Ethmoid: parts and landmarks

The ethmoid is a small, unpaired, somewhat cuboidal-shaped bone of the neurocranium. It is positioned in the midline between both orbits and below the anterior cranial fossa.
The ethmoid is exceedingly fragile, light and has a spongy structure. It contains numerous air cells and consists of thin bony plates. Usually, it is hard to find ethmoid as a unit because of its fragile nature.
The ethmoid contributes to the medial wall of the orbit, the superior and lateral aspects of the nasal cavity, the nasal septum, and the floor of the anterior cranial fossa. Therefore, it separates the orbital and nasal cavities, as well as the nasal and cranial cavities.
The ethmoid is composed of the following parts - cribriform plate, perpendicular plate, and paired ethmoidal labyrinths.
