Such a good book review! im glad that i found your channel. I just finished the book and my reaction exactly was like yours...I had to remind myself that he's only a character but the way he treated others really bothered me. Expecially the way he reacted Nanon, i felt so sorry for her. And also i was genuinely shocked at that part where his wife died and all he kept thinking about was his heritage. Balzac really explained everything about that society, it was a an excellent novel. Also new sub!!! thank you for your review. :)

Thank-you so much for the kind message! This novel really affected me, there were moments where I had to look away from the page, it was the most loathsome character I have ever encountered. I am very happy you liked the review. I hope I can encourage people to read more, and not be dismissive when books are old, or long, or unpopular. Hopefully you will enjoy some of the other reviews. @@grantlovesbooks Yes exactly!! i study french language and literature and when our teachers said that we had to read this book i was so judgemental. Maybe it was because everyone said literary language of balzac is really hard to understand but i'm now so glad that i read it! i really liked your channel , i hope you reach out more readers like me :)

@@cestgrisha8269 I read it in English, which I am sure is a broad step away from the original French. Aside from very specific vocabulary relating to clothing or currency, I found it quite easy to read. It is a little embarrassing how long l had it on the shelf before getting the courage to read it. Now I'm really looking forward to the next Balzac that is waiting for me. (Black Sheep) Good luck with your studies, it sounds wonderful! In which country are you studying French language and literature? At first I assumed it was France, but then I realized it could be anywhere.

Actually I'm from Turkey, I studied English at high school, but I wanted to learn more about other cultures too, just to improve myself, that's why I study French Lang and lit at university. It's my second year:) I'm looking forward to read another novel from Balzac. I think there is a stereotype on Autors, for example Tolsoy. I also think that I should give them a chance and read it. It's always so hard to start a book that looks so complicated, but when I finish the book, its an another amazing feeling... Good luck with your channel!

The general rule with French is only to pronounce the final consonant of a word if it is followed by an 'e'. ( C,R,F and L are the exceptions and can be remembered as the CaReFuL consonants). Hence Grandet=Granday, Bizet=Bizay etc.

I just read Pere Goriot last week and am about to finish Eugene Grandet soon. It’s interesting the comparison between these two novels with the opposite extremes on money taken by the Fathers.

It was a Very long time ago I read Pere Goriot, but remember how much I enjoyed it. I should really read that one again. This year my plan is to read Black Sheep.
