Well, you can't but admire that tribute, respect & admiration for Gough Whitlam by Malcolm Turnbull. A tribute I would say as a Scot who worked & lived in Australia, that only an Australian could give. honest, frank & to the point. Marvellous!

I had never seen this before. Very nice and well spoken words about a man that we will never see the likes of again in Australian politics.

R.I.P. Mr Whitlam. Your contribution to Australian society will be long remembered. Australia's answer to JFK. You had something sadly lacking in modern day politicians, a backbone and a social conscience. You did more for the average Australian in the few years you held office than all of the clowns post war and all of those that followed you. Thank you also Malcolm Turnbull for the kind words.

Malcolm, Gough gave me self respect, you gave me disrespect and continue to do so.

RIP Gough Whitlam, and thankyou for always trying your hardest to break the glass ceiling, so that all Australians had a fairer opportunity, whether black or white, rich or poor. I only wish that there will be a person in the future, who will pick up the huge legacy you have left behind, and build further on it in some positive way! Someone who doesn't let us drag well behind rich countries such as Germany and Sweden with respect to social welfare models!

Gough Whitlam is the first Australian prime minister to die since 1972.....42 years ago! (last one was Gorton).

Very droll, Joe. But if Holt didn't drown on 17 December 1967, there is no evidence that he has died since (although he would be 106 by now!). However we have since 1972 lost Menzies, who died in 1978, and McMahon, who died in 1988. For that matter, Gorton only died 12 years ago in 2002. But if what stegatops1 was trying to say is that Gough is the first Prime Minister to die, out of those who have served in that office in the last 42 years, then that is correct.

Holt "died" in 1967......but i was wrong anyway....3 have apparently died since then....but Gough was the last one to die who has been in office since 1972.....as Daryl pointed out. The other 3 had not been in office for over 42 years. Oddly I didnt hear a big fuss when Gorton died in 2002...I thought I would have remembered that.

I hate you Malcolm Turnbull. I worked for 35 years full time. Gough gave me a real job working for the water board, Shame you can't do something similar. I'm now on a DSP (amputated leg) and you want to tell me I'm a Parasite and deserve the least amount of help. I Listen to you trying to be snidey negative comments about a man you have no hope of ever emulating.

Not that it means much - but Gough was not impressive by sight. Bland, empty, passive and vague looking. Nothing of the Churchill, Kennedy or even Hawke about his appearance.
