Awesome review, man! I'm upgrading from the Etymotic HF5 and this review is a huge help for me. Kudos for emphasizing the need to find the correct eartips.

Dead Disney Comply ts100 small is the best tip you can get for er4

I bought two pairs. The er3xr and er2xr. Haven't tried them yet . I'm only worried about the fit lol. I'm hopeful they will fit just fine

I just got to listen to both er3xr and er2se today. So far I like the xr a bit more but the se version is probably better for reference listening for sure. the fit was not as weird as I thought thank God. I have to use the large triple silicone tips. The foam tips were actually brittle feeling and broke while putting them on.

Thanks for your review, watched it and demoed these at a nearby store... and love them! Superbly neutral and I'm luckily one of those that can get a comfortable good seal with the triple flanges. Will be getting them shortly as soon as I can gather up the funds... just wondering, do you use these with your mobile device? I found that I can get good enough volume on these at 80% on my iphone (amp made them better, but I'm not sure how often I'd use these at home), but have a problem where I do have a protective casing on them, thus these fat plugs won't fit... going caseless is not an option for me so I'll either have to find a case that'll fit these or get one of those slim adapters that fits in a case... not sure if the adapter would affect the SQ at all.

EMK19 a physically durable adapter should cause no change in sound quality with the er4s at all. More sensitive balanced armatures might see a slight frequency shift, but not the e4rs at an already high impedance. I don't use any amp unless i'm playing with EQ apps and need a boost to counteract a large preamp cut in the app. But for general use i get plenty of power on pretty much any device unless listening to uber quiet orchestral soundtrack music out and about...

which one would you prefer strictly based on sound quality? Tenores or ER4S

Akaishiro That's a really really tough one actually. ASSUMING you got the perfect fit with the ER4S and KNEW you were achieving their target sound, I'd put the ER4S with red filters just a hair above the tenore in terms of "overall" sound quality. ASSUMING you get a pair of tenores with perfect bass (the bass varies between sets) then I'd say the tenore would have better bass, but is more "dry" sounding and less smooth in the most setrict comparison. MAYBE, a tenore with perfect level of bass would be equal to the ER4S with red filters as the great frequency response might outweigh the micro smoothness of the ER4s. I love the tenore, but if it means anything, I use the ER4S with red filters exclusively as my "main" earphone. It is what I compare every other earphone to. However, when I'm just listening to music I always use a bit of EQ on any earphone I use to improve them, and the ER4S is no different. I hope I'm not trailing off here, but my point is that they are two of the best sounding earphones out there under the right conditions. The problem is that unless you have a few pairs to compare, you won't know if your tenore has too much or too little bass (unless you are very familiar with a neutral level of bass). The ER4S is always verified and tuned by Etymotic to be consistent to a great degree. And your tenore will most likely fail not due to abuse. The ER4S will last a long time if cared for, provides far superior isolation, which would improve the sound quality if you can't listen to your tenores in a very quiet room, and they have a great out of warranty replacement pricing. Yes the tenores are cheaper, but less consistent and less durable. So hopefully that helps in some ways. STRICTLY AUDIO QUALITY: ER4S with red filters.

After a long time of listening and new earphones, I'd say i prefer the er4xr now above the tenore. Just fyi.

I'm looking to buy my first expensive earbuds over $200 and I'm really considering these. I'm no professional but I like listing to all music and I enjoy detailed sound with some bass. Would you recommend these? I also notice that you have a video of the shire se525 how do these compare? Thanks.

these IEMs produce some of the best sound qualities and provide excellent noise isolation. but since it is suppose to produce the most 'accurate' sound. it may sound plain if you personally prefer more base/turble

Try sony ericcon mh1 for better sound performance without any deep insertion

Definitely not better sound performance. MH1 is amazing for the price and one of the most neutral headphones for the price. But er4s is definitely a step above in my opinion. If you want more bass the mh1 is a great alternative though.

@@dentReviews but i do not like this deep insertion, they are usless without deep insertion , mh1 is still better in treble area without any harshness. Better eq and audio source make mh1 most sounding studio reference.
