Hayden Anhedönia was raised in a tight-knit Southern Baptist community-her dad was a deacon, and she and her mom sang in the choir-at this point, the 23-year-old’s relationship with religion is complicated. She left the church at 16, a few years after she was first ostracized for being gay, and a few years before she would come out as a transgender woman and start making harrowing music under the name Ethel Cain. She insists that her choice to live in a former place of worship-and to sometimes explore the nightmarish side of Christianity in her work-was made not out of spite but rather in the spirit of reclamation. I came across Ethel Cain earlier this year, and "Crush" is easily one of my favourite songs ever these days. I love the production on the guitar for the chorus, and the spoken "yeah right - he fucking loves me" followed by that shout are such cool touches. You are right on the character aspect - Ethel Cain is a persona. Highly recommend looking her up to read more!

Not only is her music and visuals just stunning....but she's pretty fascinating as a human being. I highly recommend looking up her hour plus interview on the podcast Artist Decoded. I've literally listened to it 5 times since it came out....it's that inspiring and interesting. Hayden has got quite a sharp creative mind...and such a unique vision. Inbred is amazing, but just the beginning. She seems rather keen on going super far with her music/art, but 100% on her own terms and under her creative vision and control. Those are always my favorite artists....the ones who refuse to give up ANY creative control under any circumstance. Hayden is going places....and I'm just super happy to be here for the ride.

Thank you for saying you can’t get over the title track Inbred because that’s what I said to my friend about it. It’s haunting scary and so vulnerable, I wanna know what the story it is about exactly too if anybody knows? It’s so heavy that I love it. Her voice in it summons a huge hole on your heart and makes you feel like you can’t properly breathe.. like, the voice grabs your heart raw and has you fall down on your knees.. omg how does she manage to be so raw

I know this is 2 yrs later so you might know by now but Hayden has said inbred is about Ethel, the character’s, painful childhood events where she leans on her social outcast brother for safety/stability thru it! she wrote it while thinking of moments in her own life where people failed her and/or she didn’t realize how messed up it was until later, and the title ‘inbred’ is a play on how generational trauma is intertwined through the family!!

I’ve been so obsessed with ethel cain this year and I’ve been so into your channel lately and I’ve literally been thinking about mentioning this album and her golden age ep, so it’s literally so exciting to see you react to this album!! another artist I would love to see you get into is beach house (they’re a different, more spacey pop vibe and they’re coming out with a new album soon (with singles out now) and all of their music is so dreamy and beautiful!

To be honest, her darker themes hurt this mama's heart, but her talent is a beauty to behold.
