    I went from Berlin to Budapest with this train this may, it was very comfortable in a 4 person couchette alone. Definitly better than a flight, arrives in the best possible time in both directions.

    Fantastic video as usual. I particularly love the implied cosiness of a train gliding across the Berlin cityscape on a cold winter's night at c. 30 mph/50kph. It's a pity that Ireland is too small and that our trains are too fast to justify "sleeper" trains.

    I took a EN train from Stuttgart to Budespest-Keleti on May 4, 2023 in a sleeper compartment. Booked for 109 Euros in a 3-bed configuration ( ALL COMPARTMENTS HAVE 3 BEDS BY THE WAY). As it was in the middle of the week, I had this compartment all for myself. Single occupancy would have cost me 70 Euros more. Be smart. travel on wednesday. What was the worst thing? Shower didn´t work, they locked the whole unit. But the sink was very usefull for washing, so no problem.

    Great video as always :D That train is a kind of a mishmash of German, Polish, Czech nad Hungarian cars, which in my opinion shows how the national carriers think about passengers and the trip quality. What I`m talking about? Let`s look for example to the windows - as you mentioned the MAV START cars don`t have openable windows which is really strange, even if we treat those cars as sealed cars (despite the fact that they are not sealed). On the other hand we have Polish cars which are the top notch of the european sleeping cars and they have tilting upper part of the window to allow ventilation if the AC dosen`t work. Strange decision in the MAV START headquarters and the car manufacturer that offered that kind of solution. But what is really concerning me about that train is that we have been talking about interoperability for many years but as we can see it is only partial. The Siemens EuroSprinter from our national carrier (PKP IC) is used only from Germany to the Bohumin. Why it dose not lead the consit up to Breclav? It is equiped with PZB, SHP and MIREL national ATPs. I think that it might be connected to the scheduled circuits of the particular locomotive but it is quite strange that we have to use 2 or 3 locomotives during that trip. And that shunting "episodes" of that trip... As a rail engineer, I think that despite Wrocław, they are overthinked in my opinion... P.S. 22:17 vs. 27:41 - That ČD 380 might had a close contact with an animal :/

    Good point and the thing with PZB it's used by ÖBB to permit through running on Deutsche Bahn tracks. That way EU44 Huzarz stays down to Wien Hbf/Graz with while CD380 runs the Metropol Berlin Budapest Keleti section from Breclav (On Older Austria Hungary Documents the route is listed as Berlin Breslau German Empire Oderburg Lundenburg/Wien Budapest Keleti). The Polish Sleeper coaches are SUW2000 axles equipped that way when not needed to run Berlin Hbf it can run to Kyiv via Lviv & Premzyl

  • @KUBUTECH911

    @KUBUTECH911

    @@EpicThe112 Hi, first of all, the city name "Breslau" is not connected to Breclav, but Wrocław in Poland. That is the German name of that city. Secondly, Sleeper coaches with SUW200 bogeys are not in use anymore due to the safety failures and few constrution mistakes which were made. The main problem with the mentioned situation is that Polish Siemens ES64U4-D "EU44" Husarz (not Huzar/Huzarz) locomotives, which can leaglly operate on PKP PLK, DB Netz, OBB, ZSSK, SŽ rail networks, are not used on a complete route from Berlin to Graz, even if they technically could be. They lead the NightJet train from Berlin Hbf. to Wrocław, where the NJ part to Przemyśl is disconnected and one of the Polish locomotives (EP07, EP08 or EP09) pulls the wagons to Przemyśl, but then EU44 goes only to Bohumin, where it is changed to CD 362 and then in Breclav "362" is swaped with CD 380 (part to Budapest) and OBB 1216 (part to Graz)...

    Taking this train is a wonderful oportunity to compare services. Easiest way to buy a ticket was at MAV. On board, things changes. I took this train these days from Berlin to Budapest and back and booked a single compartment sleepign car both ways. When I thought, the waggon was shabby on my outbound trip, it was even worse on the return trip. Outbound at least one toilet (of two) functioned well, inbound both of them weren´t. Disgusting! My cabin inbound was even in a messier state than outbound. As you can see in this video, cars from other companies are added. That is why I visited the ÖBB couchette waggon, which is somehow a lower class than a sleeping car, yet was in an excellent shape, not to mention that even there the WC has a shower (whereas at MAV you could not even wash hands in any toilet), and the ÖBB staff was in service modus, whereas the MAV staff already changed into private modus when passing the polish/german border. The rate for those trips would be the same, the standards are very very different, that is why am reallly annoyed with MAV. Also keep in mind the differing standards of the networks. In Germany you wont hear or feel much. In Poland it is not a subject, too. Things changes in Slovakia and are continued in Hungaria. The ride in the last mentiond countries is bumpy and can get on your nerves,

    The MÁV sleeper trains my not be the most luxurious ones, but they can get your from Stuttgart to Budapest for only 50€ while you sleep in a 6 berth couchette. It's pretty much hop on, have a drink and snack while chatting, sleep, wake up have coffee, get out. More convenient then flying if you just want to get from A to B without much fuss while lying down. (I also found the ÖBB couchette do be less comfy, their berths were pretty hard, tho that might change with the new cars they promised)

  • @EpicThe112

    The old route used Dresden Hbf Schöna Bad Schandau Elbtalbahn from Prague. The final section of your sleeper coach using the original pre 2018-2020 termination was Dresden Radebul Ost Großenhein Berliner Bahnhof Elsterwerda Berlin hbf. The trip from Budapest Keleti would have been shorter if the old route was restored to Berlin via Prague Dresden Hbf Elsterwerda from Breclav & Budapest by having CD 380 run Budapest Keleti Dresden Hbf via Prague Breclav then DB BR101/182 Dresden Hbf Berlin via Elsterwerda and Großenhein Berliner Bahnhof. On the German and Austrian Hungarian maps of the route shunting occurs at Breslau Oderberg Lundenburg 130 years ago. At Bohumin the Kilometer Stone actually displays the Distance to Wien Hbf Basically a legacy of the old Austria-Hungary rail network Austrian side. Hungarian Side of Austria Hungary railways Km 0 Budapest Keleti. CD 362 25kv 3kv DC version of DB BR180

However there is a problem with it is that a Budapest Prague passenger must be awake before Prague fall asleep on the train you would end up waking inside Dresden Hbf

    I remember doing the Metropol ride in a seating car in 2015. Back then they used an open Bpmz from MAV with all lights turned on. As a bonus there was passport control at every single border due to the syrian refugee crisis, and at least three fights broke out during that night. Between Breclav and Prague the car was also used by local thugs who were trying to steal from sleeping passengers. I would not call it a pleasant experience...

    What a lot of faffing around. You really didn't take advantage of the sleeping aspect of the trip. You must have been knackered when you arrived at your destination.

    Sadly the Przemyśl group on this one is no more. Polish cars now go only to Wrocław and Bohumin (no sleeper car anymore).

    I have never liked the conditions in the MAV sleeper and couchette cars and the staff are uncooperative and sometimes rude. The beds are small and very stiff, and awkwardly positioned.

    I don't have the same feeling as you do, for me the pillow is really comfy, bedsheet and mattress average. I tried the ÖBB Deluxe suite and I found it almost even (ÖBB is a bit better) The only thing I liked more on ÖBB was the cleanliness of the toilets but it was a solo one so I don't know how their common ones are. As for the staff, I never got bad experience with the MAV ones, but as always it can differ from one trip to another.

    It's still a long way for MAV to catch up with Western European trains in terms of travel quality. I prefer flying from Berlin to Budapest and not to take trains. 13 hours travelling time is a joke.

    I wonder why not all the cars went to Ukraine there? It's strange, because the unfortunate Ukrainian refugees from western Ukraine occupied by orcs were supposed to occupy all the cars.
