ETABS Tutorial 5: Creating a Linear Model with the Same Initial Stiffness as the Nonlinear Model?

In this video, you will learn how to create a linear model that has the same initial stiffness as the nonlinear model. This step is important for evaluating the level of nonlinearity in the nonlinear model. By comparing the seismic results from both models, you can the effect of stiffness degradation on the overall response of the structure. This video also includes an example that demonstrates both methods, allowing for a detailed comparison. Lastly, the flexural stiffness of the members is adjusted using the ETABS stiffness modifiers to match that of the nonlinear model.

The response spectrum in ETABS is already defined with a 5% damping ratio for the Bangkok site of Thailand, providing another 5% damping ratio would essentially apply the damping twice, leading to incorrect results. It's important to ensure that the damping ratio is only assigned once to the spectrum to avoid any inaccuracies in the analysis.
