Ever wondered how many amps an Induction Cooktop will use when you're camping?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If you're like us and love a hot coffee & cooked breaky when camping, but not too sure which is the quickest & easiest way to cook. Then this video is for you - we've tried all the cooking options - from a Butane Stove, Portable BBQ, Over the fire, Gas cooker in the caravan and the best option by far in our opinion is an Induction Cooktop.
It's not as many as you would think. We've got one in our 79 Series THE_ACCELERATOR so we put it to a couple of tests.
TEST 1: Boiling 1/2 litre of water on the induction cooktop & in a kettle - which was quicker and which used less amps.
TEST 2: How many amps does it take to cook Bacon & Eggs
Very impressive unlike the cooking skills displayed.
Induction is so good some Caravan Manufacturers are now making Gas less Caravans with Induction hobs and Electric BBQ’s. We believe this will be the way forward and will eventually become the norm. Its that good!The benefits of inductions are;
Not wind affected - you can be on the beach in 30knot winds and till cook
Green Energy Source (when running of solar)
Cool to touch in 30sec
Easy to clean
No Gas Bottles taking up space
We use the Breville 'the Quick Cook' Portable Induction Cooktop: www.breville.com/au/en/produc...

Attention science experts - considering all of the energy used is converted to heat somewhere in the system, if the kettle only transfers half of the energy to the water where is the rest going? Either the inverter or battery is getting hot too. It would be interesting to see how a 12v kettle performs ie no inverter.

Also, because of the inherent voltage sag of lead acid batteries with large amp draw it will pull the battery voltage down during use which will increase the amperage drawn from the battery even further. If you want to run AC appliances with more than >600watts in a mobile setup you really need lithium or a massive lead acid based system which is unrealistic due to size and weight in a vehicle.

For example, in my personal vehicle, one of my USB charge points has a light the annoying doesn't turn off and I constantly pull 0.1amp because of it but have never ran my battery flat from the tiny draw. Having a quality battery monitor is always handy to keep an eye on these kinda of draws 🙂 The Enerdrive ePRO is what I use but you also have the Victron Smart Shunt and RedArc SMART BATTERY MONITOR. Check what bms you have in the battery. pretty much all cheap lithium batteries use 100a bms which the continuous discharge is 60-100amp. 100a discharge will get you close to 1500w but after that it will cut off. Best to stick below 1400w. Unless your bms is 200a+

We had the same experience with a 100ah battery and the same time to boil water at 1000 ft of elevation. One caveats the bms needs to be a 100amp bms or the battery will shut down a 50amp bms cannot deliver the peak voltage required

No one seems to have mentioned you can get a 110v induction cooker from America. Use a 240v to 110v 1kw transformer on a 240v 2000w inverter. That way the transformer absorbs the initial spike of the full power of the induction hob without tripping the inverter so long as you reduce the power of the induction hob after starting it.

why not just get an inverter that can handle the peak current, no need to add a transformer.

@@ozbowling Yea If you have a way to keep charging batteries that's great but if your trying to save battery amps my method even works with a small 1000 Jackery Explorer power bank with solar charging

Thanks for your comment! We are unsure if using a 240v - 110v transformer would meet the Australian regulations when it comes to 240v used in Caravan & canopy applications.

You kind of lost all authority calling that bacon. As an American I feel offended lol. I am curious about the difference between a electric skillet and a induction. I know it's higher but I can cook more on the skillet and avoid using more power for a second burner right? I might do a small one burner induction and a skillet depending on what I need.

see this is the kind of stuff we need to hear, raw numbers. Not like yeah i think it was about probably maybe a 1000w or something to cook my whatever. No just come with the battery you have and a percentage, or Ah you used. That means i can now go on and think like ok my system can do this easy. So i might actually go on and buy a bit bigger inverter and cooktop as im running prettymuch double-3times the solar and a 560Ah battery. So i think i could even get away with a normal 3 zone induction plate and a 4kw inverter then and stil not pull that battery to 0.

My guess is minimum 30 amps to cook pasta. Then the meat. Then the vegetables. Then a cup of tea. Then heat water for washing up. No way dinner is getting cooked for a family for under half your battery capacity. Fine if your near a caravan park. No good in the bush.

That depends on your cookware. If you have good cast iron dutch oven that retains heat, you can get the water boiling, add your pasta, stir, put the lid on, turn the cook top off and it will finish cooking without any further power. Same with steaming your veg. Too many variables with cooking meat to get into here, but a Dutch oven with a good sealing lid will conserve a lot of your battery capacity.

Thanks for your comment! This system was paired with a fixed solar system with the option to add portable solar also to increase the recovery time of the battery & stay off grid longer. It was also paired with adequate DC charge sources with the ability to recover the battery from flat within a short time period of driving! Yes, it can deplete your battery system but power management & the ability to replenish it is a key factor into any off grid application.

We readily accept computers and cell phones but are more reluctant to go from a flame to induction. Mostly in the states in stores which have gas and electric ranges for sale, no one even has an induction range on the sales floor and the staff has no idea why this electric range costs more. To learn we have to keep that area of our brains active and it is good that we do, as if we continue to learn into our senior years, we stand a better chance of going the distance to, when we die, die with out wits undimmed. Whatever we need to apply ourselves to learn and why it works and how to get the best out of it, helps us ultimately in everything else we do. I do have an induction range in my kitchen, had to wait 7 weeks to get it, and it was well worth the wait. I had to argue with the electricians who did not put the proper circuit breaker into carry the load. Whipped out my owner’s manual and said: “These are the manufacturer’s specs and this is the power usage. Get the wire, the proper circuit breaker and BTW, the outlet has to match the hook up from the range”. They did not want to do it and my husband isn’t very good at understanding how induction works until we had it installed. Now he loves it. Men may not like a woman who can read and then understands what she reads but the specs are all about what is safe to carry the load so that the romax is the gauge to carry the load. It is the oven as in the standard electric range which takes more power to run, but so you can also have all 4 burners running, means the amperage is greater. No, duh! Blonde hair and female do not equal “stupid”. My dad had Alzheimer’s at my age and my mother’s wit were also dimmer. I am 69. We eat a plant-based diet due to cancer concerns and arthritis and asthma which we were not expecting it would help. The diet means I no longer have to use my wheelchair. As we age, we need to go with what is smarter and not take the doctor’s toxic “you’ll be on these meds the rest of your life” meds. It is good for him and his bank account and the drug manufacturers. My husband is 70, he takes one blood pressure pill as he loves his salt shaker more than I. I don’t take meds, don’t need to. Yes, loads to learn about the diet change. But it is better than being sick. Good video. Think even though we have a motor home with an LP range, that a two-burner induction portable cooktop, is a good idea. I do have a single burner I used to see if induction was what I would like and it was. Advantage is that cabinets don’t get coated with a sort of lacquer from the residue of burned gas and animal fats. A cleaner environment at home or on the road is best for health too.
