🌟Estill Voice vs CVT Complete Vocal Technique Masterclass

Estill Masterclass: EVT Estill Voice vs CVT Complete Vocal Technique (AKA CVI) - Charlotte Xerri, Jackie Hole Level 1 & 2 Estill Course, London
See how CVI and CVT / EVT techniques work so well together in this masterclass
for more information contact www.completevocaltechnique.co.uk
I decided to sing and am telling you from Dreamgirls - Oh what fun we had - I picked the biggest / hardest song I could so that it would make me use waaaaaaaaaaaay too much effort Super interesting to have a different take from my CVT technique - I had said earlier that I twang a lot due to practicing effects and being in a rock band and sometimes am not as free as I would like to be as I can also sing with too much 'pressure' - you'll see if you watch the video :-)
*disclaimer - when Charlotte says CVT default - she means MY personal CVT default as I sing with a lot of twang and high larynx to do effects etc - a conversation we had prior to the session
We met in the summer and had such fun that I went on the Estill 1 & Day course

Thank you so much for your comments - As a singing teacher I thought I would put myself out there so that students can see we make mistakes too and we also need to keep on top of learning new things!

My CVT teacher actually used the same techniques as the other Estill teacher, overdrive also uses the more shouty "hey, you over there" sound. I feel like the singer's bright twangy sound was a personal choice more than actually a mistake in technique

I agree! We do tend to sub-consciously imitate the original singer. Jennifer Holliday is big loud and American naturally nasally twangy vocalist. If we learnt this song directly from the sheet without ever hearing the original the outcome would be different.

Isn't Jackie a CVT teacher? All of this could have been a 15 seconds video if the other teacher had asked her to sing in Overdrive instead of Edge. I mean that's, basically the difference between the 2 versions of her cover, 1st one she is modifying the vowels towards the Edge mode and the second one stays more in the "OH" "EH" overdrive vowels, which still require TWANG, but less than Edge and a more neutral/neutral high, instead of a Very high larynx. Both CVT and Estill are good techniques, but CVT is way easier to communicate. Edit: It really depends on the students and teachers. It's not true that CVT is easier to communicate than EVT

Wow! Respect to you Jackie for putting this video here! You have a beautiful voice! I so much recognize these problems in my own baritone voice. High Larynx and probably collapsing the pharyngeal walls a bit. The problems start as I want to thin off the chest and move into what I would call a mix with chest colour(E4-C5), problems increasing the higher I go. I wonder if that collapsing, or at least partial collapsing of the wall is the reason for me experiencing vocal fatigue when done often and extensively, prohibiting the vocal chords to vibrate as freely as they should? Or is it more related to the high larynx position? The problems do not arise if I produce the same sound in more of a head voice coloured mix, given the volume is pretty much the same. Take care! / swedish bloke living in Berlin

High larynx by itself is not giving you trouble. High larynx with uncontrolled constriction is. I would suggest very high larynx on clicking/staccato AE sounds in what I call the "swallsetto". This is "falsetto" in CVT, but used to be called "flageolet" (ae as in cat with North American accent). Do this a little each day, but don't push the volume. It has to be quiet. This will stop your yelling and choking tendencies and give you power where you need it- in the twanging muscles!

@@into.the.wood.chipper. This is actually great advice. If you are a beginner reading the comments , do pay attention and apply this. This actually helped me (22 Male) overcome a wall or block I had (Bb4) and I was able to apply twang in Edge mode up to E5, but it took me several weeks to be able to sing this high without losing the feeling of chest voice. This is the way.

She was more confident and was sure of her muscle memory, after you get advices and corrections you're not always putting attention to the interpretation as much as the way your body feels with what you're doing. So that's why the first had more feeling but the ones after that were better in other aspects that will uo her performance when she acquires the muscle memory of the new sound.

I prefer the sound of the teacher. Her sound is more open and clear and forward when they are both doing the same thing. The "student" sounds more down in the throat and she's curbing/keeping part of the sound in. You can hear some sort of restraint.

Curious why the coach didn’t instruct the singer to simply create a more pure [a] sound on the word I’m and a more pure [ɛ] sound for the word best. More open throat vowels. Incredible singing nonetheless.

Great Question Varun! It depends what you mean by 'best' - all techniques and methods have tools, some the same, some unique to that technique so it really depends what you want to achieve - I find a multi method approach helps you to find out what works for you specifically and in which genre you want to sing - which is why I have made sure I am aware of all techniques and tools available to the singer. I like parts of both CVT and EVT CVT is the only technique that actively teaches vocal effects for example, but EVT has a waveform tool that shows you what you are doing - both really useful and unique to each technique - does this answer your question? If you can tell me a little more about yourself I can perhaps help guide you to a technique that would suit you best?

What a waste of time. I'm so tired of vocal coaches using gimmicks and telling singers to shout like their in church, or stick out their tongue, cackle like a witch, etc. Then they stand back at the end and say, "Doesn't that sound better?" She gave no practical examples of how to achieve a better sound and didn't even SING one phrase of the song. For the first half of instruction the teacher encouraged her to use less twang because it was making her larynx raise, and then when the singer was demonstrating a chesty, dull sound, made her take her Aa vowel back toward a twang resonance. The teacher asks the singer implement too many gimmicks and then the singer ends up trying to keep up with the demands erratic instructions. She sounds the same from the start to the end, which is very good, I must say. She has a great foundation. I just hope you didn't pay for the instruction...
