EU enlargement: What are the limits? • FRANCE 24 English
The war in Ukraine has forced a major rethink of European security, with further enlargement of both NATO and the EU now on the table. Kyiv has asked for a fast-track procedure for EU membership. Moldova and Georgia have also applied. The EU has made it clear that Ukraine belongs to the European family. However, admitting several more nations would be highly challenging. And even before the war, the EU was already negotiating with candidate countries Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey. We discuss how far the EU should grow, and how fast that process should be, with two MEPs.

japan. japan is the limit
the lady is right ...
It definitely needs to happen in a timely manner.
It sounds like that there is resentment from those that took the steps to meet ‘the standard’ earlier to any adaptations in the approach to enlargement. You’ll need some new leaders who can look past this level of myopia and consider what are the real costs of not enlarging promptly to the remainder of the ‘continent’ from political stability and security standpoints. A large single market does not magically fill in all of the cracks (north-south, west-east, large-small, ..) that’s inherently baked into Europe. In the end, the inflexibility will just bring down the whole ship if you fail to account for the pressures that build up from the range of capabilities/needs of the member states (this phased approach to expansion could be generalized more to levels of membership for existing members for instance). EU is not a religion but sometimes sounds like the Medieval Catholic Church.
It's an emotional blackmail. Lets help Ukraine to reform and develop like EU did in past with Central European candidates and still doing with West Balkan states and when or if Ukraine ever reach or is close to reaching the required standard for EU membership then let them and EU decide what kind of relationship is the best for them- who knows what Ukraine or EU will look like 20yrs in future but to allow Ukraine in as it is now or will be in foreseeable future would be slap in face of current candidates and would burden and paralyse EU structures to such extent UK Brexit troubles will look as appealing alternative to many current members.

Counties like Poland and Hungary (and with Turkey for NATO) have shown why its important for the EU to reform first before expanding towards Russia's neighbors. The Veto power is a problem. Because these countries may not fully aligne with EU values.

At the beginning of the EU, it seems the EU is becoming stronger and stronger but as its members grew bigger and bigger, the EU become weaker and weaker due to the fact that all the States don’t have the same economic and politics values. Economically,The West is more developed, theirs countries are prosperous with jobs and a good standard of living with all the commodities whereas the East is pretty much IN so they can get the opportunity to move to the west for jobs opportunities and/or to get the financial support by being a member. Politically, the East is still fresh from the communist mind set from the Soviet Union, so even though on paper they are Democratics sovereignties, they are not fully incorporated to be a real one which we can see that there are tensions between the West and East members. On top of that the EU governance policies are having loopholes to the point they can’t do anything about it if one member rebels. Hungary and Poland are the examples of being the spoils players which don’t mean they are bad, they just use the system in their favor and nothing wrong with it. With the Ukraine/Russia conflict, the EU really needs to find the right ingredients to patch up the wounds else conflict inside will arise. The Uk exited the Eu is very simple: The EU policies don’t fit the UK needs anymore.

Russia attacked ukraine in 2014 because they wanted to join the EU not NATO , and the problem is the EU is going towards political union thats why the british left if it had kept as a free market with free movement it would be more possible to take in more people . you have very big differences on things like immigration. And when I look at europe your helping refugees but not a single european state sent troops to help ukraine , and europe has sent less arms than the USA
In 2012: Is the European Union that we have today not a great achievement and an inspiration for other regions in the world, despite all its flaws? The late Singapore Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew said.: ## No, I do not view the European Union as an inspiration for the world. I view it as an enterprise that was conceived wrongly because it was expanded too fast and it will probably fail. ##
