren't under FAA restrictions. Many aircraft engines are "run-outs".
