Ethel Merman performed this poignant version of Gordon Jenkins' "This is All I Ask" on a rare 1977 TV appearance.

How beautiful it is to hear Ethel using her lighter voice. Once more, the amazing Merman amazes me with her brilliance.

I love Ethel Merman, her passion and sincerity is so effective on everything she sings and I don't think she ever lost her pipes! Have this one by Nancy Wilson on her last recording and it is beautiful also.

It’s great to hear this remarkable lady do plaintive songs with feeling instead of her usual bounce, which of course I also enjoy. Thanks for sharing this wonderful video. 👌

She sang on gut instinct rather than technique, but Ethel Merman's voice hardly deteriorated over the years. All those performances on Broadway without a microphone and still capable of this towards the end - maybe not the prettiest sound , but a kind of vocal miracle / wonder really.

Oh my God, what is worse, lyrics or Music? Ethel should have listened to her agent and bailed out.

Changing the lyric from "beautiful girls" to "good looking men" in an attempt to make the song gender compliant destroys the ecstatic experience that the song is intended to deliver. They could have asked Ethel to sing, "BEAUTIFUL" men, and the emotion would have been sustained. Men can be beautiful! My Dad was!
