EVENTING IN A THUNDERSTORM ISN'T A GOOD IDEA

Another eventing vlog for you this evening, os maybe it's closer to tetrathlon with the amount of rain we had. Wilma stepped up to the mark and tried really hard in the conditions, unfortunately a couple of slips meant she lost confidence, and we didn't end on the result we wanted. Still lots of positives to take from it, and a great example of what it's like to produce a young horse!

I am guessing she was praising the horse so much because she did well in the dressage event? I didn't catch how she did on the first event from the rider, but that sounds very positive...I don't think she would be celebrating quite so much if she had done badly.

True-blue eventing, that is. Once rode out of start box with lightning in distance also and buckets pouring down. And was wearing bib number 13! AND on a fiesty thoroughbred stallion. (No joke!) We made it half-way 'round, then he slipped in the muddy woods, landed on top of one of the big dark tables in there, and I retired, grateful we were both in one piece. True-blue eventing, well done to get her 'round and safe and all part of her training experience.

It will be so calming.

Wilma is a beautiful queen; one with courage and a steady heart...and she did very well in her events, for being so new to it....especially in a thunderstorm, with heavy rain and the ground all wet and soggy and horse and rider all wet and cold because of the event being outside and not in a warm and dry arena and ya'll running late and being frantic. She didn't let it rattle her. She danced through the dressage like a graceful ballerina, she jumped clean in show jumping and she only had one little slippery moment going through cross country...and you said she STILL went back and jumped that fence perfectly, she didn't spook...which given the stormy, wet conditions, at least she didn't take a fall or refuse any of the fences (that we saw on the footage) and it looked like she finished all the events. She didn't let the flashing lightning and booming thunder spook her when she was working. If she can do this well at an event that isn't scored, and nasty conditions, and she's an inexperienced young horse, imagine how brilliant she will be when the conditions are perfect and she's had some experience doing it....she will shine like a star. I was very impressed with her. This was a good learning experience for her and now you know that she can do an event in less than optimal conditions and still do it and keep her wits about her. Congratulations on having a good event.

That is why I enjoy going to Hunter/jumper shows here in the U.S.! Our local shows (here in Georgia GHJA -Georgia Hunter Jumper Association is the state governing body for shows) take place in Saturday and Sunday, although people arrive in Friday to school their horses over courses -*-They DO change the courses for the actual competition, but at least the horses have seen the fences before!-*- So even if it is pouring rain, you can hide out in the stables if need be, and most of us have waterproof quarter sheets for our horses and rain jackets for ourselves while waiting ringside for our turn to go. Of course you DO have to take off the rain gear to actually DO the course, so we still end up a bit wet. But NOTHING close to Meg’s eventing experience. Our nationally rated shows, governed by USEF- United States Equestrian Federation- generally start on a Wednesday and run through Sunday. Again, everyone can shelter in the stables, in a golf cart, and have all your rain gear on for schooling and waiting for your turn. Also, some of our show grounds, both in the state of Georgia, and the surrounding states which make up Zone 4 (USEF divides the country into Zones for the sake of calculating year-end points and hopefully awards!) have NICE show grounds with many areas for horses and riders to shelter during the rain or during the heat. SO nice to have those shaded areas with the fans during hot weather competition! I have almost gotten heat stroke at one show bc I forgot to stay hydrated and to eat enough to keep my blood sugar off. I had competed 3 different horses in multiple divisions, so I was either riding or running around the show grounds ALL day! After my last class of the day in the late afternoon/early evening, I was sitting on my 17.2 h Dutch WB and started feeling really dizzy. Luckily, I managed to dismount BEFORE I actually fainted! 😳 That would have been a LONG drop to the ground! But it’s crazy what we horse people put ourselves through in order to compete, whatever the discipline. I WILL say that in the U.S., if it is actually storming, they will halt the show for safety reasons. Once the storm has passed, the competition resumes. Also, 99% of our competitions are done on a surface, so we don’t have to worry about putting in studs and slipping on grass (did do a few show jumping classes in grass arenas while it was pelting rain-literally could barely see where I was going bc the rain was blowing in my eyes. Even with studs in, I found it terrifying. Although, to be fair, regular show jumping is won based basically on who can go the fastest without knocking rails. So zooming around and making sharp turns ima grass arena is just too much for me. I think it got SO bad the show organizers called off the rest of the days’ classes. Ugh. NOT a fan of jumping on wet grass. Even in the arenas with surface, if it gets TOO flooded and boggy, the show organizers often cancel the rest of the classes for the day. Luckily, so many of the nice show grounds have GREAT all-weather footing, which doesn’t get slippery. Yup. I’ll stick to my hunter/jumper competitions in the US!!😂 But good job, both Meg and Wilma! Meg, you are MUCH braver than I am! If I was riding and saw a bolt of lightning, I would NOT have carried on!!😮

i love that, explaining to the viewers what you have discovered about your ponies and horses you have trained where they weak points are and their strengths along with how you go about correcting the weaker issues and how there are many ways to correct just one issue is fascinating to learn of! I have seen what you do make all the difference , even if it requires many trainers invested. I have watched other competitions with various of riders with their horses and much of it isn't nearly as sharp or nearly as much poise as i have become used to seeing in your performances on here. Well done.

Very glad you decided to finish the day even being drenched. Great example for all those future students to see. I love sport horses & events and am a fairly new subscriber. However, all my experience is from western horse shows in the US. I would love to learn about eventing so I can enjoy and appreciate it more. I do understand dressage but am missing a good deal in the show jumping and cross country. Question: Can anyone give me a good channel to watch so I can learn the basics of the jumping events and some of the training background? (I just learned about plaits).
