Honestly this is a part of history I would have never known about if it weren't for these videos
I used to look after a couple of UAX12s back in the 1960s. The GPO had ceased providing courses on them by then so I had to learn from the older engineers about them. I remember the switches being very heavy to take out. One of them was in a mobile caravan that was provided to temporally replace the exchange at Farley near Salisbury that had burnt down. Later an SAX (Small Automatic Exchange) was provided to replace the mobile UAX12. I think the one in the museum is a B unit rather than the slightly larger A unit and has been modified. I remember adjusting the vibrating relays that gave the ringing and tones...they were always a problem.
I'm really glad to see this old tech being preserved, especially by someone younger than myself! Good on you!
I love the telephone videos! I was a telecom tech for 30 years in the US and it's fascinating to see telecom equipment from other countries. Keep them coming! I'm just amazed at how you figure out how this "ancient" technology works! This system reminds me of a Stromberg Carlson 100 line X-Y system that I once worked on. 00 through 99 were the extensions but it didn't have access to the outside world.
Almost sounds like an old pinball machine! Wires and switches and relays. Oh my!!!
I absolutely love your telephone exchange videos. And the organ videos.
Glad your keeping the old tech alive and running ... worked on some of it in the past, but sadly removed / stripped out even more of it to be replaced by what then was deemed to be state of the art ... and what long since also has been superseded etc. Will definitely visit the museum for sure 👍
damn my father had an entire uax12 to run his old business' internal phone system. when the business was sold he sold it to a guy and that was like 40 years ago. however couple years ago he contacted my father and gave it back to him. bit awkward really cuz we have no where to put itso it just lives in the corridor inside the front door. its older than this though being from the 1930s.

@@THISMUSEUMISNOTOBSOLETE i mean its doing nothing in the hall and if you promiced to look after it well he'd probably part with it but idk. its a self contained unit of like 5 or 6 of those racks..
The way you work in joy always embiggens my heart. Photostat is the pre-1960s word you're looking for instead of fax or photocopy.
I always learn so much from you videos Sam 👍 from another telephone collectors 😊
I actually find the telephone videos highly interesting!
I love that transformer hum.
Like the phone videos, like the old organ even though I'm not a musical guy.
All your content is super fascinating, not just the synths. I loved calling to the telephone system, brought me right back to the early nineties. :)
Yes remember seeing the grey cans at Gt Yarmouth (Norfolk) disused exchange years ago. Very rare. I've fitted those power units on House Exchange System 4 2+10's. Great video enjoyed it very much.
I love the Strowger switch system! I think the mechanical complexity is so fascinating. Working with a mechanical exchange means you need to really understand how a call needs to be routed. I think you're going to have a lot of fun with your new acquisition/toy!
I'm not super into telephones, but that somebody (or anybody) is super into them is just fantastic.
I like these for the same reason I like looking at old pinball machine innards..
Good to see you back with great content. I love how eclectic your content is.
Amazing sam
Awesome stuff. I love seeing the relais and switches at work. It's like the electro version of a steam train. :)
Would love to see you do a cover of Wichita Lineman! I hope to visit the museum early next year.
Cool Stuff
Crack on with the exchange gear videos Sam...where else can a chap be fascinated by archaic electronic doohickeys?😁👍
Dude you always give great content, and as like myself, you have many projects, things take time , your loyal subscribers will wait for your content, Thankyou for your time and effort in giving us this content to watch, cheers dude keep up the great work 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The reason you can't use 1 is so you can't ask the operator to connect you (100) With modern systems you can stop certain numbers callin0 or 1, but allow the boss or his secretary to do so, not sure if that's true on your unit.
Great work dude.
Looking forward to the SQ-10 feature. It's the sequencer I use with my eurorack and it is indeed, awesome.
Reverse Phone Phreaking! Love it!
How do you find enough time in the day to do all this awesome stuff?! What is your sleep schedule like?
i had to calculate the traffic in erlang in such devices in uni
Outro music is 🔥 haha love it
For the outgoing line, how does it handle 999?
I wouldnt know where to start trying to suss these things out, impressed. How come it requires negative voltage ? The fuses that were blowing could possibly be down to filter capacitors reforming
Great video, interesting stuff. What's not to like about anything electro mechanical?
Test number, inverted ring tone means all is well, number unavailable tone equals fault.
I remember when I was a kid and dialing a friend's number wrong discovering I got some weird tones and sounds and playing around with various number combinations just out of curiosity, wondering now if something I heard was one of these tones.
You night not have thought of this but this exchange looks a bit close to the racks on the side. If at all possible you should make sure there is ample space for wheelchairs so the museum can remain accessible for more people.

its fine. minimuim distance of 90cm for corridoors and doorways so accessible
Any makers' marks on those switches?
Have you got any reed relay gear? When I first worked for STC there was a lot of TXE4 stuff still in production.
Heres a wierd fact alot exchanges had closed network which was housed in a separate cabinet with an 1/5 inch conduit " snorkel " coming out the top .It was designed apparently for if the exchanged was damaged this system would still work.

So if it only has two line finders and two switches, does that mean the whole thing can only manage two simultaneous calls?
