    I learned the hard way how devastating it is when someone breaks the sanctity of the queue. I was stood politely, the next in line for the self-service till at the supermarket, and an older woman blithely walks to the till I was about to make use of. I tutted to no avail, I took a breath sharply, audibly and I even cleared my throat with a muttered grumble. No response, no acknowledgement, no shame. I was so distressed I nearly fainted like an upper class Victorian lady. Years later and I'm still incensed at the very thought of it.

    As a former UK plumber. I can confirm that most houses these days are plumbed up in modern ways so mixers would be compatible. It is also because, for some strange reason. When you ask what type of tapes do you want on your bathroom sink. The sane people will ask for mixers all around. But the traditionalists will say they want Hot and Cold on the basins because it just looks right. Some people here are just stubborn and want the stink that you want a mixer on the most. To have 2 taps on the British way. Maybe it's seeing 1 tap in the middle reminds them of foreign bathrooms or public toilets. I could never get my head around it. 🤷

    @DubhghlasMacDubhghlas

    @@magnemoe1 it is due to them using boilers which is on the way out in the UK and water heaters on the rise. If you have water heaters the hot water line is potable water aka drinking water. And if 3 mm a part one side will be burning hot the other side cold. Best thing to do is get rid of the boiler and go with hot water heater and get a regular mix tap like most of the world has.

The speed of this interaction is dependant on walking speed but generally lasts about 5 seconds. I have a friend who is Danish, who thinks this is so disingenuous because we aren't actually interested in how the other person is, otherwise we would stop and talk to them. As Brits, we know this but it is just polite to acknowledge someone you know. I asked them what they do in that situation and they said they just say hi. Shocking!!

If you go on to the platform you will see marks where each of the doors should open. If you are on the Waterloo platform between about 07:30 and 09:30 'city gents' (Bowler Hats and Umbrellas) queue at these marks at about 45 degree angle to the platform edge, I have seen this behaviour from 1972 until about 2000, not the whole time but on many occasions, that is when I was there. Not sure if it still happens, but can't think why it would have stopped. By the way I agree with your comment about bar queuing, except at theatre bars, note it is best to order before the show for the interval, if you can, these drinks are normally set up at a side table (or similar).

My friend thinks it's fine to hold a spot for me, but I don't want to skip anywhere into the queue. I always get in at the back. My friends are upset but I don't want to skip! But I don't know if there are actual rules for queueing here in Norway. We have mixed taps. We still have hot water boilers and we should not drink the hot water, but it's fine to drink the cold water. Norwegian tap water is so good, we export it in Voss bottles. I lived in Florida for a year to work at Epcot, and I had to double filter the tap water to remove the chlorine smell. I pity Floridians.

    There's a few things about being in a British que that is up to the person at the end. You have every right to allow someone to go In front of yourself if you choose. If you are the last in line and the person in front of you needs to pop to an isle for a minute to get something they forgot then you can 'hold their place in line' so they can get the item without loosing their place. If they say "I'll be back in a minute" you have every right to look at your watch. You can and it's polite to do so, let the elderly in front of you if they don't have a trolley full of shopping. If they do then you go as quickly as possible and offer to assist them. Qing for a bus. British bus stops usually have some for of shelter to keep the 476 types of rain off people. This is a place the accidental qué jumping happens because of the many ways of entering and exiting the shelter. It is also a place where the elderly should be allowed to alight the bus first. The cheese / meat / fish counter in a shop. Double check to see if there is a ticket dispenser, if there is take one until it is your turn. If there isn't one take note of who was there before you and wait your turn. If there's two of you that don't know who's next then offer the turn to the other person, it's just good manners. There's so much more to the rules, there's so many ways to spell it, but it's not to be taken as a joke as many a fight has happened in drinking establishments over pushing in front. 🤔

    The cold tap is connected directly to the mains supply. If it's new, it will be filtered too. And because nearly everyone now has a "new" combi-boiler in their house, the "hot tap" is there to only heat the water as and when you need it - The problem with a mix tap is that anything that goes through the boiler, also mixes with the supposedly clean drinking taps - and unless you have proper filters on the taps themselves, this is how you can end up with gall and kidney stones over long periods of time, calcified water in kettles and washing machines, and in America specifically, increased lead supply.... Mix taps in the UK do have separate supplies, and they are mixed from the 2 different sources in the tap itself, which mitigates some of these problems, but the over-abundance of heated differing metals, the copper and aluminium and in a lot of case going through steel at some point too - drinking water from a mixed tap without filtering before or after (a simple brita style filter is fine) is basically a health hazard. Note - cooking with this same water that hasn't either come straight from the mains or been filter doesn't "boil away" the metals and filings that would be present.... That's why we have 2 separate taps, and yes, your mix tap in the UK WILL be fed from 2 different sources, as the boiler you use is also ran from the mains (obviously), when you need work done, or whatever, turning it off from the source with just one maintenance tap makes everything just much easier and blah blah blah - until you've done some plumbing yourself, some of this shit isn't self-explanatory, so I apologise for my long-winded explanation 😅

    I might be slightly pissed and I might have dropped my phone, but I haven't even lost the head of my pint. Who I meant to say was, I can't believe you didn't remember the "sack the juggler" shout when someone's dropped a glass. Pub classic, always the most intelligent alpha who does it first. *Burp*

    When you strap something on the back of a pickup in the US you have to say "that's not going anywhere." And in the Midwest US, when you are done with a conversation/hang out, you slap your knee and say "whelp" and if it doesn't work the first time, then 30 minutes later you give a "whelp, I gotta get out of here" and then stand up.

    I have really come to appreciate cueing in Spain. When you approuch you ask who is last and the group or individual tells you who is last. Next you find a comfortable place to sit or stand in the area and when it is your turn you go. If anyone attempts to go out of order the entire group jumps to the defense of the person who is rightfully next. Because we are willing to verbalize the situation keep the order in their memories it does not require the phisical line and allows the elderly to sit on a bench in the shade or people to stand chatting with friends all with a strict adherence to the order of service.

    I grew up on a farm in the US, and the sink we washed at after working outside had separate hot and cold taps. We actually used a basin to mix the hot and cold water for washing. 🙂

    So I had to look it up. No, ostriches are not native to Australia. Yes, you can still find ostriches in Australia. They were brought in around 1800 for farming purposes, and I guess for pets, but apparently many were released over the years when the farming or carrying for them got hard. Apparently you can still find some wild ones in southern Australia. The more you know.

    I remember, when I was a kid, asking my dad one Father's Day why there was no Children's Day. His response (given in his best "go away, you're bothering me" voice): "Son, EVERY day is Children's Day."
