After all these years, Lara Fabian is still the best performer on the planet. Truly a unique legend.

“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973. This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …). When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours. The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes. Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad. But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s. At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet during is own Paris concert in January 1995. It was a triumph. So he sat in a front row seat and asked her to sing it again alone. Lara also had made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power. Serge and Lara became good friends and performed several other duets later on. The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella. There's a reason why Lara is one of Dimash's idols while growing up, and why she inspired so many other upcoming artists. Nobody can make you FEEL emotion like Lara can. Believe it or not, this was a cover. And it would take a lot of courage to cover a song after Lara sings it! Dimash did cover several of her songs (not shocking!), including Adagio, Mademoiselle Hyde, Love is like a dream, etc. Despite that Lara is close to the end of her multi-decades career, he sang with her several duets. As you dig deep into this amazing artist, make sure you select her live performances. She absolutely kills in those, which is very unusual as most other artists sound better once the studio has "fixed" their performance!

More information on Lara Fabian: Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, .... In my personal opinion, she is even the best. There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register. So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence: • she speaks 2 languages natively (french, italian), and 2 others fluently (english, spanish), can speak a bit of dutch (and sicilian), and understand quite well russian and portuguese. She has sung in 12 languages in total • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for most her songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music with the composer. • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens. A quick background on her and her career: She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( her grandfather is from Detroit). She was raised in sicilia first then in Belgium so she speaks both italian and french as native languages. She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory. Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US. But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan. Thank you! This is amazing. I only found her about 4 years ago through vocal coach reactions and I’m addicted to finding new reactors hear her for the first time. I knew some of what you outlined, but I had no clue about Sony and Celine. It bothers me when reactors compare her mixed voice with Celine because they aren’t comparing the sound, it’s the pronunciation and vowel modification inherent to native French speakers. Not only was Lara robbed, but so were all the people living in the US listening to the Titanic song ad nauseum. There was room for Lara on the charts!!!

@@L0C0vision Canadian French sounds a lot different from the French French, especially the spoken versions. When sung it imight be less noticable. The first time I heard Canadian French was Lucille Star I suppose with Quand le soleil dit bonjour aux montagnes.

Lara is technically perfect. Sells a song better than anyone I've ever seen. She is top of my list of singers I'd love to see live....... I imagine it would be unforgettable.

Lara didn't write this song but certainly looks and sounds like she feels it to her very soul. I recommend you check out Broken Vow, a song she co-wrote after experiencing a terrible betrayal. She performed it in the same concert as Je Suis Malade. It's heartbreaking.

Serge Lama wrote this song in 1973 . And the dramatic strenght comes from "Like when my mother went out one evening And she left me alone with my despair" It rings a bell in anybody's human mind. Yes it firstly was written by a man for a man.

A sensitive reaction to Lara Fabian's renowned cover of Je Suis Malade. Thanks. She has a lovely voice to go with her famed interpretation skills. Another excellent cover of this challenging song is Forestella's. You should see how a male South Korean male quartet interprets this song and brings some audience members (and some reactors) to tears. A brilliant crossover group, with harmonies to die for.

Maddy, I have watched this performance nearly 20 times and it always gets me misty. All I want to do is wrap my arms around her and tell her that she deserves better. When I read the words in English here is the thought I have - "this is pretty poison. Her words are sick - she is obsessive, possessive, desperate. These are the very words that come from the mouth of a pathologically, psychologically sick person. But I I say - very pretty in melody and voice in the French. If any woman said those things to me I would run from her like my hair was on fire. I would rightfully be fearful of her stalking me.
