Power BI fascinated me because of all these tricks that you can build into your visuals to make them ever more useful. I used bookmarks to do pop out windows, stacking visuals to create new visuals. It's infinitely satisfying how much you can do just with basic built in Power BI tools.
Seriously, you guys are so appreciated! Helping people take PBI to the next level! Thank you and cheers.
This is amazing!! Can't wait to try it, thank you Patrick!
This is great! Lately I've been keeping a log of changes to my report inside the power query using "enter data". This way a log of updates is embedded into the dataset itself. I like this spreadsheet idea for more frequent and alerted notifications.
Wow!! This I need to practice, really good for keeping a history of changes too and by whom.
Thanks for the great idea! My team has been exploring different ways that we can communicate with our customers. I realized that we already had a SharePoint List setup with report updates, and this notification idea was a great way for us to start this updates with our customers. My Manager and team loved the idea and we are implementing it across all of reports. Thanks!
Wow, this is really creative! Love it, Patrick!
This is awesome Patrick, thanks for sharing. Now you given me OTHER things to think about.
Amazing! Thank u for this great tip!
Super feature, and as always a clear and practical demo. Thanks a lot !!
Great idea and solution. I think the list of changes is a good candidate for a featured report so people could see that something changed in a report that might trigger them to open the report. The excel could have a Test/Prod filter too so that the testers could see what changed. The idea to include the report url is great.
Oommgg... so beautiful!! I am so excited to try this out!!
Patrick you are spoiling all the end users with these videos! Well done, really good and very much needed.
Amazing idea!! Never wanted to have notification until I saw this video. Thanks a lot
You have just solved my problem. Thank you Patrick!
I swear - every time i have a question about PowerBi that I think is random - ya'll have a video on it - thank you!
This is an amazing idea! Thanks for it!
This is so freaking clever, Patrick! Fantastic work, as usual!
really good feature, never see anything like this before , thank you
I love this, could definitely see myself using this in a future report
Fantastic... this is WOW.. I am gonna try this n showcase to my client as well. Thank you Patrick.
Love it! Combine this with To Do and a Flow to excel and notifications will show as soon as I've completed my task! Definitely need to do this
Yes! This is (yet again) great!
nice way to deal with this issue
Excellent tip. I'm sooooo using this in my next report
Brilliant and very creative. You have a great problem-solving mind!
Brilliant idea. Congratulation 👏👏👏
Excellent!
Wonderful 👏
Oh wow, this is a brilliant mechanism for building an exception report as well, have an exception report notification on a main dashboard page that brings you to the details on another tab.
This video is right on time, I was searching for a way to notify users of the latest changes. This is BANANAS !
Patrick with the trick. Thank you for your brilliant idea.
I like it! Pair this with your "pop-up window" style so that it appears over the current report page rather than another blank page. Finally, make the link not a separate column, but instead make the "Notification Text" conditional as a link based on your measure. Now the notification page is a little pop-up on the page you are already on, and the link is cleverly set into the text, so now the pop-up can be smaller and less cumbersome.
Amazing - good job - love it!!!!
My wheels are turning Patrick! I love it!
excellent idea
Great. Thx
Oooh nice. Thank you!
Amazing!
It's great! I would also try with a Tooltip (would use the list list for the page the user is viewing). It will show when you hover over the buttom and the user can read the update list as the same time they see the report.
This is a very nice approach. I was thinking how amazing this will be to make the data entry a commit on the DevOps repo. Thanks!
Perfect!!!
ABSOLUTELY A BEAST, MAN! Thanks for the vid!
Brilliant stuff
You ate amazing man! Thanks
This is great! But if you connect an on premises gateway from your data source to the pbix, with the excel data source house in your local machine, the gateway will no longer appear, taking away the ability to schedule refreshes. I would think instead of using excel, SPO list would be better so it would not interfere with your gateway and automatic refreshing.
THIS. IS. RAD!!!
Another suggestion. Create a PPT page and publish it in the navigation. We were scrambling 5 mins before an upgrade for a landing page telling users what changed and it works GREAT. Once we figured out embedded links work, it became super powerful and simple to update with great graphics. If you can edit a ppt page you can change the pbi landing page. No "publishing" needed after the first configuration, just edit the deck. When you publish your app, go to the navigation tab, Create a new page and add a link to the presentation. We loaded ours to google docs so it is public, anybody can view and multiple people can edit.
You aré the best of the best of the best!!!!
Genious!
Awesome. 😍
Brilliant
Patrick... Thats a heavenly insane skill you just demoed in the video..... Great and OUT OF THE BOX work!!!!
I'm stealing this! Brilliant!!!
Amazing
Awesome! Thx ;)

It really is, i have learned a lot of tricks from them. The good thing is there are many MVPs out there creating and sharing amazing tips with the community.
wow, really cool solution.
unbelievable crazy, you are! ✨
Great video! Can you use Power Automate to send emails if there are any notifications?
I have done something similar for COMMENTS on the reports. For a fashboard that serves to clients, the client team inputs on Excel the comments eith appropriate dimension columns (date, category, brand) so the comments are showd and sync with the filters (on date, category, brand). It's great and needs no maintenance but the client team analusing and adding comments for the report. We also tried with Power Apps but the integration is not so nice yet
i Didn't know that i needed this.
Cool technique 😎
Very smart solution, but does the notification in the excel table should be changed manually by the developer/user ?
Fantastic idea Patrick! Really useful when a report is being continuously enhanced and new features need to be communicated to a bunch of report consumers. Though I am not sure if the report page column (that is shown at the end of the video) in the CSV file would work. Wouldn't the link to the report (which you have hardcoded in the report) change every time you publish the report with new changes?
That is pretty nice! And any way to receive warnings by email depending on the result of a dax query? Maybe too much. I think I can adapt you system to my needs to show a warning if a source column has values not present in the mapping table
Next thought would be how you make those notifications personal to the person
Love the idea! Too bad there is not an out of the box visual to nicely display long text.
WOW. My brain just exploded all over my keyboard. How friggin cool! Great idea.
You are insane dude! Keep it up
great
Insane amazing
Great Video! Had the same case myself, except in my case, only selected few users can see and open the page. My idea was to use USERNAME () to work around a solution. But all users were able to see the notification.
I love this work around, this is perfect and a huge help to what I need to do! Thank you for sharing this Patrick @Guyinacube My question pertains to using a data warehouse. The sources I use for most of my reports are from a data warehouse, and as soon as we import an excel table that isn't one of the facts or dimension tables, the scheduled refresh within the Power BI web service is disabled. Do you have any advice for this roadblock?
That is awesome Patrick! You just gave me some ideas so I will try to implement this in my report. One think I don't know if is possible to have a map with dots that may represent events or projects and THEN to have option to click on the dots on the map that brings up the pop up tooltip that will stay open and as part of the tooltip to have navigation to certain pages or reports. And then option to close the tooltip manually. Is there possible to do that ?
I clapped... Thanks for your great channel!
Thank you from Russia!
Once again Patrick..... A M A Z I N G !
Hi Patrick, Huge fan of your work. I got a requirement from a customer : He wants a pop-up whenever new data added to the dataset and should disappear automatically after few sec. Or atleast we can manually close the popup. I have created a button as popup and used bookmark for close icon. All worked fine but after i close the popup it is not reappearing again if i refresh the dashboard.
Good stuff. Some of my users want to be notified when certain data changes or a measure reaches a certain threshold (e.g. project hours cross a threshold of 500; or when project cashflow turns negative and so on)... any ideas on how to achieve that?
Awesooomeeeee!!!!
Good
for default color you can also put anything longer than 6 characters as color and it makes the color transparent -- in case you change your background color
@AgulloBernat
3 жыл бұрын
wait. Don't. I was just trying it and it creates an error which appears every few seconds --- weird. When is a color of a shape it does the trick even though I think it's more like a bug
Fascinating. But wouldn't I still have to publish this again anyways? Unless of course the Excel notification sheet is available to the Power BI service some how? Power Automate, MS Flow via Sharepoint?
Hi Patrick, this is great...maybe a bell icon can be used for notifications similar to KZread ;)
This is amazing, is it possible do to this based off a version history in SPO? Our team has been using that to co-author reports.
Sweet
Great method! Can the user can open the excel file with the link on report?
I like! Just thinking, is there a way how to automate this with deployment pipelines ;-) if a change is accepted, add the change to a file, store the change, and go with your approach. I would place the notification, not in the left upper corner, is my place for the most important visual :-) But it is a really great way to handle changes !!!!
Can you help me how to schedule a notification when the last fresh done in PBI..?
How about making it a bookmark link that hides/shows a table that slightly overlays the report (like a modal)? that would make it more like a notification window instead of navigation.
great! hhis I need to practice. A question, have you connected Power BI with SSRS? and transfer filters?
Crazy Patrick... You have Jarvis with you right...how would you get these ideas😁😁
You are a fucking genius, mate. Thanks!
Which video camera u shoot with??
damn that's incredible
👍
Could you make the notification be presented to specific users one time and then not any more (like when a new software is installed in your device and it offers tips but you can turn them off)?
I didn't know I needed this until I saw this video! This is B A N A N A S! !
