Within the charming valley of Everdell, beneath the boughs of towering trees, among meandering streams and mossy hollows, a civilization of forest critters is thriving and expanding. From Everfrost to Bellsong, many a year have come and gone, but the time has come for new territories to be settled and new cities established. You will be the leader of a group of critters intent on just such a task. There are buildings to construct, lively characters to meet, events to host-you have a busy year ahead of yourself. Will the sun shine brightest on your city before the winter moon rises?
Everdell is a game of dynamic tableau building and worker placement.
On their turn a player can take one of three actions:
a) Place a Worker: Each player has a collection of Worker pieces. These are placed on the board locations, events, and on Destination cards. Workers perform various actions to further the development of a player's tableau: gathering resources, drawing cards, and taking other special actions.
b) Play a Card: Each player is building and populating a city; a tableau of up to 15 Construction and Critter cards. There are five types of cards: Travelers, Production, Destination, Governance, and Prosperity. Cards generate resources (twigs, resin, pebbles, and berries), grant abilities, and ultimately score points. The interactions of the cards reveal numerous strategies and a near infinite variety of working cities.
c) Prepare for the next Season: Workers are returned to the players supply and new workers are added. The game is played from Winter through to the onset of the following winter, at which point the player with the city with the most points wins.

@@Quackalope It adds a different perspective to the game. When playing multiplayer, you can just give up on the events, but that Rat will score it even if it doesn't have anything for it after it steals every valuable card from you. 35:00 The twigs are the same in Deluxe and Normal Version, they all have "edges" now. They were modified after the first printing because they were rolling all over the place (they were completely round before - more info can be found here boardgamegeek.com/thread/2211469/wooden-twigs). The upgrade packs for twigs are thus mainly aimed at owners of the first printing

Regarding the innovation discussion. I think I would add the keyword of "novelty". Each individual element of the game is not novel, all these pieces have been done before. I would say this game is very innovative, it pulls several familiar concepts together (+ a stellar theme) in a way that makes for a pretty unique experience.

Just picked up the collectors base game before seeing this video. Great job going through all the main points. Totally agree; while I’m a sucker for metal coins and always want them, these are so shiny they kinda remind me of kiddy pirate gold and look as though they are plastic (until you pick them up). Not sure you guys mentioned, but the other main difference in collectors edition I believe is all the extra cards and legendary cards that come included.

  • @knighthawk3749
    @knighthawk37493 жыл бұрын

Excellent review, but I wanted to add a few things. The extra wooden twigs are specifically meant for owners of the first printing of the game which had subpar quality ones. Current printings of all versions of the game have the exact same twigs. You can buy upgrade packs for retail editions of both the base game (Glimmergold pack) and Pearlbrook (Freshwater pack), however, it is less expensive to buy the collector's editions in the first place. There are several more differences between retail and collector's editions than you mentioned. Besides wooden occupied tokens and metal coins (which are really just points and not coins in money sense) base game Collector's edition also adds 3 mini-expansions, 6 rat meeples, and a large deluxe die used in the solo game (this game plays fantastic solo and has different difficulty levels to expand replayability). Pearlbrook Collector's edition upgrades your pearls from plastic to glass (which feel awesome), adds a bunch more cards to various decks, and 3-D Wonders.More importantly (to me) it adds 3 more types of critter meeples. The reason having extra meeple types is worth it is because Bellefair expansion, which basically consists of a bunch of mini-expansions you can add individually or together, adds an option to use specific asymmetric abilities to each critter type available in the game. I guess you can use rat ability with with the turtles, but why would you want to. 😁

One more suggestion, on metal coins. There is definitely a difference. I have a cigar box that has two sets of Viticulture metal coins and two sets of Tang Garden metal coins. Plus a set of clay poker chips from Brass Its own separate box. I use them across the board for most other games and use the the set that best fits the theme of the game I’m playing.

You made a great point there that the game sometimes gets chalked up to the cards you manage to draw. 28:58 But that doesn't mean that the game IS necessarily a worse game. The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. For example, Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar has what I see as an innovative timing mechanic - and in fact, that is the core of the game: Should you take your resources out now or should you wait to get something more or better?

Supposedly there is at least one more expansion. It was rumored to be on KS this fall, but it might have been delayed due to the pandemic. The theory is that it will have a map adding to the right side of the board since the first 3 expansions add to the left, top, and bottom. Also it will, hopefully, come with the Big Box to store everything together.

You nailed this or else I too might love this game and all things Everdell related. The appeal of this game is that strange little animal world that you find yourself emmerced in. The flavor text is amazing. If you can't see past a scifi or space setting it won't most likely won't appeal to you. The deluxe edition with Pearlbrook was my big GenCon 2019 purchase, and I don't feel I could have got a better game to look back and remember my first Con. The tableau /engine building mechanic, along with the really tight worker placements checks all my boxes. My complaint the size of the text on the cards goes from small to ridiculously small. Working on some player guide ideas for that. The price point is a hefty all in but as you buy as you grow into the game. Thanks for your time guys!

My GF doesn't really like it because she doesn't like how the game ends for one player while the other player has to play 4 more turns. So we do think the game is ok, and with the right crowd we will play it but everything it offers an other game we have just does a little better. A little surprised you suggested against just buying the core game when you suggest 4/5 games with the base before incorporating an expansion - would think that's plenty of game time to justify just buying the base to find out if the game is right before adding an expansion to build on the experience.

So, we play with a rule wrong, but feel that it doesn't add take away the from the theme but adds to it. Do you think that it breaks the game? Rule Mistake: All Players Transition to the next Season at the Same Time. The player that went to transition first, starts as the 1st player for the next season.

First - play how is fun! But, I think it takes away from the game personally - the flow of your settlement and extending your turn (working longer hours in the day) is a core flow of the system

@@Quackalope Maybe I wasn't clear enough, players can still chain their turns. So let's say player A is the First Player, he takes 7 turns in the first season, player B does not run as efficiently and only takes 4 turns. Once everyone has "passed" or runs out of turns for that season, the 1st one to "pass" (Player B) goes 1st at the start of the next season. This allows Player B to get a small boon, as they get 1st pick of the forest action. I guess thematically, Player A worked long hard days, while Player B worked short quick days. But they both worked the same number of days, as the seasons comes for all at the same time. Maybe we'll give the correct rule a run and see how it changes the game.

@@Qaaxxx I gotcha :) - I am not sure how that would impact the game, I know limited spaces and cards could be a factor - however - I say if it is fun for you all I like it! :) but if you want do try the original - the designers did make it that way for a reason!

@@Qaaxxx If you just want to know what the actual rule is, each player advances seasons individually. Theoretically you can be in Autumn while I am still in Spring. I don't find it really happens in practice and the players are usually no more than one season apart. As Quack said you can play any way you like, but you should try the other way because it changes strategies significantly.

As someone who loves euro games and Redwall, I should love this game, but I find that I can't stand it. It rides so heavily on its theme, but in the end the game is very luck based, and has so little player interaction you might as well not even be playing with others.

I really feel that you left out one of the most important thing reviewing / recommending or not a "competitive game" and that is Interaction of players, why don't mention that for more that 90% of the game you feel like playing a solo game for points because your cards have little to none effect on the others players (the only interaction that feel remotely meaningful was the use of cards from the common pool and possibly the use of a resource spot that block other workers for going to that resource) and for me in a competitive game that's not enough

Dude, you have to let your guest speak. I did a little experiment with a stopwatch, and for the first 11 minutes of the video, you speak 8 of those minutes in total. You dont event let your guest introduce himself and when you ask him to give an overview of core box Everdell, you let him speak for a whopping 25 seconds before you take over.
