Evening Prayer at Conception Abbey

At Conception Abbey, our Benedictine prayer comprises both Mass and the Divine Office, or Liturgy of the Hours-the daily round of praise and thanks we offer to God for his countless gifts to us, especially our salvation in Jesus Christ. We strive to make our prayer both beautiful and accessible, modifying ancient forms of Gregorian chant for effective expression in English. Our prayer is augmented by holy reading and a spirit of contemplative silence. We offer witness to a frantic and fast-paced society: the peace we all hunger for is ours in Christ our Savior.

As a Catholic for all of my 71 years, I have enjoyed following my faith. Whenever possible I attend services of prayer such as this, the spiritual peace and comfort I get from them cannot be measured. Thank you for this beautiful posting of The Divine Office and your offering to God. To watch and listen to this is so good, I struggle to find appropriate words, and lastly, the Acoustics in this Abbey are incredible. I would love to visit but, from the UK it's not so easy these days so I will continue to enjoy with my eyes closed and my rosary in my hand. Thank you All.

I don't like analogies, BUT, I think every religion/philosophy is a like telescope aimed into an eternal unknown. The Catholic faith is the most ornate powerful clear focused and beautiful of them all. If you can learn to look through the Catholic telescope without getting distracted by it, like most of us Catholics often do, or damaging it like some others, you will live in that peace. You will see God. You will see Humanity. You will know what its like to feel complete. Your Free Will will transform from doing what you want to not wanting at all except the pure desire for that which endures....Love. Basically, its worth a shot!

Also, don't discount being a priest or a monk. Those are the vocations that young men should discern before discerning if they are called to marriage. And for women the same can be said. Religious life as a vocation should be discerned before discerning the lay life. Discerning the religious life will lead you to your true vocation. If the scriptures speak to you and you feel drawn to marriage through them, go that way. One called to the religious life sees the words of Jesus "Come, follow me" "Drop what you are doing and come follow me," and do not dismiss it as hyperbole, but true advice.

I get recommended "monks chanting" from youtube all the time. Sadly, always the same generic service. But, this? This felt real. This felt like stumbling down a noisy street, then suddenly hearing a quiet from the side of a slightly open door. I peek inside and find exactly what I didn't know I was looking for. Life changed. The noise of cars and traffic ceased....and I was given a moment to feel not only an alignment with God, but with every brother wanting to praise and pray, "Fill my heart with your love, Oh Lord!"

@God's Servant...God's calling can be anything besides priesthood or religious life. you can be a politician that is honest, kind and have a platform in keeping of the teaching of the Catholic Church. You can be a husband, a father who keeps God in the center in yours and family life and instill that sense of purpose and humility in your kids, wife and everyone you come in contact with...maybe that is what God has called you to be.

Satan encourages us to live with regrets my brother. For the Lord, nothing is irredeemable. Pray and work for vocations - suggest it as an option to every young person you meet on your journey - and hold all of us in either solemn monastic vows or simple evangelical vows in your personal prayer. Never regret the day that the Lord has given you today. It is His gift, to be used and celebrated by you His servant for the blessing of this world

Wrong. Don't follow the pharasees; follow the Church of Jesus Christ in humble obedience.

the monks engage in manual work which I feel is useless in the current scenario they should be instead encouraged to take up pastoral work

The monks serve in many parishes in the area and in neighboring states. Currently eleven on the monks serve as pastors or chaplains on a full or part-time basis and many more help out in parishes regularly on weekends.

cris anto these monks engage in manual work. To earn money to provide for themselves. A lot of Abbeys, Monastery's, and Priory's make and sell things like fruit cake, honey, candles, Peanut brittle, even caskets etc. A small part of the proceeds go to the community for everyday needs. And allot of the money goes to the schools and parishes these holy men operate. They also generally have a lot of property too maintain. Perhaps if people like you spent a little less time criticizing them. And instead you donated some money to them they could do even more for humanity. Before you criticize these selfless men who gave up everything they owned. Including there freedom to make there own decisions by calling there work useless you should do some research before insulting them. These men take vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and sometimes stability. They deserve better from you. I will pray for your change of heart. May God bless you.

These monks also keep a seminary running that prepares priests for pastoral ministry. Their manual labor contributes to pastoral care in a significant way.
