A LOT of beautiful classic fire rigs in this scene. That ear-piercing howl of the Q siren as the ladder rig pulls out of the station is pure music!

There are probably multiple cuts of the movie, but in the version I know the firefighters have a small chat on the back of the truck: When they realise it is the glass tower, they voice their hope that the fire is on the second floor.

I see that all of these emergency service vehicles are responding to the glass tower in downtown San Francisco because I remember watching the towering Inferno back in the 80s when NBC used to air this movie back on Sunday evening because I remembered the scene when the security guard activated an alarm and switched the fire department all over the city were dispatched.

I like all that old Fire Equipment. The Engines are old open cab Seagraves, with the exception of the first one, which is an American LaFrance, plus, there's one old Ford Engine in there. The Truck Company is an old American LaFrance Tiller Truck. They sure don't make them like they used to.

The tiller is a Seagrave which was brand new at the time they shot the movie, not an ALF, they had a fleet of ALF Pioneer and 900 series tillers at the time (late 60s, early 70s) though.

A few problems with it. 1st there is no Station 4 in San Francisco. The station was closed about 10 years before this movie was out. It's now a home. 2nd the station they took off from is Station 38 which is located on California street about 2 miles from where the fire is. 3rd they sure took the scenic route to the fire. All in all I loved this movie as a kid and still do. Love the McQueen entrance skids right over the inch and half line!

I watched them film this. They were in North Beach and only came down California near Grant and down Kearney. I got chewed out by the director as I was getting in the way of the shot & he was annoyed by my questions. My girlfriend & I ate at a Hunan restaurant where the AMC dealership was as one of the engines passes it. That was on Broadway. I later went to Califonia & Kearney to be an extra in the bleachers and the dedication ceremony started.

PaulsPhotoService And it was NOT 2 miles from Broadway to the former Bank of America world headquarters building. About 12-14 blocks as they turn onto Broadway & go down to Columbus & turn onto Kearney in one shot and head down California at Grant to Kearney in another. I watched a lot of movies & tv bring filmed in SF as I lived there from 1964-1968 & 1970-1980. And I’ve walked that entire area dozens of times.

is there normally this many rigs in a second alarm dispatch or is it just because of it being a highrise? I love this movie i have it on my computer and i love the old open cab ALF's like the ones used in this.

Considering the size of the fire as well as the fact that it's a high rise involved, the response size seems to make sense. Years after this movie, the First Interstate Bank building in downtown Los Angeles had a fire that burned through 4 floors, and had a massive response to it involving over 300 firefighters. It is still the largest structure fire in Los Angeles history.

it was about average for Boston pre-10 Alarm implementation in 1980, even today you’d get and extra ladder, engine, and district chief on top of the normal 3 engines, two ladders, rescue company, tower ladder, district chief, and RIT engine, ladder, and district chief
