Ethernet for smartphones and tablets

Ғылым және технология

Many people have asked me how to use ethernet instead of WiFi with their tablet or smartphone.
While the idea is simple enough, getting ethernet to actually work with your gizmo can be anything but easy...
Some devices simply won't work with certain USB-Ethernet dongles, and other devices won't work at all with any dongle - period.
So, the short answer is: it's complicated!
You often can find one that works though, so don't lose all hope.
Also, watch the vid to learn some of the other pitfalls of getting ethernet to work with your smartphone or tablet.
What type of USB plug do you need on the dongle for your device? See here:

    Most claim they're pointless, but at work they have great use. I work at McDonalds and we use them on our iPads for our UberEats and Table tracker iPads. Often the WiFi in the restaurant goes down due to congestion or low temperatures in the server room (Northern Canada, -35c regularly here) and the LAN always works no matter what. Without this our UberEats and Table service just wouldn't work 1/2 of the time!

    @@craiga7652 Okay. So you added about 5-10 seconds worth of the 5-10 seconds that the original comment you responded to, took to sum up this ENTIRE video. So you doubled the time, and it still only added up to less than 30 seconds. AS OPPOSED to the 11 minutes extra that the video took. To be clear at 6:24 he is about to show the "THIS GUY" for the fast ethernet adapter, and cuts the video then proceeds to explain some more after repeating the question, ONCE AGAIN, and stating it's complicated. SHORT ANSWER IS.. YES. ALWAYS START WITH THE YES, THEN EXPLAIN THERE ARE CONSIDERATIONS. JEEZ. HOW HARD WAS THAT. lol

    Interesting video, Scottie! As always, I enjoy the videos and keep making them! I hate to ask a question like this but my ISP techs aren’t the greatest at configuring issues and I’ve searched a lot about this issue and can’t find a solution. I turn my devices all off at the end of the night. When my gf gets up in the morning before me, she turns on her phone and it finds the router but doesn’t want to transfer any data, so she has to reset the router and then it works. I wake up an hour or two later and turn on my phone and it done the same thing, but it also makes every device in the house lose connection until we reset. This started happening when our ISP swapped our modem/router. We have a dual band router off their modem/router and the ISP turned off WiFi on their modem/router. It’s not a serious issue but it’s annoying to have to reset the router 2-3 times daily. I don’t know much but I’m thinking this has to do with my dual band router recognizing a new IP after it disconnects for a certain period of time. I hate to blame the isp’s router but it started happening after they put a new one in. We’ve had the same dual band for years so nothing there has changed. If you don’t want to help, I understand. If anyone else wants to chime in, please do! Thanks for the great videos, Scottie! Keep up the great work!

    Just today I received a Tecknet USBC to Ethernet adapter from Amazon for my Samsung Galaxy S5e tablet, plugged it in and it was picked up immediately! It was plug and play, it did come up asking for all sorts of info, like IP address, DNS name etc., but I noticed that the Ethernet icon was showing on the top, tried to go to a website, and voila! I'm so happy because since the last Windows update my HP laptop has stopped working with the Ethernet adapters and I get very poor WiFi signals, which works only occasionally (when the wind is blowing in the right direction, today it's not, so I'm now on my tablet 🙄) TFS 👍❤

    Android sometimes does the same thing... I think what's happening is that some apps on the phone can't "see" the Ethernet as a net connection. So if WiFi is off, they think you're offline (or parts of the software do, anyway). I don't know of any fix for it, unfortunately. Everybody just assumes we all use WiFi, all the time!

    Thank you for the first honest -- and helpful -- video I've seen about the "complications"! Which bears out the many hours so far sshuttling between KZread videos (most very out of date), online articles and forums (informative but contradictory) and Amazon.co.uk listings (necessary but maddening when comments contradict manufacturers' assertions -- if they make them) trying to find out whether my tablet & phone will connect to Ethernet (in principle, yes and yes) and if so, which adapter to get -- which is very much harder to check or decide, especially as I want a powered hub. But at least I'm now reassured that trying to identify something that will work actually IS a headache to find out, and not just due to my ignorance.

    PS For anyone who might be helped by this, my Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 and Galaxy Note 9 should in principle both connect via Ethernet, given the greyed-out "Ethernet" listing in Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Ethernet. And one valuable thing I've learnt from this video is (once having dound a suitable adapter hub) to keep wifi connected before plugging in Ethernet cable, in order then to turn off wifi in Settings... Thanks again

    Can u use a Ethernet adapter without Internet or Wi-Fi?

  • @givethanks6714
    @givethanks67144 жыл бұрын

    If your device do not support USB "on the go/OTG" Ethernet, then you can use USB reverse tethering if you have a computer with Ethernet. Look it up on youtube. It is not as convenient and can't download from Google play, but regular surfing the net is great.

    Just subed to your channel great info.. So on top of ethernet doggie you also have to have a router or modem ??

  • @ScottiesTech

    @ScottiesTech

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yup. You connect the ethernet cable to the dongle and then into whatever kind of "box" you have for your internet. There are usually 4 ethernet ports on the back of the modem/router your ISP gives you - even if you've been using only WiFi.

    Usually not... Although there are some phones where you can do that, but it usually requires an app and/or other shenanigans like developer mode options, rooting, etc.

    Is it possible to reverse? I want to share internet from my mobile to laptop via ethernet. I do have ethernet to usb cable type A which can be connected to laptop USB port.

  • @ScottiesTech

    @ScottiesTech

    That's usually not so easy, and most often requires rooting the phone. The unfortunately simple solution in this case is to use the phone to create a WiFi Hotspot, and then of course you can connect whatever you want to use the phone's internet connection.
