In 1965, my grandfather's marine unit was being sent to fight in Vietnam. They were traveling by plane and over the intercom, the pilot says, "if you look out your right window, you will see the island of Iwo Jima. Let us take a moment of silence and respect the marines who died their." The entire plane was silent for 20 minutes.

Clint Eastwood directed Two Movies about This Battle, the First Movie was through the American Eyes called "Flags Of Our Father's" it's about the Men who Raised The Flag, The second Movie is through the Eyes of the Japanese called "Letters From Iwo Jima" and that movie is mostly in Japanese, both Movies are Very Good, You should check them out

I recall an interview with an Iwo vet who said something like: "Those guys were decorating the island with flags, meanwhile I'm loosing men 300 yards away...they only fought six days, my men kept fighting for another 36." Just sum'n to thinks abouts.

Fun fact: That picture was staged. The original flag was much smaller and was placed by a coast guard member that happened to be there and had a small flag with him. The media didn't like the optics of taking pictures of that so they had a bigger flag and pole to make a more impressive picture to headline the articles they wanted to write.

@@chemislife actually the famous flag raising picture wasn't staged, when Rosenthal was asked he thought he was being asked about a gung ho picture he had taken, his famous picture he didn't even know how it would turn out as he didn't actually look through the lens, amd just kind of clicked the shutter button. Wasn't until he saw the photo much later that he realized the picture he was asked about was that flag raising. It was the second flag as the first had already gotten destroyed in the high winds on top of the Mt. Sorry for the long explanation lol

This wasn't even close to the first contact we had with the Japanese. It was near the end of the war. Okinawa was just after this and that was the last major land battle we had. Most of those Marines knew what the Japanese were all about.

I was looking to see if someone else posted this. I had literally been years at this point. Also, Banzai charges had been forbidden before like on Peleliu a few months before Iwo Jima in the fall of 1944.

But Japanese tactics were completely different on Iwo compared to the other battles fought already. In fact this became the Blueprint for Japanese Defense of Okinawa. No beach defense, lay in tough country inland and bleed them to death. Americans thought they knew Japanese tactics, then this happened. Its also the #1 reason the US dropped the Nukes. If they were going to fight like this on Iwo, what about Japan......

I was looking for this too, I believe guadal canal or those Solomon Islands were first/Philippines , don’t quote me on that though I didn’t ask doctor google yet

My grandfather was part of the only army unit assigned to the pacific as a mountain unit that fought at Iwo jima. He was in the Infantry I medically retired from the army in 2014 from 3rd ID as light infantry myself. My great uncle fought in the korean war and also was infantry. He was one of 3 survivors at the battle of pork chop hill from his entire company. Unfortunately my injury was from a training accident and never got to be as cool as them

We are all blessed from his service. My great uncle missed that battle, but he was in at least a dozen other major battles in Guam and Okinawa. He was in the Marine Artillery Corp.

@@ghostface1621 I believe so. I've looked at his stuff that's left. My mom's first husband...or my mom, stole his stuff from his time in service. He apparently had a japanese officers sword. They sold these things for booze or drugs, I don't know. The thing is my grandfather was very entrepreneurial. He took photos of what was going on and in his footlocker has a ton of old photo cans and black and white photos of the island of Iwo, and he would sell them to the Navy. During the war. And I wanna maybe take it to the infantry museum or something. Maybe they could help me make it into a photo book if the film is salvageable

Remember that this was a volcanic Island. The black sand was hot and the whole island stank of sulfur. Just a background detail that added misery to everyone's existence on the island.

My Great grandfather was a marine wounded on Iwo Jima and was the only person from his basic training that made it through the war. He hated it and said the Japanese would fight until the last man and didn't give up.

My father was on one of the islands with a landing strip, three uncles were marines fighting for the islands. In a terrible war, men's lives were changed forever.

You are an absolute legend, you’re so friendly and polite and these videos are just fun to watch. Keep on it at your own pace and be safe and I hope life isn’t too rough and if it does become rough don’t let it put you down.

Those two bombs saved an estimated 1 million US lives and probably more Japanese as they did tend to fight to the very last bullet or soldier.

Really cool to see Artur do a video on Iwo Jima. I've been fascinated by this battle since I took a tour of the Marine Corps Museum when I was in the second grade, and our tour was led by a man who had served there.

You need to watch letters from Iwo Jima,its a movie that takes place on the battle of Iwo Jima from the Japanese perspective,it tells the events based on what some of the soldiers letters revealed that were found dug under the sand in a cave I believe

I had a teacher in the elementary school that was wounded in the battle of Iwo Jima. He would tell us stories about the battle and explain that he can never forget the smell of the dead and burned up bodies. He most likely passed on now. I wish I could’ve told him Thank You. Those men really stepped up to the plate and sacrifice at such a young age. We are all grateful for our men and women who serve in the military. 🇺🇸

Having spent time in Japan, the question arises about the nuclear bombs. Their reply is yes, they would've fought to the death and all of their beautiful temples and culture would have been destroyed. So. They admitted to me at least, that it was probably the only thing that would have made them stop.

Iwo Jima would never have been taken, had it not been for the Code Talkers.. you really should react to a video about them.

There is a fantastic Television show (multiple episodes) called 'The Pacific'. I think it was an HBO (a major player in American TV, subscription service) series. They did another called Band of Brothers about the European side of the war. I really enjoyed both series and later read the book for the Band of Brothers serious written by Stephen E. Ambrose. Forgive me if these are things you know.

As of a few weeks ago, the last living Medal of Honor recipient from World War 2 is Hershel "Woody" Williams. He was a Flame Thrower operator on Iwo Jima. When asked, he says that he does not remember much of the day for which he received the MOH.

My granddad was at Iwo Jima. He watched the soldiers raise the flag. He said he would've been one of those soldiers but he was in the infirmary because he was shot in the shoulder. I was young when he was alive so listening to his war stories was just the worst ever. :( Now, what I wouldn't give to listen to every single one of them.

As terrible as they are, nuclear weapons have actually saved far more lives than they have taken, in both actual use at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and just by the fear of their usage to keep the US and Russians from going to war with each other.

At best, the pre-landing bombardment created shell craters that offered just the tiniest amount of cover

My Dad was born in 1921! He fought in Europe during WW2. He then was sent back to the U.S.and given 30 days leave and then to continue to the Pacific as part of the invasion force of Japan. He said you can't believe how relieved he was when Japan surrendered. The U.S. military plans, so much so they made Purple Hearts to use for the invasion force. They are just now starting to run out!

The movie is Hacksaw Ridge. I put it right up there with Saving Private Ryan. Plus its a true story, and from what Ive read they actually had to tone down some of the scenes to make them more believable. For example, A Japanese sniper said he had Desmond Doss on his sites twice and his rifle jammed both times.

To me though, that's way more believable than everyone's guns functioning perfectly all the time in spite of the rain/guts/mud/dust/explosions/getting thrown/being landed on/shrapnel.

some of the ships made near the end of WWII Us ships had on deck cannons that were firing 12 inch (300mm) shells out of 12 cannons (I may be wrong on cannon count, but I know the calibre is correct) and 8 inch (200mm) shells out of 8 in hull cannons (again calibre is correct, cannon count probably isnt). thats A LOT of firepower!

My grandfather was a Marine Raider (Carlson’s Raiders) and later inter-grated into the 5th Marine Division, 27th Marine Regiment. Was there during the Long Patrol at Guadalcanal, at Bougainville (Piva Trial) then later saw his friend killed and was wounded Iwo Jima. Each time I read about Iwo Jima it really gets to me.

My dad served in the US Army Air Force during WWII and the USAF during Korea. His father was a doughboy who was severely wounded in the Argonne Forest in WWI. For me those early-mid 20th century wars are a lot closer as I heard so much about them when I was growing up.

We never invaded Japan. It wasn't an "insane idea" as you state. We heavily considered it and calculated the losses and cost for BOTH sides, including civilians. That's when we made the decision to drop the two NUKES. If they worked, it would end the war on the spot. So here we are, sitting back and not factoring in the technical differences that 50+ years can make. One needs to look through the lens of time when making such assumptions. Much less not considering the manufacturing base having not been bombed into oblivion like the rest of the world had been.

My grandfather was a Forward Observor for artillery in the Pacific theater. I wish I knew more about where he was and what he did. He never spoke about the war. The FOs were up front with the troops, calling in artillery strikes.

You may be interested in the Battle of Ortona..It was a brutal fight for the port town of Ortona and it's often referred to as the 'Italian Stalingrad'

American hero and medal of honor recipient John Basilone died fighting on the beaches of Iwo Jima. He didn't have to go there but he decided to join his Brothers when they shipped out

That's why we are allies with Japan now. We fought them and they fought extremely hard. We show respect to an honorable and brave enemy and I, as an American salute the brave men on both sides who fought.

This is actually towards the end of the war, not the beginning

My uncle was in the SeaBees (naval Construction Battalion) in WWII. He didn't talk about it much--mostly humorous things that happened. But he once told me (I was young but knew I shouldn't ask for more than he volunteered) about the first landing he made when they were caught in a crossfire-- 200 of the men in his battalion (that would be 550 at full strength) got across the beach. The battalion that landed next to them had similar casualties. Having gained some shelter under the embankment and trees at the landward side of the beach, they regrouped and took out the pillboxes commanding the beach. I finally figured out that it had to be Iwo Jima. Many people are surprised that the naval bombardment did not disable more of the defenses; but naval guns are designed to sink ships. Islands don't sink, and the defenders had a long time to prepare. The most damnable thing about the battle is that by then the US didn't need the island--they could have just bypassed it and let the defenders starve, like at Truk and Rabaul. I read that only three US bombers made emergency landings after the island was captured.

This wasn't the first time japanese and american soldiers met face to face, but it was the first time they did it on japanese soil. Add Kuribayashi, and the result was a pretty brutal fight

This battle was actually one of the last Major landings of the Pacific theater, Okinawa was the last one after Iwo Jima.

the size of the vessel is an important factor in providing a stable platform for the guns and there have been vessels in history that were "overgunned", however that was a thing of the past by the time the second world war broke out. how big a ship needed to be in order to mount guns of a certain size was pretty well understood by that point.

My father fought on Iwo Jima. At first he was a runner, delivering messages between front lines and the command in the rear. Not many of them survived. Then he told me he was a decoy. He would stand up and shoot at the Japanese fortifications and when they aimed their machine guns at him, the flame throwers would shoot from the other side and take out the machine guns.

First contact on a American offensive for a land battle was Guadalcanal, we had invaded and fought them on many islands before iwo jima. But we fought them in a defensive battle in the Philippines while pearl harbor was going on

You were right about the statement regarding the US not wanting to invade the main island. They predicted it would cause millions of deaths on both sides, including a lot of civilians. War plans existed to make it happen in cooperation with Russia and even the UK. The nuclear option was seen as the "lesser of two evils", in hopes of shocking the japanese into surrender. And thankfully, it worked. With the encroaching pressure of the Russians invading from the north, and the two nuclear bombs dropped on them, they realized the war was lost, and surrendered. Battleships did not move due to firing, what is seen in the picture is just the water distortion from firing, think the dust that comes up when firing prone in dirt, same idea. The Battleship New Jersey has a KZread channel that goes through all the little details you could want answered about battleships and myths regarding them.

I always find it interesting when we in the west talk about the Japanese being "Brainwashed". We have honored the memory of the Spartans for over 2000 years. A people who adhered to a code of "Victory or Death" in Battle. When England faced a Nazi invasion Winston Churchill spoke of fighting until the end - "We will never surrender". Japan as a nation was preparing to do exactly that. Having Uncles who fought the Japanese, and having stood an several of the small islands that the Japanese died by the thousands to defend - even knowing that they could not win. It gives me pause. Remember, until 1945, the Japanese had never lost a war in over 1000 years.

My Great Grandfather was part of a Navy Engineer unit that fought at Iwo Jima, as well as many other Islands in the Pacific. His main job was to set up static communication lines (basically military phone lines) between combat outposts. At 32 years old, he was pretty old for his unit. He didn't ever talk about his personal experience the war until he was dying from lung cancer back in 2007. What haunted him the most about the war, even more than the combat, was recovering the bodies. Some of them friends, some of them enemy. Others were civilians who often killed their own children and committed suicide as the Japanese soldiers would lie and say that the Americans were going to torture them to death for fun. It was a psychological tactic used by the Japanese intended to indirectly reduce the moral of the Allies. An old sailor, who served on a destroyer in the Korean War told me that the guns on the battleships would have to fire in volleys one after the other, not because they would rock the ship too hard, but because if one turret fired all of it's guns at once, the entire structure ran the risk of ripping itself off the deck. Each gun was firing a shell that weighed more than a ton, about 2,700 lb.

On Iwo and other islands the "other means" consisted of flamethrowers ,grenades ,TNT ,and bazookas. The trouble with using holes and caves and tunnels: No one has to "come in" to get you. Just shut the openings...and wait.

naval bombardment was not necessarily to kill, they knew that fortifications where built to defend for naval bombardment. it was to keep the men from sleeping, 10 days without sleep combined with shell shock, not a very effective soldier

There were two relatively recent movies about Iwo Jima- Both directed by Clint Eastwood, and both released in the same year (2006). Flags Of Our Fathers tells the story of the men who planted the flag on Mt. Suribachi, and Letters From Iwo Jima tells the story of the battle from the Japanese perspective. While firing a full broadside will cause a 35,000+ ton battleship to rock, I don't think there has been a case of a battleship actually capsizing from firing it's main guns (World War II era battleships were designed not to do that, although there are a few examples of early dreadnaught era battleships [i.e. HMS Agincourt] which were sufficiently poorly designed that the structure couldn't handle the shock of firing repeated full broadsides)
