Nightmare of a ship to sail and work on! Built in 1970 and scrapped in 1983. Always troublesome and Esso happy to get rid of it, along with Esso Northumbria!

My Father had a photograph of the Northumbria & another supertanker under the desk glass in his office on the Oriental Ambassador.- a large container vessel off which he was Captain. In earlier years, he had been a tanker Master & would have been qualified to Master one of these behemoths. At neatly 40,000 tons, the Ambassador was large enough.when I was in my teens he was Captain of a rather ageing tanker called The Hamilton Sleigh - which was a )!three island ‘ design, still having accommodation amidships.

My Grandpa was a 2nd engineer and went on sea trails with her to Lisbon
