Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look and installing the Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller on a 2023 Toyota 4Runner. Now this is what the REDARC looks like when it's installed and compared to a lot of your traditional brake controllers that you see mounted up on a dash that you inevitably hit your knees on, the REDARC really does a fantastic job of making it look like an OEM brake controller. As you can see, even with this factory knockout plate the button matches all of the controls here. It's hidden out of the way, but it's still super accessible and equally as usable as any other brake controller. Just like any other brake controller you can pick between two modes. You can have it to where it's user controlled or you can have it proportional to the braking pretty easy.
So right now it's at zero it's not gonna be putting any gain on there but the heavier the trailer, you just go up a little bit and if you need to adjust it while driving it's gonna keep it at that setting. And that is also super easy to get your manual override here by just pushing the button or you can have it proportional so as much as you hit the brakes it's gonna kick on and to swap between the two modes, it's just a double tap. So it's super easy. Now as far as install goes, it's incredibly easy to do and it gives you a really clean package overall once it's done. If you are looking for a brake controller for your 4Runner and you're just shopping around this is the one to go to.
My friend recently just put one on his and I did it in his driveway in about 15 minutes. So it was really cool, he was excited about it and it works fantastic, so definitely a great option. Now this one in particular is for one to two axles. If you need to step up to three axles, which probably isn't something you'd be towing with this there is another option available and that's the Tow-Pro Elite. It installs exactly the same but the main difference is just gonna be the fact that you can have up to three axles.
When picking up your brake controller for your 4Runner you're gonna want to get this adapter harness and this is gonna make it super easy as far as, I mean just really plugging it into the factory tow package. And then this will go into our brake controller so you'll be happy to know there's zero wire splicing, there's zero having to tie into anything electrical. We're really just gonna plug this in, get our ground and then make the rest of our connections. Before you know it you'll have your brake controller installed. Our first step is gonna be locating our factory tow package plug.
So you're gonna check right by where your parking brake is kinda by the footrest and you're gonna see there's a large wire grouping. It kind of looks like a main harness there and there's gonna be a zip tie as well as one wrap of tape that's around this white plug. So if you cut that zip tie and cut that piece of tape just make sure you don't nick any of the wires. You're gonna be able to pull that plug down a little bit easier and give you a little bit more room to work. So now that we have our plug accessible this is just simply going to snap into it so you can make sure that that's plugged in. But we do have this ground wire with a ring terminal and finding a factory ground makes it nice and easy. You don't have to put any self-tapping screws in and I did find a 10 millimeter bolt. You can use a 10 millimeter socket to get it loose and it's kind of right by the parking brake. It bolts into the side, it kind of faces this way. So with a socket and a ratchet you can take that off and that's gonna become a good grounding point for our ground wire. So I'm gonna go ahead, I'll get this plugged in and then kind of show you how it looks. I was able to get this ring terminal mounted up. You're just gonna take a look at where your hood latch release is and just kind of look, it's bolted in. It kind of points to the outside of the vehicle. Again, a 10 millimeter socket's gonna loosen that up. So put the ring terminal on there, tighten it back down. And that's a one step already down. We are gonna be mounting up our brake co

Great video! VERY helpful! I installed this unit into my 2024 4Runner today. The hardest part was putting the wire ties around it to hold it in place because the space is a bit tight. Can’t wait to hook my camper up and see it in action. The etrailer website is a great place to get this and other parts you need. Thank you!

For off-road towing, the Tow Pro Elite is recommend. The Liberty is for on road towing only.

I just finished this exact install. Took me about 30 to 40 minutes. The part that took the longest believe it or not, was securing the actual unit to the metal dash support. Even though you have enough room after pulling the dash piece, its not enough to have both hands in there messing with zip ties. The actual brake controller hook up was a breeze. I wont hook up my trailer for another few weeks, so I hope it works as good as the reviews. Thanks for the tutorial.

Well that's a lot easier than ripping the dash apart and adding mounting points.

Did anyone actually do splicing with factory harness or no?

Are you speaking of the factory harness that's usually found in the glove box? You can absolutely use that. You'll need the universal pigtail, part # RED69FR which will wire to the factory harness you're speaking of. The factory harness wires should have each wire's function labeled on it, the universal pigtail wires have the following function: • Black wire-12V power • Red wire-brake stop lamp signal • Blue wire-brake controller output to trailer • White wire-ground connection www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brake-Controller/Redarc/RED24FR.html

Love the controller. Worst part of the install is getting all of the plastic dash panels off. Install of the actual brake controller is a piece of cake

@etrailer You wouldn't want to use me for advertising purposes. I installed mine on my 2020 4Runner. Installing the controller after I had all the panels off took maybe 30 minutes. But I was in no rush. Taking all the panels off was no picnic. Sometimes those white push pins don't come right out. But, I got it done. I love the fact nothing is visible once installed but the control know. Side note: My brother installed this unit on his 2023 Tacoma. He tows a cargo trailer for work and has commented several times that the controller works great

That's awesome, good job! Most folks don't do installs like this every day, so the fact that you were successful is nothing to sneeze at!
