Essentials In my Gym Bag for BJJ Competitions (Food, Gear, Etc)

Спорт

What do I put in my gym bag for BJJ tournaments? I get this question pretty often.
But recently, there was a fun story from the IBJJF No Gi Pans which made me consider actually doing the video.
I was sitting in on the 1st day watching matches and a brown belt from Marcelo Garcia's gym and I were talking. One of his teammates didn't have the proper clothing to compete.
Jirel took out a spare set of shorts he had and handed them off to him. Then jokingly looked at me and said I should make a video on what to bring for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournaments.
While it was a joke, I think it was a great idea.
I know that many times there are so many questions for new competitors. So if I can share a few tips, why not.
In this video I share the stuff I bring with me to Brazilian Jiujitsu tournaments.
I include the gear I bring.
The food and supplements I bring or use.
And I also include the type of tools I use to warm up with prior to the match.
If you've got a BJJ competition or match coming up. Then I hope this video proves useful to you and gives you some ideas on the types of things you should bring with you for tournaments.
Thanks for watching and I hope the video was helpful.

    When I was in wrestling for warm ups I would do a bit of general calisthenics(squats, push ups, jumping jacks, etc) find a partner or coach and do about 1min of pumble drills,about 1min of hand fighting, and maybe 1min of a stance drill to get loose.. but I was 17.. 26 year old me needs about a month to recover from standing up to go to the bathroom.

    On the subject of food, I typically always have a bag with pitted dates, prunes, dried apricots, dried pineapple, raw unsalted almonds, raw unsalted walnuts. This I'll eat during training in a break if I need a boost. An hour or so beforehand I normally have a protein shake with whey blended with lactose free whole milk in a shaker that gives me about 75-100 grams of protein and 30-40 grams of fat energy. I use electrolyte tablets or powder in my water for hydration. That's what I'll do if I'm just training. If I was going to an event to compete I'd probably also bring some fresh fruit like oranges or fresh pineapple for quick sugar with hydration and bananas are good too. If I pack food (a meal) a typical meal I might pack might be something like rotisserie chicken shredded over yellow rice with grilled onions and some roasted salsa verde, raw broccoli, carrots and some hummus.

    How do you time your warmup? What about having room for warmups? Sometimes the space is all taken or not much provided, guess the bands help with this? I usually have some problems with the timing of my warmup because the tournament is off schedule or the schedule is explicitly vague, or brackets that are hours apart. How do you manage the balance of warming up initially, staying warm and not just draining yourself (ending up tired and hungry with not but your grit to rely, which admittedly sometimes works).

    Hey mate, obviously I´m not Chewie, but I am pretty sure he has a couple of videos about that exact topic on his channel. Also check out the videos of Chad the Beast Hardy, who is a black belt under Chewie. Chad also happens to be a pretty tall and lanky dude himself, so his game could be perfectly suited to you. Some of his videos definitely helped ME a lot too, as I am a lanky grappler aswell and learned to embrace my physique to easily hang with a lot stronger guys in my gym reliably. Bonus tip: check out Jeremiah Vance´s "flytrap submission" from bottom side mount. Nasty stuff, you can really surprise a lot of people with it. Requires some flexibility, but it really favors long legs! Once people catch on to it, they will often back out of side mount if they recognize the setup though (which i like to use in order to regain my guard). Hope this long post of mine helps you! Take care and keep rolling!

  • @shawn576

    The salt thing is a hard one to grasp because it can seem counterintuitive. Water is held in your body using osmosis. If you have a lot of salt, it means you can hold a lot of water. If you lack salt, it means you can't hold water. Your body wants to hold water, but it physically can't do this unless it has salt. People who are severely dehydrated (ie drunk people) will crave salt and water. People who have plenty of salt will crave water. One food thing that really changed my life about 6 years ago was when I started exclusively drinking protein shakes for lunch. All of those weird things that people think are normal such as getting hungry every couple hours or getting angry before lunch or getting tired by the end of the day were caused by me eating too much sugar/carbs. If you find that your mood, energy, or motivation wildly fluctuate throughout the day, this is definitely something to keep in mind. Are you a ninja in hour 1 of BJJ but a beached whale in hour 4? It might be your blood sugar.

    Salt AND potassium broseph. It'll keep you hydrated, and the potassium may help you from getting cramps and all that. You need those electrolytes (salt and potassium) when you're drinking a shit load of water. When I was motorcycle racing, all the tracks in the desert would have potassium tablets along with sodium.

  • @CoDGameplayz
    @CoDGameplayz5 жыл бұрын

    Water follows sodium (salt) in the body. Without enough salt, your body can’t evenly hydrate your body in a sense. Nowadays most food is loaded with sodium so it’s not an issue, but if you eat clean i would imagine it’s definitely possible to be deficient, therefore messing up your hydration

I am short and overweight (5 feet tall 220lb) and if I’m reading the size chart correctly the ladies gear will not fit on most websites. I’m currently getting personal training sessions at a gym near by and getting a better handle on my nutrition. So far I’ve lost 20lbs. Should I lose more weight before taking my first class due to possibly having issues with gear? I don’t wanna show off the goods on accident.

    I've got problem. After bjj training my throat hurts specifically during swallowing. It lasts few days. Like I've got really bad cold. It happens when I'm choked by triangle, guillotine, RNC or whatever choke. Is it common? Is there way to deal with that? Is it dangerous? Or just try to live with that and it will disappear? It's really hard to eat and drink with that

    It happens to me when we practice what we call at my gym the "LAPD chokes" where the forearm is pressing on the windpipe or the front of the throat as opposed to the sides of the neck. I just learned to tap sooner in that case.

    re: salt. If you're an older bloke like chewy who is probably looking after himself and eating whole, fresh fruit veg and meat, definitely go ahead and salt your foods. But if you are eating stuff out of packages (college student, shift worker) 99.5% of you wont need to salt your food as salt is thrown in everything.

    if you are eating a lot of processed foods salting your food only counts for about 5% of your daily salt intake, so its negligible... better advice is salt your food and stop eating processed foods as best you can.

  • @slumpig360

    @slumpig360

    @Roger_roger..? Thank you for your reply. You have confidently stated a '5%' figure. That seems arbitrary, and in and of itself does not actually mean anything, so defining that as negligible does not really make sense. How would you know how much sodium anyone person consumes from the packaged foods they eat, and how would you know how much salt that person would add to their foods. Yes, it could be small, or it could be a large quantity. It is all relative, but always negligible? I think not. Even better advice would be to read the nutrition labels on all foods one consumes, and only then deciding if salting your food is necessary or not. This as opposed to recommending salting all consumed food and reducing packaged foods "as best you can". Who is to say how much any one person is capable of eliminating processed foods from their typical diet. Irregardless, I think my original comment still stands. If you are esting processed foods, you probably do not need to salt your food. I still stand by that advice and believe it stands well alone.

    Chewjitsu I sent it via email but here it is again in case you didn’t see it Hey chewy I just wanna hear your take on what happened to me last night writting this down Now because I decided to sleep on it see what I thought. So I’m a white belt with 3 stripes been training for more than a year and a half and I tap a few blue belts frequently and I was training yesterday in No Gi it came time for sparring and for the second round I decided to roll with this purple belt lady who always whoops my ass and when rolling we end up in a very wierd position don’t even know how to describe it but the jist is she trying to kneebar me but I’m on that knee so she can’t and I see her neck exposed and I think huh I wonder if this’ll work so I did a no Gi variation of the Baseball Bat choke didn’t think it would work though she’d get out of it but no she taps and at first im really confused wondering if it’s legit and she said ya it’s legit but was a neck crank but whatever I’d say it was pure luck if I’m being honest But here’s the thing whenever I tap a blue belt I’m pretty happy and proud myself but when I tapped her I didn’t really feel satisfied i don’t know if it’s because it was just luck or if it was because it was a neck crank Idk what’s your take on it And surprise surprise no one saw me do it so I don’t want to go bringing it up in the gym cuz I don’t want to be THAT GUY Thanks chewy Regards
