EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2022 • Behind the Scenes • Lighting & Stage Design, Audio

With the Eurovision 2022 in Turin, the broadcaster RAI inspired millions worldwide with its impressive stage and high-quality sound. EventElevator had the great opportunity to talk to some of the technical companies involved in this massive tv show production: Paolo Marcuzzi from sound d-light explains exciting details about the latest lighting equipment. His company, together with Calvini Light equipment service, installed nearly 3,000 light fixtures in the beautiful Pala Alpitour arena. Madrix Specialist Claudio Cianfoni reveals some infos about the massive pixel mapping effects that enlivened the show experience. Alfredo de Luca from Atelier Francesca Montinaro explains the special design language behind the set design with the exciting kinetic sun at the centre. Alessio Comuzzi was part of the Agorà team, which took over the field of audio production this year. He explains the challenges behind getting the sound to „record release level“. This year, of course, the Riedel team again took care of the signal distribution and complete intercom solutions throughout the big halls. Part of this is, of course, to equip also the many commentator boxes with technology so that the speakers can do their job smoothly. Jakob Refer from Riedel explains the technology behind the Riedel CCP-1116 Commentary Panels and the importance of having a perfect support team for the working commentators from all over Europe.
Of course, other companies were also involved. The STS team took care of the video technology for the led walls and floors, and Ampco Flashlight took over the work with the CyberHoist motion control system for the different light curtains. The TV truck came from NEP, special camera's/grip from Opertec (Ukraine).

    I really appreciate how much work an thinking went into the stage design, I didn’t know that 👏🏼 However, the stage seems quite cobbled together as if someone tried to combine all of Italy’s characteristics. I guess a more minimalistic approach like at the last year’s Eurovision in the Netherlands, would have looked way better and not as incoherent as this year’s stage.

    I think it's extraordinarily difficult to design an ESC stage. In the best case, you only offer a rather elegant and minimalistic framing for the around 40 performances, which should all be super individual. You're right, strong Italian trademark looks were also incorporated in Turin. But that's the ingenious thing about the ESC, that there are new tendencies every time. It was really courageous to integrate water elements again after a long time, they looked really cool in the camera. The mega light curtains have also come down very far. For example at the Måneskin performance this year - that was a phat stage look and the chorography was bomb. Unfortunately, the singer was injured, so he couldn't rock like usual.

    @@jovytas6989 If the performer is a real total performer, they can manage the show even without massive effects. This year had lot of new things to the eyes of televiewers compared to usual cartonized animation stage. I just want to say that 2022 is holding the show of the new decade, gained more figures than to 2021, means only great show can earn higher figures.

    @@jovytas6989 Using the word disgusting on the very huge work done by the stage designer, RAI, and the production, is just incredible. The only disgusting comment it's your. There was an underestimation on the time required to turn the concentric arches by 180°. Of course it was a mistake. But there were lots of other innovations and the lighting was fantastic. Criticize the work of other people when not knowing the difficulty of the organization of a complex show like ESC just qualifies you. Writing critics from behind a mobile phone or a computer it's easier.

    When I heard that Francesca Montinaro would design this year contest's stage, I was so excited. I knew that there would be something special and kinetic on the stage and I love the idea of the Kinetic Sun. Diodato's performance with the sun working was magnificent and this video just gives me more looks of the sun and I love it. It's such a pity that the EBU and RAI could not give a solution to feature more of the sun to the show. I'm waiting for more standing rehearsal to leak to see how some performances should have looked like with the sun, but it seems it would take forever.

    This year's design by Francesca Montinaro was really a different approach to the many stages from the Wieder Design studio. Sure, the setup in Rotterdam last year was hard to top, especially the pretty cool integration of the B-Stage for more variability was brilliant in 2021. In addition to the main stage look, this made many nice camera angles possible. The kinetic sun this year was of course a super courageous, expressive way that had a very strong and intense effect on the visitors in the arena. That 200 GLP KNV Cubes really had steam together in the heart, yea!

    Wonderful video. As Italian I am proud of what RAI has done. Yeah, it was not perfect, the kinetic sun stuck on one side during the performances, some camera mistakes, etc. But the amount of technology RAI and the usual partners of Eurovision, like Riedel, Ampco, Opertec, NEP, has put on that stage and that arena, are not second to any other previous edition. The stage was something different. When you change it's a risk. Life is a risk. But the sun has shown its potential during the interval acts. It was like a stargate, a door to the Nth dimension. Well done Francesca and the stage design team.

    You're right. The Kinetic Sun was just a wonderful key element that will definitely be remembered for years to come. Even in its static position it was a very cool eye catcher. The impact on the audience and also on camera was very involving. It is always exciting to follow the different approaches of the organizing countries - artistically and technically. This is what makes the EUROVISION so special, because each country adds its own special twist to the production.

  • @Paolo3480

    Yeah. Unfortunately standard users non used to design, want a flat ledwall and that's it. But knowing that Francesca declared her most preferred stage design was Liabon 2018, so she based her design on a double faced "prop", the kinetic sun, with LED on one side and animated lights on the other. It was probably too advanced for the standard spectator and for 40 seconds changeovers.

  • @Aviertje

    @Aviertje

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Paolo3480 I don't think that people necessarily want a flat LED wall or hate anything different from a flat LED wall, but that the dislike of the kinetic sun (beyond the non-working aspects) is that it was essentially the 'elephant in the room'. It took up a lot of space while being very much 'present', yet was difficult to include in the acts themselves while obscuring or at the very least detracting from whatever people wanted to accomplish using the LED wall/screen that is so much more visible to the crowd and viewers than just the performers themselves during anything other than the upclose camera shots. It was a daring approach to try out, but I think future designs ought to learn from this by making sure the desire for innovative design and scenery doesn't try to steal the limelight from the performers themselves. Shape the stage interesting ways (the '00s had some very interesting stages IIRC), do inventive things with the backdrop perhaps, but not a huge thing that feels like it is in the center of the stage.

  • @Paolo3480

    @Paolo3480

    @@Aviertje If the sun was rotating in 5 seconds (impossible due to its complexity) each delegation could benefit from the ledwall side as it was in previous editions. The stage was big enough. You don't need to have a rodeo on that stage. Unfortunately the 40 seconds required to turn the sun were the same 40 seconds EBU wanted the postcard to last. It was impossible to find a solution.

    Great video as always! What I found interesting while watching is that to me the image/lighting seemed weirdly sterile, if that is the correct way to describe it. I cannot even make out why it seems that way, if I had to guess it might have something to do with the color temperature of the white lights, haze, or cameras used. I've seen that with a few live TV show productions from southern and eastern europe, so it might just be a different regional approach, but that stood out for me. Not even in that it was bad, but I found it noticeable.

    @@olli2591That's hilarious, the difference in quality stark, the technical competence of the BBC is clearly evident in the final production. I feel deeply sorry for the Italian team, nobody wanted a giant dead LED sun blotting the visuals, but prior planning should have uncovered the technical defects. This is not amateur hour, it's the biggest entertainment show on earth.

    To be honest it feels way too many lights, that make it very messy. Clearly a volume/size vs quality and smart.

    Very creative but I think too much, would prefer a more simple design, no water ! Shame the set did not operate as envisioned and that cameras were faulty.

    So obviously they've put so much love into this stage and the lightning I see is just beautiful but then countries like Finland were practically left to perform in the dark. Why? :/

    The song contest in italy was a drama, technically it was a mess. This was the worst edition ever. Bad camera work, bad sound and light. The stage that doesn't work properly, bad host, all in all a drama edition. How proud I am of the Netherlands, what they have achieved in 2021 was a high-quality edition.

    Bad hosts? Do you mean the plastic expressionless hosts of Rotterdam, were better? Come on, I understand a bit of nationalism, but when it's too much, is starts to be annoying.

    I can agree with the bad camera work but, bad host, bad sound? You mean that the plastic dolls hosting in Rotterdam were better? C'mon, it was a very good show but with flaws too. Be real

    You are right to be proud, it was a beautiful edition. But don't write badly about other editions to be proud of your national edition. Sambuca is good but should not be abused

    El diseño inicial del escenario era prometedor, pero que mala ejecución echó andar la Rai y ese equipo que se consiguieron, demasiado amateur e improvisado y si que se notó en pantalla, sobre todo por la falla en el movimiento del sol, los terribles ángulos de camara, las horribles post cards, el sucio piso de pantalla led del escenario y esa fuente tan fuera de lugar, definitivamente fue demasiado 😂

    compared to the other stages yes but just because the arches did not turn does not mean that the stage did not work at 100% and consequently it is not that it does not work if you can't see beyond the black arches you have vision problems

    You will if you work hard and make the EUROVISION stops in your country ;-) You're right, it's always fascinating to see the Star Trek-esque FOH area there on site. Must be fun operating such a big ship.
