Even BIGGER "200W" COB LED panel tests.

Ғылым және технология

If I thought the COB LED panel was big the last time, then this is now officially the biggest I've ever seen. It's based on a solid panel of aluminium with a PCB layer laminated on. The COB aspect (Chips On Board) indicates the way the bare LED chips are bonded directly to the PCB layer and bond wires attached between the chip contacts and the PCB. The board has a dam of silicone piped round the desired outline and is then flooded with a layer of phosphor loaded silicone gel to protect the LEDs and convert the blue light from the chips to white.
This panel has a massive 600 LED chips on it in a 30 by 20 array.
The LEDs are wired in rows of 30 parallel chips in series groups of four rows to make up the desired 12V rating. There's no current limiting so any voltage fluctuation will result in wide intensity variation and any cable resistance will have an effect on the current through the panel.
The LEDs are not well matched on this panel so there will be a wide current difference between the chips and it could damage them if run at high current.
The PCB bus bars are arranged to provide as equal a resistive path to all LEDs as possible to ensure that track resistance does not cause an intensity variation.

Clive ... interesting video . Perhaps it would be possible to access the individual sections and use a current regulator on each one . This would be a practical way to avoid the high cost of a prime quality unit . Also , would a polarizing filter on the lens help with the glare ? Edit : I see that smaller strip style units are available , perhaps these would be better for current regulator assemblies ... provided that the mismatch of the leds on each panel is not too great .

Or if they make one with the backing the same size as the emitter element, so you can seamlessly array them. Replace the backing element with one that has built in fins or some form of heat sink mountings, and make all electrical connections on the back. Mounting would also be done from the edges or the back side. (None of those edge tracks as they are doing with them now.) Then the size would be limited by how many in the array you could drive. This would also allow you to make different shapes depending on how you tile them.

There are filters photographers use to eliminate glare and reflections.. it’s not an ND filter or if filter but I believe a polarizing filter.. you just rotate them until it blocks the light you want eliminated and is used in shooting cars or water or really anything shiney and would be perfect when used in conjunction with your ring light here!!! Awesome stuff and new sub!

9:33 Why do they run those sideways links between individual LEDs instead of just keeping each string of 4 isolated? I guess the shorting current is being spread across all 30 strings in parallel instead of passing through just the one string you shorted - so the short is less likely to blow the whole string. Also you can drill holes anywhere and strings sort of keep going thanks to the redundancy of the sideways links.... However it makes the array less uniform since you no longer get the forward voltage averaging effect of grouping strings of LEDs together. Now the Vf of all 30 LEDs in parallel has to exactly match otherwise you get a non uniform illumination...

  • @SebBrosig
    @SebBrosig6 жыл бұрын

You were insinuating that these may be factory rejects, that is, somewhere else you can buy these with all beautifully matched LEDs at a much higher price, and you can run those at or near the 200W. But running LEDs well below their maximum design power is well worth it in terms of Lumen/W so surely, buying one of these could actually make economical sense, given the low £/LED.

  • @fishyerik

Actually a common "12V" lead-acid car battery is slightly less than 14V without load, when in good shape and fully charged. If you pull 200W from it, the voltage will quickly drop, and the actual wattage through that cob connected to car battery will probably fall well below 100W within a few seconds as it needed 12.61V to pull 5.06 amps.

I would be interested to see what the current draw is if the weedy thin cables are replaced with big chunky ones - presumably it would then just be limited by the (thin?) tracks on the PCB. I'd also like to see what happens if it's suitably heat-sinked and run at 14.7v (i.e. 12v bulk charge voltage) for a while - does it pull 200W? Does it explode in a huge ball of plasma? Finally, say I do want to plug it into a battery - what's the best (cheapest/safest) way of limiting the current to something sensible?

You could use a few 1 ohm resistors either in series or parallel depending on how bright you wanted it, but they would possibly get hot.

Clive, I'm building a photo booth and I'm wondering if you could test the following. What is the time from 0 to 200 Watt startup time and how hot does it get when it's on for 4 seconds without heatsink. Also is there a difference in startup time with DC cobleds and the 220v AC versions?

Just had a look at your 50W driverless COB teardown. I need to build it from a CC driven COB led to eliminate flicker. I'm guessing for the brief time it's on, temperature will not be an issue. Thanks for the best electronics chanel on youtube Clive!

It would actually be interesting to see that panel slapped across a fully-charged lead acid battery or a power supply of the same voltage. Make sure to collect all the magic smoke so you can put it back in, though.

A fully charged lead acid battery will be ~12.6V at rest (which Clive got up to in the video, see 13:39). Just off the charger it'd be a bit higher, but should drop down fast to 12.6 as soon as you start to draw any significant current. Now, 14.4 from a running car w/ proper charging, using decently thick leads, might be into smoke signalling territory tho :-)

I've got 72 2V (Enersys Powersafe DDmP 125-33s) batteries rated 2000Ah each available for testing at work. If that's too much, 48 rated @ 1600Ah as well.

Now come on Clive, that's not fair! You know how long shipping takes from China, the 70W one hasn't even arrived yet! Somewhat glad the larger one is poor, I'll put the 70W one on a heatsink with a DC/DC and makita battery holder so I have a mobile worklight.
