EV MG4 - The New & Improved Look | Fifth Gear
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
MG have been making competent, yet rather dull looking, cars for a number of years now. But the all-electric MG4 signals a massive makeover for the company, because it’s sleek and stylish. The EV range is good to, and it’s also meant to offer a sporty drive. Could this car be about to throw down a massive challenge to the likes of VW’s ID.3?

I have got a MG4 Long Range (without Trophy) since 9 months and 19.000 km. Besides a lot of nervy minor software bugs which will hopefully be fixed soon, I really can recommend this car. The workmanship is really good. The best highlight was a 5-day holiday from southern Germany (south Bavaria) to the northern part of Italy (South-Tirol) by passing several 2000 m high passes of the Alps. Recuperation really works great. 2100 m height battery level was 47%, and 45 minutes later (350 m height) battery level was 54%, average consumption was 12,3 kWh/100 km (only a few fast Autobahn sections) from Munich (Bavaria) to Meran (South-Tirol). The car with its low center of gravity and very good motorization (204 hp rear wheel drive) makes really fun. I never had such fun when driving through alpine passes, it really makes addictive. I do not need a bigger and/or more expensive electric car to have fun, my childs too.
The MG4 XPower is out now at £35,000 0-60mph 3.8 seconds, cheaper than any supercar.

Entry level MG4 is the best 2nd car you can get in an EV Tesla is better value as a first car Needed to get my thoughts down as I am really not sure people are comparing apples with apples Really trying not to be a Tesla fan boy becuase I want the whole market competing on EV but we are just not there yet. (but almost) Close, but I think the next 2 years might level the playing field unless Tesla have already gotten too much of a head start on It seems seems like all the reviewers are desperate to love the MG4 And I actually like it and would probably go out an buy one tomorrow, but it would only be the entry level And here are the reasons, I would really want to pony up to get the Tesla 3 Features Entry level MG only has 350km range vs Tesla 2 at 513km The tesla has better tech , better charging options Everything above base model MG4, has the older battery tech Only the Tesla and the bottom of the range MG have lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery LFP batteries are lighter, charge faster and are not as toxic as cobalt oxide or manganese oxide Lithium batteries Note, the only drawback this battery has seems to be that they do not perform as well in the cold, but not a problem for me here Qld Australia. No storage in the front under the bonnet for the MG Less storage in the trunk for the MG The safety features and software appear to be mor polished in the Tesla Resale If the purpose is to be a shopping trolley and charge from home, and a longer warranty, I think the entry level MG is a really good option But I work as a rep and it seems like the Tesla will be a no brainer based on the feature set. I am just saying, by the time you get closer in a spec to spec comparison, the MG comes up a bit short But I still like it :) Pricing MG Australia website EXCITE 51 FROM $41,197 359km Excite 64 FROM $47,317 450km Essence 64 FROM $50,377 435kmn Long Range 77 FROM $58,537 530km Tesla 3 from $61900 513km Charging Superchargers can add up to 275 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes It takes 38 minutes to charge the MG4 on a 150kW charger to get from 10% to 80% So my point is, if you are going to charge from home all the time, it probably does not matter, but its worth knowing as everyone seems obsessed with how long they will have to wait while charging.... Its just hard to recommend the any MG except the entry level based on longer warranty and the initial purchase savings of the entry level model. Does that mean its the great 2nd car argument based only on price? OK So now it's time for everyone to attack me Cmon haters.....(Remembering that I actually like the MG4) :)

By the time it enters the affordable second hand market of £5,000 there is a strong possibility the battery will no longer be as useful making the car a write off.
@sailingoctopus1
Жыл бұрын
Nonsense, the entry-level SE SR has LFP batteries that can last up to 5,000 cycles before dropping below 80% of original capacity, so, based on the WLTP range, could theoretically do over a million miles (218x5000) and still have a range of 174 miles (80% of 218). Based on current prices for LFP batteries, which have fallen dramatically over the last ten years, it would cost about £8,000 to replace the 51kWh battery, so comparable with replacing a combustion engine, so if the battery did need to be replaced then the car would not be a write-off, unless technology had moved on so much that it was better value to buy a new car, which after a million miles seems likely. The Long Range models have NCM batteries, which are less robust and not as long-lived, but should theoretically still last half a million WLTP miles, although they would be more expensive to replace.

218 miles? Even at 281 miles it'll take 3 days to get from Melbourne to Sydney fir an 8 hr trip, Perth to Sydney 2500 miles taking in charge time it would take a week for a 40 hr trip. EV's are Bloody useless here in Aus.
@sailingoctopus1
Жыл бұрын
Perth to Sydney is hardly a typical use case, but let's look at it. At 60 miles an hour, that's 42 hours of driving, whatever car you are driving. I know that in Oz you do things differently, but no one can drive for 42 hours without overnight stops. Realistically, that's three overnight stops in any car. Let's assume you start with a full 'tank' and fully 'refuel' at each of the overnight stops, whatever car you are driving. If you were driving an MG4 Extended Range, which has a WLTP range of 326 miles, this means that you would complete 1324 miles (4x326) with absolutely no charging penalty. It takes 35 minutes to add 230 miles of range (from 10% to 80%) in the MG4 Extended Range, so you would need to stop to recharge five times (assuming rapid charging points are nearly perfectly placed) at 35 minutes each, so a total of 175 minutes charging time (5x35) to cover the remaining 1,176 miles (2,500 - 1,324), during which you can stretch your legs, have a pee and a bite to eat. In a combustion car, let's assume you have a steel bladder and don't mind eating while you pee and let's assume your car can do 460 miles between stops (twice the range of the MG4) then you will be able to complete the remaining 1,176 miles with only three fifteen minute stops (460x3), so a total of 45 minutes refuelling. From this, we can see that the charging penalty suffered by the MG4 would be two hours ten minutes. Nothing like the penalty you suggest. I put it to you, that on arrival at Sydney in an EV you would feel much more refreshed, partly because EVs are so much more quiet and relaxing to drive, but also because those additional two hours ten minutes of respite are time well spent. I'm sure the necessary charging infrastructure between Perth and Sydney is not yet there to make the EV journey quite as trouble free as I imply, but in five years time I suspect you would rather make that journey in an EV.
