Jules uses Elliot to fill the void she's missing from her life since she has a problem with loving herself. As for Elliot, he's just using them to have fun, but there probably is a deeper reason why he stays with them which I hope we find out about his character eventually because no offense, but no sane person would want to be caught in the middle of Rue and Jules' drama.

I believe Jules and Elliot had similar intentions to try and persuade Rue very gently into a threesome. Jules knows Elliot really likes Rue and she knows he will be down to sleep with her as long as he also has Rue. She also wanted to be able to sleep with Elliot without "cheating" in Rue. Not to mention them talking about how uninterested in sex she was, so they both have their intentions with her. Kind of trying to get Rue on board. Didn't work. I think she started to feel uncomfortable by the time she got in the car so her mood got worse.

All I know of Elliot is, he plied rue with drugs all season even though she literally almost died. Admitted he liked her and knew she took those drugs but suggested, basically a threesome after getting alcohol WITH the drugs. He was accessory to Jules cheating on Rue even though Rue is his friend because he legit just wants to sleep with Rue. What point are you trying to make? He has an understanding? She was laughing because rue didn’t like the kiss. Jules was relieved that she wasn’t unattractive to rue, but that rue just didn’t like sex much (as far as she knows), and wanted to spark some kind of sexuality within rue by making her “jealous.” She wasn’t jealous of Elliot. If anything, she was jealous of rue for having elliot’s male gaze all on her without even trying.

The thing that really gets me is that people are hating on Cassie so much while Elliot is doing pretty much the same thing while THEY ARE IN AN ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP yet he doesn't even get a fraction of the hate.

Elliot is manipulating both of them. He knew Jules is still struggling with this horrendous idea of confirming her feminity through the male gaze and he knew Rue was high as a kite and not due to weed but some really dangerous things you shouldn't mix with alcohol; nevertheless, he offered them to go and steal some booze (drinking won't affect him because he chose not to sniff the line Rue had prepared for him). Then, he proceeded to advised Rue not to drink alcohol, to create this image of a "concerned friend" in Jules and even Rue's eyes. Besides, he's deeply aware of the "sex problems" and the communication problems this pair have had from day one. They both talk to Elliot like they aren't able to talk to each other. Don't get me wrong, though. I stopped shipping Rue and Jules after the end of the first season, I'm sure they were a mess way before Elliot was added to the equation, but to deny Elliot's involvement in all this chaos is insane.

The purpose of Elliot's character is supposed to show why Rue and Jules don't work as a couple because they're both able to be honest with him and not each other. Also, Elliot decides to not do drugs as much as he used to and starts being responsible once he starts getting to know Jules if you haven't noticed is a mirror image of Rue's story to represent what Rue can become if she found her happiness. In other words, Elliot is not necessarily there to destroy Rue and Jules, but to show them what they should be.

I think what a lot of people forget is that Jules represents who Rue used to be and wishes to become which is having a hopeful future, but at the end of S1 Rue let's Jules go i.e. letting that part of herself go since the entirety of S1 she was trying to stay sober for the people around her in order to return to the person she was before drugs. Through Jules, she realizes she can't return to that person and why she can't stay clean. This is where Elliot's significance comes in. He symbolizes a new chapter in Rue's life and through Elliot she'll learn to change and grow into a new person, not for the benefit of others, but for herself. As for Jules, this season she represents Rue ready to let go of an old chapter of her life, but embracing a new and brighter future. This is why in this episode we see Rue hallucinating in a church because it's her confessing her sins and cleansing her soul of the guilt and despair she has been feeling her entire life. Her father and Labrinth who are supposed to represent her guardian angel and/or God is them saying "it's okay, we'll love you no matter what and we'll always be there for you. You're not a terrible person. You're just lost and need to find yourself".

I just don't get the appeal of Jules. The show keeps having characters fall in love with her and constantly tell us how amazing she apparently is but she seems ordinary. Not to mention how poorly she treats Rue

Yes! He’s an addict. But he knows how to not take too much so he can still function. BUT he does drugs everyday. He’s the most dangerous type of addict. You think it’s fine but they take hard drugs everyday. But they know how to seem fine. Rue is the extreme type of addict. You see that they are addicted. And Eliot is the type where you can’t tell. And they are still functional. But everyone knows they do drugs all the time and drink. But he knew rue was addicted in a way that would kill her and he was fine with it. That’s what makes him an awful person

I really want his story. When he had that conversation with rue about loss, he never mentions anything about himself. I really want to know his story and why he is, the way he is.

I’m pleasant surprised this scene has so many views because I rewatched it on hbo several times. I love so much about it- how loose Elliot is dancing, the way Jules flips onto the bed, the way Elliot falls back and snuggles into Jules, and when Rue comes back and vibes with the song. Great music, actor chemistry, set dressing, camera movement.

Rue on the other hand wants Jules but also wants to be free to do drugs. The problem is that Jules and Rue have a seriously co-dependent, low key toxic relationship and it doesn’t take much for one, if not both, of them to get insecure and start sabotaging.
