The book this is based on, "The Boy with the Cuckoo Clock Heart" by Mathias Malzieu, was an absolutely amazing book. It does have a lot of differences from the film. It also has a sequel, but sadly it hasn't been translated to English.

I forgot what it was called in French, but I think that Spannish name is "la alargada sombra del amor". Hi I don’t know if anyone’s already said that, but just in case.... I think that Madeleine is associated with tears because of a French expression "pleurer comme une madelaine" which translates to "Crying like a madelaine" which refers to someone who cries excessively or unjustifiably. Hello ! You have questions and I have answers ! 1- In defence of Jack's mom in the book she is described as "Very young" So I think she was a teen mom. Also, Madelaine is a doctor that treats irregular poeple (Like homeless poeple or prostitude) And I don't think she demands money. 2- Madeleine spent many years crying and collected all her tears, now it's been years and the tears fermented into an alcohol ! (I know it's weird..but also..poetic?) 3- Miss Acacia still says the line "You would make me a muderesse" in French. But..for my part I get it ! If you could kill the guy your dating with a kiss..you'd like to know in advance ! It wasn't right of Jack to keep something like that from her. Something that would defenitely affect her in the long run. 4- Most other weird things that happen can be answered by "Idk...it's symbolic or something.." 5- The book is good BUT THE ENDING...MAAAAN THAT ENDING ! If you have more questions, ask away !

I think it comes from her abandonment issues of feeling responsible for killing him, even if he wanted it. Thats why him throwing his own key is so important, because then he knows she can't blame himself

With Madeline's tears, she collected them because they would ferment to alchol. She said mens tears were stronger so I guess alchol wise stronger when fermented. Madeline drank the fermented tears to get through the days or situations. It seemed she was often very depressed... possibly depressed because she cannot have children

Fun fact: How speaks Joe with rhymes and all is called “Slam” (at least this is how we’re calling it in France idk if it’s spelled differently in English) It’s a sort of poetic “”music”” type where the “”singer”” creates their own rhythm with the rhymes and sentences And the reason why Joe speaks like that is because his French voice actor is an artist who’s mostly known in France for doing Slam ! The artist’s name is Grand Corps Malade if you wanna check out his songs :) (Sorry for my spelling mistakes :,))

As a kid I always interpreted the ending as Jack’s clock heart exploding as a result time stopped. I never understood this movie but I kind of understood that Jack probably was dead.

About Madeleine's tears, it really is coz she's been crying for years and years for not being able to bear a child. I'm fairly sure she can't get pregnant or have a child in general for some reason, so when she got Jack, of course he was much grateful to care for him. All of her tears have been fermented and distilled, like how wine or alcohol works, and it's probably her alcohol. She is a witch doctor after all, and she's had that old guy have a xylophone for a spine, so it's no surprise her alcohol is her own fermented tears. Love this video btw, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock heart's my fave movie musical thingy!

Its also possible a secondary reason why she doesn’t want Jack to fall in love is because her lover broke her heart after he discovered she couldn’t bear children, so it’s my theory that’s a secndary reason for the “never fall in love” rule.

I've been waiting for so long for someone to talk about this movie, thank you so much! When I watched it as a kid, some details and subtext really made me feel creeped out and impressed at the same time. Like when those ladies came to Madeline's place, so that she could presumably "cure" their pregnancies (???), or the clock winding scene that seemed just a bit too intimate. At the same time it always felt like no one knew about this movie, so I even felt flattered to have it as a little hidden gem in my collection of the odd and enchanting :^)

Madeline was a midwife who was pretty much eccentric that the town named her the town witch. Poor people and prostitutes would go to her for medical help. So yes most likely prostitutes went to her for abortions. Her ways of helping was unconventional but that's what she was known for and why her help was either cheap or free.

I realized this movie has many subtle adult jokes, like Jack and Acacia´s first dialogue with some implications that she was turned on, Georges Melies saying his ex-girlfriend left him and it´s implied that she did so because he couldn´t satisfy her s3xu@lly, and if you look at the clock winding scene with a bit of malice you may realize she is giving him a handjob (she was the only one he would allow to touch it and that´s something she was meant to do every morning so his heart would keep beating)

I remember HATING this movie as a kid, I thought it didn't make any sense and I felt like it was so stupid for Jack to run away from his home after poking that guy's eye out when he LITERALLY tried to KILL him. so frustrating to kid me but i might give the book a chance

It seemed Joe came from a higher up family so they named Jack for attempt of murder, even though it was Joe's fault. He was just a bratty kid. Madeline decided to help Jack run away from the law with a plan. It just didn't go as completely planned.

I had a DEEP hatered for this movie when I was younger. I thought that it was weird how all the characters looked, I didn't like the fact that I didn't know the age of the main character, and I was not a fan of the animation in general. The only part I enjoyed was that part with the dude and the camera. Me and my sister would take turns watching movies on Netflix, and I would always choose "A Monster in Paris" and she would always choose this.

4:38 so this scene confused me too for a while in both French and English but I can give an interpretation. So the whole scene is just in Jack's head. It's about him being chased by Jack the Ripper, the famous English killer who, still to this day, we're not sure if he even existed. The reason why he sees Jack The Ripper is because in french, when he explains what happened at school, Jack says he killed Joe's eye. So he sees a killer who he share the same name with because he thinks he is as bad as this serial killer. The whole scene is just about Jack fearing what he thinks he became/what he could become if he let his emotions out of control again, which will later on be replaced by Madeleine's image whenever he tries to confess to Acacia.

Hi I'm back here after a year, I forgot to add that info but Jack the Ripper can also be seen earlier in the movie right before Jack and Acacia's duet, hiding behind a wall potentially targeting Acacia, which can be a foreshadowing that their meeting is slowly killing Jack. I also read a theory on Tumblr that Jack the Ripper could also be a metaphorical form of Joe. The first appearance could represent how Acacia sees Joe; gloomy, always in the shadow and looking after her (in his own stalking, possessive way like a killer) while the train scene is how Jack sees him; cruel, violent and vengeful.

So I guess this scene was a “lost in translation”.

This reminds me of one book. It's a similiar story - boy born without a heart, doctor says his parents that one of them needs to give the boy their heart. The boy's father did so. Some years after the boy's heart sometimes stops, he slowly falls in love with a girl and he survives because she metaphorically gaves him her heart.

i had the funniest coincidence that I discovered a song from the movie by accident, and then i found the book in a book store a bit after, and that's how i found out about the movie, which, the book is absolutely WILD! The book is also incredibly depressing, and from that I can just say that, while I prefer the movie over the book, I'd say the concept could maybe have been better handled by both

yea i'm pretty sure the whole "jack et la mécanique du cœur" album, which is basically the songs telling the story of the movie (it's the same songs) actually came out even before the movie

I've loved this film since I was a kid, but I never truly understood its scope until the last few years. One thing I adored about this film was the simple representation of disability, I personally am disabled and many of the characters who hang around Madeleine's place are disabled. From Jack to Luna the representation of the disability isn't treated as some sort of horrible thing, it's just a part of their lives. I also loved the bittersweet ending of Jack passing on her grave as she was the one who protected him, saved him from death multiple times, yet she was eventually what killed him. I also found the art style of this film to be of the gothic nature, and I think that really adds to its charm, a film about the odd aimed toward the odd. Overall I personally find this film to be a classic and well worth a rewatch.

If you need more "3D animated movie with bonkers plot" recommendations, may I suggest "Daddy I'm a Zombie" (and the sequel "Mommy I'm a Zombie" if you have the time)? It's about a girl who has a dad that works in a morgue, and then she gets turned into a zombie that goes on adventures with an Egyptian goddess and... some other dude, I can't remember who he was exactly. Such a weird film

This was my favourite movie since I was 10. I understood that he had climbed his way up to heaven as his clock heart started to die out. It made me almost cry but I was fascinated. The plot was simple and easy to understand for me from the start and I'm glad I understood it at the time.

For a few days, I wondered if I could climb snowflakes. It didn't snow where I had lived. Yea, you can see where this backfired. It was pretty sad seeing him leave the girl and making Joe successfully taking him out. It was sad that the distilled tears were kept as choloform, she kept the tears from other's sadness, and kept it as a memory thing to use as choloform. She must have gained immunity to it after a while but I'm not sure if my theory is correct or incorrect. So please. Do not trust me. Him climbing the snowflakes to meet her either in heaven or outer space was calming. This movie made me realise that my mother was trying to look out for me. I realised that I shouldn't think of ignoring her and not get angry at her. But, we change and now, I hate my mother with a passion.. Well.. that's all I have to say.

This was a hidden gem I was so glad to find way back when. I was working in Walmart and I liked to peruse the movie section for obscure finds and the cover just drew me in and I bought it right away. I adore the movie, love the songs and the book as well. Edit: I feel Acacia had all rights to be mad at Jack for not telling her if he falls in love he will literally die from his heart stopping cuz it's to much. It's kind of an a important detail in something long term. The ice cream was symbolism for Jack liking her chest. Just like when Acacia puts up thorns it's protection.

This movie amazes me even to this day, I think he would've lived honestly. I think the message of this movie is that it doesn't matter if you have a "mechanical heart" love always hurts one way or another, and we end up destroying ourselves. It wasn't his clock heart that couldn't handle the throes of love, it was himself that couldn't and he ended up destroying the part he grew to hate the most.

This movie's art style REALLY tickled my fancy. I LOVE Tim Burton type stuff, this movie is FULL OF IT!! Just like Soul Eater! Something about it is just so.. amazing.

this movie is pretty big here in france, i remember being *obsessed* with it back when i was, like, 11 or 12. i never found it weird or strange in a bad way, i always loved it for how magical and poetic it is, how everything is different and kinda random. the animation is absolutely beautiful, i love the colors of the universe, how the movie shifts between them to change the mood of the scenes. not very subtle but it looks very cool ! the soundtrack is dope as well

My and my sister absolutely love this movie. It’s weird and beautifully so. The songs are interesting and fun to sing along. The circus is my personal favorite because there’s so many odd details in the environment (Ghost Train is dope in my opinion as well) and like you mentioned the ending is sad but in a creatively beautiful way.

I remember how sad i was at the end of the movie. I watched it as a child around 3 times but some parts i forgot. I remember the feeling of the movie though because it was so peculiar and unusual. I just cant explain the vibe of the movie at all it was kind of hauntingly beautiful. They moved so fast as well which just added on to the confusion. Though the movie was weird and it scared me a little bit as a kid i will admit. It was very beautiful and my favourite song was the song that was playing when they kissed, the fast pace of the song was amazing i would say then the credits song was my second favourite because of how it suddenly slowed down from the fast pace. Overall I absolutely love the vibe and nostalgia i get from this movie, unusual as it is.

So, my mother and I watched this movie a few years ago and little me was truly disturbed. I was so disturbed that I refused to even look at the cover when I search for movies to watch on Netflix. But now that I got older, and see the beauty is the weird, I see that it's not so bad.

when i was a small kid, about 6 or 7, this was on netflix. now i absolutely ADORED this movie as well as a monster in paris. i watched them nonstop all the time. the first time i watched it, i cried so hard after and my mum walked in super concerned. she refused to watch it with me for some reason afterwards. im so glad this is getting the attention it deserves. so nostalgic and beautiful!

I was so scared of this movie when i was a kid. The part with the bullies playing with his heart kept me up at night

I used to be so scared of this movie when I was a kid. There were so many dreams about me being transported into that world.

My teacher actually played us this movie during one of our Christmas events and MAN was I absolutely terrified because of how unsettling it was (for all these reasons that you've mentioned) and the fact that we were staying at school late that day, too! Man, it did not do 3rd grader me very well! It's still a little goosebump-ey, looking at it again, but I'm considering rewatching now because I spent most of the first time I saw it crouched behind my friend's chair hahahaha missed way too many details, as I've noticed after watching your video. But also I love your stuff :DD!! Good on you for getting your silver play button!! Definitely deserved!

i cannot stress enough of how this film used to scare the living hell out of me, but now that im more grown and understand it, its so touching. im trynna have the same type of love. True Love. Very sad movie, 10/10

i latterly just rewatched it and now i cant get this weird feeling out of my heart😭 Shit relates to life to much...... Besides all the weird superpowers and cuckoo clock hearts and stuff. Sad fucking movie man. Gave me Nostalgia

It's too bad the actual tone and plot is so scattered, because the world this movie takes place in is so interesting and creative, the characters simple but charming, and I think it has some sweet messages. Love is hard but precious, live life to the fullest, there's hardships and also beauty in being "different" (in the book especially Joe, while still a jerk, does gain some empathy after having his eye gouged because people look and treat him differently for it, and he realizes how wrong it was to treat Jack that way for his cuckoo clock heart)

This movie traumatized me. This video just appeared in my recommendations, and I remembered how I had watched like, 20 minutes before stopping the movie because I was completely frightened. Maybe it's time I give this movie another chance with watching this video.

I liked this movie, it's nostalgic to me because the story is similar, if not inspired by Tim Burton's Edward scissorhands. Though this one is hella weird and kind of creepy in the animation style and some of the content.

I was literaly thinking about this movie a few days agoand I saw that you uploaded a video about it today. I remember watching it in high school with a friend of mine and it really struck a cord with me. This was around the time when we were really getting into French animation.

I love this movie so much, i remember seeing it as a kid and thinking it was just a fever dream, but i found it and rewatched it some time ago and it has become one of my comfort movies ever since. I'm completely obssessed with the "flamme à lunettes" song. It makes me upset is not a famous movie, the soundtrack is great, the characters are charming and the story is touching. I plan on buying the book soon, many people say is even more deep and mature than the movie.

I first watched this movie in an orthodontist office during an appointment so I could barely hear the audio and my teeth were in pain the whole time so I was so freaking confused but I still loved how strange it was

I’ve always associated this movie more with vibes than cohesive storyline, it’s a very melancholy movie and I enjoy it on rainy days, it reminds me of poetry and the music is divine! The love story is very sweet and I personally interpret the ending as death

I liked the pause with the rs' u did in the beginning 👍

I always want to share this with someone, because I love it, but I always end up like; "Who on earth could I possibly show this to without them wondering if they need to commit me?"

First off, I'm old; I was 38 when I first saw Dionysos' animated video for Tais Toi Mon Coeur, and I was completely enchanted by the steampunky, fairy tale aesthetic of the song and visuals. Looked up the band, learned about the concept album, and forgot about it. Then the movie was made, and I fell in love all over again. Hoping at some point to get a hold of the book, now that I know it has an English translation. (Not surprised that much of the spiciness from the original concept album was toned down though. Jack's pet hamster was originally named Cunnilingus, no I am not kidding.)

Thank you for introducing me to this movie. I didn't even know it existed, but I love foreign animated films like Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea and Ernest and Celestine. That's crazy to me they had the guts to give it a tragic ending. I'm so used to Disney movies giving kids movies happy endings.

Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart is my favorite movie ever, the animation is beautiful and the visual metaphors are so clever

From what this video has revealed for the movies choices of character design [specifically human anatomy], it appears to be heavily Tim Burton inspired. While the movie is not stop-motion animation- but rather what appears to be CGI animation, I feel it works for this film. The atmosphere and overall design of the film draws on that unsettling, yet enamouring-ly elegant gothic-esque design witnessed in works directed by Mr. Burton. However, the film adds its own French-steampunk/emo-like aesthetic in the outfits, setting, plot and score arrangement. This films world has so much steampunk-ish machinery and aspects littered throughout its environments and the whimsical elements of this reality that any cog enthusiast would agree, they would bust several nuts upon viewing. The outfits and costumes heavily remind me of the ones you would find in the music videos for the 'classic' emo anthems of the 2000's, such as; "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" by Panic! At The Disco [the circus outfits], "Helena" [the post-circus outfits] and "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" [the school uniforms] by My Chemical romance, "I Miss You" by blink-182 [scattered throughout the film], and so on. And finally, a score that- as Ros noted has a somewhat strange but fitting punk-like rhythm to it. All of these factors are what set it apart from the beautiful works Tim Burton. While it draws inspiration from his creations, it also brings something completely new and unique to the table. I really enjoyed this video and dissecting what you showed us to write up this comment-essay on what the movie reminds me of. It has a sort of nostalgic and welcoming air around it that reminds me of some of my favourite Tim Burton movies like 'The Corpse Bride', 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', 'Caroline' [specifically the other world], and 'Frank and Weenie', while successfully not feeling like a copy-cat and bearing a new and exciting concept. These two aspects- for me, mash together to form a memorable new narrative that allows me to cling to a sense of familiar comfort while still having no idea what's coming next. Despite having no idea what's going to happen, I stick around for that sense of familiarity and the intriguing aesthetic choices that just work. If you're still reading this, wow. You have patience and I respect you a lot for that, but I also appreciate you taking time out of your day to listen to my stupid rambling. Anyway, this video was very well made and now I really want to watch this movie and draw fanart for it. Have a good [insert time of day here]! :)

No, yeah I get what you mean! It does sort of have that tim burton flair but at the same time kind of its own thing and has its own charms. Where tim burton focuses on pale skin amidst dark environments, this movie has pale colors and just SOME vibrant ones like Miss Acacia. Also I love reading the long comments especially! The fact that you saw mine when it’s so late because most creators will only read them for about a two day window just shows that you really really give a damn about the viewers, that’s a super important quality to have! The film’s colours feel super pale, muted, faded and washed out unless they’re like on the red or blue spectrum. Which, as an artist is really fascinating to me with colour theory and the emotional ties humans develop towards colours. E.g: red = passion, anger, love, agony… blue = sadness, fear, uncertainty, emptiness… It’s all just really interesting to me and nerding out over super mundane shit like this is really fun to me, it means a lot when someone else gives their input on my dorky speculations lol. Anyway, this is the first video of yours I’ve ever seen and it was top notch! Can’t wait to see more, you’re super skilled at what you do!

I saw this movie when i was a child, back then i was about to move out from my city. And i watch it while get confused, but i understand a lil bit of how sad it is...

Hey, I'm glad you finally checked out this movie! I've been watching your channel for about a year now and have been getting very excited for this one!

Oh yeah I remember this movie, it thought me what French cinema avant garde was and if something really strange happens it’s a metaphor (like the rose thorns) I remember liking the music, specially the one with the grind organ, when the train scene happened is where the movie lost me and the characters was difficult to keep track on (I was like 13y) near the end I felt like I started getting better grip, then he started climbing and was like “what? What is happening? This is the ending!?” I wouldn’t say it’s the best movie, but it definitely left a impression. it’s like a scratch book of ideas, doesn’t fit perfectly together but I can make out what you’re going for. But now when I’m older I can definitely see myself enjoying it more.

Thank God someone else has seen this movie, I believe it was on Netflix before and I saw it randomly and just watched it on repeat randomly

I have watched it. It's a story about running away from literally all your problems and responsibilities, even after they resolve in your favor.

Here's a movie I've never even heard people acknowledge: *Sinbad: Beyond the Veil of Mists* (2000)! I enjoyed this movie a lot and still have the NHS recording I made off the SciFi network channel. The animation was awful for the time, but the story and visual direction was compelling. Watching it when I was young gave me enough imagination to fill in the gaps where the budget in the animation couldn't. If you watch it, you'll hear a lot of childhood familiars like Jim Cummings and Kevin Michael RIchardson, but also stars Brendan Fraser and Jennifer Hale. I know Fraser did a handful of voice work but he really works well in adventurous rogue-type roles like Sinbad or Rick O'Connell.

This movie gives me such memories, It may be to some people the movie was disturbing or scary, but to me, I adore and love this movie ever since i was younger! I always watched it until my siblings got sick of it and made me stop watching it. Until 2 days ago when i re-watched the movie. I still love the movie and everything about it!

This was the first movie I've ever disliked, and I saw it during a time in my life where every movie I watched was good by default but I actively disliked this movie. (No offense to anyone who did enjoy the movie this is just my personal opinion and I'm not saying everything in the movie is bad it's just too much of the movie bore me) Then again I don't watched the movie years ago so might have a different opinion these days if I were to rewatch it.

I hated this movie when I was younger XD I thought it was really sad and dark, I didn’t like the ending either (not saying it’s a bad movie- I’m just really sensitive) I cried at the ending, I didn’t like that he died

The first and only time I watched this movie was with my first girlfriend, and I don't remember exactly what I took away from it. But its lessons about love of all kinds was a piece of the puzzle that made me subconsciously realize that I didn't like her like that and instead was interested in my other ex who I was with for 2 years, and while I haven't dated anyone since then, I have a better understanding of what love is like. Of course, that isn't solely because of the movie, I can't even say the movie was a big piece in me learning to understand it. I don't think the movie is very accurate in its depiction of love to begin with. But in that first moment, I do think it helped.

I swear I thought I saw this movie somewhere but I couldn’t remember if I *actually* saw it so I watched it. It was a surprising great kid movie even though I’m definitely NOT the target audience lol. We need more poetic tragic movies about love and romance 💖.

If jack and joe were both born on the coldest day, that means joe is literally and figuratively cold-hearted, and it shows in his character.

Dude i remember seeing this movie when i was 8 on Netflix was a whole different experience this was a rollercoaster of emotions I this movie showed what it looks to love and be loved and i was jealous of jack for soo long then when jack dies at the end was an inevitable event was hard to accept as a kid the music and everything was so perfect together watching this movie again later it held up to my standards it was a classic tale of love and pain was the best

I remember watching the movie when I was little and loving the story and music. Rewatching it when I’m older now is very sad for me. It reminds me of my little brother who is born with a heart condition. Knowing he also has to be careful of his every move just like Jack.

Aw man I remember being in love with this movie for some reason! I am slightly upset that the Netflix version doesn't have the french version, but I still love it!! Also you should try reviewing Summer Wars!! Maybe you did? I feel you have, but it feels like something you'd enjoy!

I remember watching this movie when I was a little kid and LOVING IT. The character design and music is so good. That INTRO was so well done and probably one of the highlights of the film. I definitely think it’s a pretty weak plot in some of places but yea. With the whole beginning sequence I also think it’s a great build up to the strangeness of the world and accepting all of the weird mystical things. Also Acacia has thorns because acacia trees grow thorns as a protective adaptation against predators. I’m really thankful instead of her being named rose or something else. I personally liked how Joe spoke in ryhmes lmao I’m pretty into it. I also loved the other characters in Madeleines house including her. Her ridiculous hair looking exactly like a recreation of 18th century French hair(same thing for her outfits). The pinup girl with a deeper voice and steampunk leg. The man with the xylophone always seemed like he would be such a caring father figure in Jacks life and the way he would cheer him up by playing on his spine was adorable to me, kinda like Edward scissor hands. It’s really weird and unusual to have such an important part of the body replaced with what seems like an inconvenient and weird item, but the usage demonstrates how the character is in reality. I also liked that weird funky star man he was cool I loved his little gremlin laughs lmao. Maybe I was a weird kid, but I always loved watching very unusual things. Like Ruby Gloom, Monster High, Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland, mostly anything with Johnny Depp, corpse bride, coraline, a monster in Paris, a German vampire cartoon, just creepy and unusual things have always been such an interesting and beautiful thing in my eyes even as a small child. I’m really thankful that I was allowed to have that type of expression as a child because it’s still a very important part of my life. I have a dead rabbit flower pen from hot topic as a Christmas gift and it’s one of my most favorite things in world. Anyways that’s my 2 cents(more like monologue but whatever) this was a good analysis of the film and I’m god you enjoyed it :>>
