Well done video. tandem canoeing requires that both paddlers know the strokes and also communicate as one during the maneuver. for me and my wife that is the hardest part.

It's really how each person in the boat perceives the move. We teach a course that looks at honing down communication in a tandem to ensure everything goes as planned. Eventually, nothing is said during paddling!

The bow is the motor! Power and fine tuning manoeuvres is the bow role, stern roles are turn initiations and adding to the power.

Im sure the narrarator meant to say during the description of the draw and pry strokes that the intention is to pull or push the boat towards the paddle...since pushing water away doesnt make the boat turn. Other wise great video and nice paddling!!

Hi John! Very true, but we've also found that it depends on the student. Some grasp the concept of pulling the boat towards the paddle, and others only seem to grasp the pulling or pushing the blade. The intent is success for the paddler and a faster grasp of the motion of the paddle. Thanks for bringing it up!

Sure. My professor who I helped TA for described it to me as not thinking you are in water, but on mud....since you cant pull mud...but you can pull yourself along the surface of mud.

great video: is there a "Next Step" video to learn the actual white water paddling (not the lake paddling shown for the strokes)? I hope you have one to bridge those gaps. thank you

Hi! Thanks for the feedback! We always teach the paddle strokes on flat water first and then move to current. What specifically are you looking for as far as "actual whitewater paddling"? River running techniques? Choosing a line?

We had a great time shooting those intro runs. Our most recent video "Eddy Turns Using Arcs" will help explain the strategy used on the Ottawa River at 0:23. A soon to be released video "Eddy Turns Using Troughs" April 2019 will complement Arcs by harnessing the power of waves to help any eddy exit.
