Evening Amtrak intrigue at New Haven Union Station. 1/11/24

Ойын-сауық

After arriving from Springfield spent a few hours watching trains at New Haven, and Amtrak really put on an interesting show. You see a few trains arriving and departing including a Vermonter engine change and a surprise engine add on. I then had to catch a Metro North train to Bridgeport to catch the ferry back to Long Island.

Wow, lots of action at that time. Good to see how many there are, coming and going. Interesting to see the change of locomotives. Thank you very much.

I lived in New Haven about 25 years ago right when the electrification was extended to Boston. I remember going to Union Station often to see the engine changes (they only started electric service to Boston running two AEM-7 hauled trains a day, the rest were still swapped in New Haven). Never gets old seeing it, and at the same time it is a throwback. New Haven in my opinion is one of the great stations on the Northeast corridor and is among my top 5 favorites in that region.

Some place near that police car was the New Haven Tower. It was in service until sometime in the late 1990s or early 2000s, then torn down. I believe the old Fair Street Tower (on the east end) is still standing but not in service.

2008 was the last time I had taken the Vermonter train. Out of all my time taking the Vermonter train bypassing New Haven, I never saw a coach attach to the engines being swapped.

I have been told that Amtrak has or soon will order dual mode locomotives to eliminate time consuming and costly engine changes in places like Washington, D.C., Harrisburg, New York City, New Haven, Boston, etc.

Hi, can you take the train to Waterbury, CT and talk about the history of the railroads there? Also, can you talk about how new rail service can be implemented there (in the same video)?

New Haven is also a crew change point for Regionals and I believe the Vermonter.

Once they replace the ACS-64's there wouldn't be a need for an engine change at all. Not at New Haven, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
