I would really like to see how you managed that first war against Castile instead of jumping to the end of the war by cut. After easily 20 attempts to defeat Castile according to this guide...my conclusion...it doesn't even begin to work like that. So, about native policies, there is an objectively right option in my opinion, which is trading, but coexistance is better before you finish exploration and expansion for the policy. The reason for this is because repression gives 20 settlers, which is about 1 and 2/3 of a population a month... that's right, less that 2 people a month from that policy. Thing is, it's not even much faster, because you can't get the "natives in X request conversion" or "natives in X adopt Y culture" events with repression. These both give 100 settlers when they trigger and their MTTH is not that long. Add on to this that you have to either station troops in your colonies or wipe out the natives (which is bad, cos native assimilation gives goods produced which is ridiculously powerful when it adds up) and this leads to more money wasted (either on the troops or the loss of profit). Also, it can be a good idea to give "grant new world charters" to your burghers which gives some colonial bonuses if you want to speed things up along with "establish new world missions" to your clergy to get even more native assimilation.

What I like to do as Portugal is vassalising Granada asap (even better if they've been reduced to an OPM like this guide shows since you don't have to cobelligerate them) and giving them Ceuta. Granada has a mission that creates a center of trade in Ceuta, making your trade company even more powerful and giving you an extra edge over Castile and its trade in the earlygame. And if you don't feel like waiting for annexation, you can simply seize Ceuta back immediately afterwards.

Even tried to bait their armies into my mountain fort but they always double their army size mid war and I run out of manpower. I wish the guide showed how he dealt with the Granadan army besieging his provinces and the like. The only way I can end consistently on time is to drag allied Castille in but then they want provinces, meaning I cant demand tons of money to fix debts.

17:17 NO! You should colonise Cape Verde! Arguin is further away, yes, from Portugal. But also from every other province in the game! Colonial distance TO a coastal province is calculated from the sea tile of the province's port. Both Arguin and Cape Verde are connected to the same sea tile, but Cape Verde is considered closer to the sea tile's centre, so it shows it as being closer. However, this goes just the same if you calculate colonial range FROM coastal provinces. Say, you wanted to reach Pernambuco, in Brazil. Your "paths" would be: - Cape Verde->Start Sea Tile->[sea tiles]->End Sea Tile->Pernambuco - Arguin->Start Sea Tile->[sea tiles]->End Sea Tiles->Pernambuco The exact same paths, except in the beginning. And we've already established Arguin is further away from the sea tile than Cape Verde. So yeah, Arguin is further away from the Portuguese mainland than Cape Verde. It is also further away from every single province in the world. To maximise your colonial range, you will want to colonise Cape Verde, NOT Arguin. P.S. Colonising Arguin so Castile doesn't get it isn't a terrible idea, but after Cape Verde!

I am not an EU4 expert but I realized that something was definitely out of the normal. I joined France - England war. I tried your tactic and while I sieged Morocco, England came with 36 ships and 18 soldiers to my land. In addition England, while I sieged and defeated Morocco's soldier Granada went my land and sieged some lands. I can not chase Granada because England soldiers there too. Because all of this, I reached and agreement with Morocco without money. My score just enough to North Morocco lands. At the end of the day, the process took so long that I had to declare bankruptcy like Michael because I am not paying attention to the debt. War exhaust was also at reached 18. Even when this fckng England is my subject, he does not bring soldiers from his own land with ships, but for some reason he wanted to besiege me in the war of France. Well play England, well play...

I believe that the meta of colonizing the furthest provinces around Africa is simply not optimal. Rather than colonizing the furthest african province from your current provinces, you should colonize the province that gets you the closest to the Indian Ocean. For example, while Arguin is farther than Cabo Verde, it might actually be better to colonize the latter to go just one province farther in the next step (the one next to Benin as opposed to the one closer). (Note: I have did no experimenting to see if that is the case). An even more egregious example is colonizing St. Helena instead of Luanda. While that island is further from your current holdings, it also is further from the cape. In other words, you could've possibly colonized Cape itself after Luanda rather than that region's closest province after the island. Not to say that these two examples don't help you with the Americas either (St. Helena might, but Argentina isn't that much in play until Brazil is colonized anyways).

If you form Spain, you usually get all of the Castilian into Spanish missions, which focus on colonization. If instead you want to conquer France and the Mediterranean, especially the Ottomans, switch to Aragonese culture before forming Spain. You'll then get Aragonese missions, instead. If you're quick about conquering the Mediterranean, you can then form Jerusalem by decision, as long as you do it before the age of absolutism, but you can't form Spain and Jerusalem both. Personally, I like the idea of tag switching into Kongo on my way to Aragonese Spain, with a Portuguese start.

Or even better, culture flip to an Italian culture and form Italy instead of Spain, Italy is a much better endgame tag since they get CCR and permaclaims on the whole Mediterranean. Spain is a huge noob trap if you're trying to do a big blobbing run (e.g. a WC) because they get no bonuses towards CCR, admin efficiency or dip annexation (speaking of which, another potential option is to form GB since they get cheaper dip annexations and you can do a dip annex build with that)

You can only do it via a few provinces, such as Bermuda or South Georgia, that are in the New World region, but not actually in a colonial region, so Croatia -> Bermuda -> Then you can form what you want. (If I understand correctly)

I've started using them and I feel like they're situationally better, although the 20% loyalty drain to cancel them and the fact that you either re-enact them every 10 years or you have a dead privilege just giving 10% loyalty at the cost of income until you revoke it is kind of an annoyance over the loans.

For instance if I accidentally attack using conquest instead of reconquest, and I can’t save scum of course because I didn’t notice in time, I just white peace the war instead of just handing occupation to subject to take it that way. Reduced AE, plus, when you hand an occupied province to a subject and take it in the peace deal, it does not take into account your modifiers to war score cost, and maybe even admin efficiency I believe I’m not sure.

@@helzing5114 Okay, I've found a way to get a good enough first war. Don't recruit the five regiments at the start, and build a heavy ship and 4-5 galleys at the start. Put off building the flagship for later. About halfway through 1446 start recruiting a free company, and grab the Expansionist Zealotry clerical privilege. Recruit a general for your free company and check if he has any siege pips. Once you're in position, rush Tangiers with either the 9k force if the general has a siege pip, otherwise use the 15k stack. You might have to fight off one attack, but especially if Tunis isn't allied to Morocco you can catch them in a position where the AI won't risk attacking either of your provinces. You then just let warscore tick for the North Morocco provinces, and just deal with the fact that you'll have to fight for Fez later. Boring but tense, I left the war with more manpower than I started and I was in prime position to bully Tlemcen immediately after.

If you can win the war without fighting their dudes (and they'll run away if you outnumber them severely) then you've got a decent free economy and military boost.
